Worth Watching:

Evil (10/9c, CBS): The night's most intriguing drama shifts gears from quasi-horror to religious debate when a 17-year-old athlete suddenly revives after being declared dead for nearly three hours. Is it a miracle — and for skeptical Kristen (Katja Herbers), what would that even mean?‑or merely malpractice? And what do those apparent angel wings on the ER video signify? Beyond the investigation, Kristen and priest-in-training partner David (Mike Colter) each grapple with personal demons: hers involves another disturbing visit from "night terror" ghoul George (Marti Matulis), while David's visions have a more familiar but equally troubling source. And their nemesis, Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson), has found a new way to mock and torment them, when he assumes Kristen's former position as a forensic psychologist.

Fall TV Ratings: Which New Shows Are Enjoying the Beefiest DVR Gains?

"Among percentage gainers — where dramas that close out a night tend to rate highest, because sleep is awesome — Stumptown‘s series premiere fully doubled its rating, from a 0.7 to a 1.4. CBS’ Evil followed, growing 83 percent to a 1.1, while ABC’s Emergence was a distant third, rising 63 percent to a 1.3."

"In actual gains, Stumptown led the pack with an increase of 0.7 ratings points. Evil, Emergence and Prodigal Son each grew by 0.5, while the rest of the freshman class added 0.4 or less."

"Now, for those who like to look at total audience, Stumptown and Emergence enjoyed the largest percent gains in total viewers (77 percent), followed by Evil (58 percent) and Prodigal Son (54 percent). On the low end of that spectrum, Bob Hearts Abishola only grew its audience by 19 percent, while Bless the Harts mustered a mere 13 percent uptick."

"In Live+3, Carol’s Second Act was the most watched freshman debut with a total audience of nearly 8 million, followed closely by Stumptown (7.9 mil), All Rise (7.7 mil), The Unicorn (7.7 mil), Evil (7.2 mil) and Emergence (7.1 mil). At the very bottom of that pack were Sunnyside (2.55 mil) and Bless the Harts (2.1 mil)."

Worth Watching:

Evil (10/9c, CBS): You can learn a lot about different forms of possession from this provocative paranormal procedural, which assigns Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter) and Ben (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate a case of "everyday evil" — with a lower-case "e" — involving the antics of a belligerent Broadway producer (the great character actor John Glover). When it's discovered he's actually been "sweating blood" during his latest rants, they debate whether this could be an example of diabolical obsession. Or is someone gaslighting this boorish brute? Kristen has another antagonist to deal with: malevolent Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson), who's setting out to undo all of her good work in the courtroom, and it's up to her to discredit the fiend — who's also somehow found his taunting way inside David's tormented mind.

Fast Overnights:

"Evil took its first dip in the demo this Thursday, scoring a 0.5 rating to go with its 3.7 million total viewers."

Though given how well we know the show is doing once DVR ratings are added in, this dip may not mean much, especially opposite football. Only time will tell...
