There's a lot of drinking going on...
« on: December 08, 2005, 02:23:57 PM »
Curious, do any of you think that all of the liquor consumed on the set was real?

Some of it looks like it could be apple juice, but hey... they smoked real cigaretts...

In every episode it seems like someone is always taking a nip here, a nip there... Sherry, Brandy, Whiskey...  And poor Sam Evans, he just needs a straw... :-)

I have wondered if it was real or not. You wouldn't think that it would be when they have to keep there mind focused on there lines. Just last night I was watching an episode of DS when Vicki returned form 1795 and had bought the painting of Angelique and Elizabeth just as soon as she walked in the door she asked Barnabas to pour her a sherry and anything he would like. LOL. But it is all fun.

There was no way it was real, they'd get drunk, LOL!  Especially Louis Edmonds and David Ford!   [santa_grin]

Remembering a day's worth of "lines" is hard enough without trying to do it in an alcohol fog....  [8285]

Another thought, AFTER taping/read-through for the next day was done, they'd head OUT to drink, usually at the Brittany which, according to Johnny Karlen, was down the block from the studio.  I think it was Nancy Barret who said they had a "test" to see if they were drunk, that test was they had to say "Lela Swift Schwartz" 3 times fast, and if they could do it w/out stuttering, they ordered another round, LOL!   [tongue5]

Yeah, I never thought of Iced Tea.  Thanks Connie - that does make sense.

Also, I was watching a 1970 PT scene last night where Cyrus drinks some yucky thick purple stuff... any ideas what
THAT could have been?  Maybe whipped liquid jello?  Anyone remember that scene?  It wasn't the first serum he made, it was after Mr. Gladdstone tweeked the ingredients Cyrus remixed the serum and it was much thicker looking...

It was probably some Kool Aid concoction.  If I recall from watching eps at past Festivals, complete w/commercials, I think Kool Aid was a sponsor.  DC probably worked some deal where they got free Kool Aid, LOL!  ;)

Sheesh, I think David Ford, Louis Edmonds and David Selby would be out for the count in no time.
Although, I have sometimes wondered if Mitch Ryan was drinking the real thing in his scenes.

LOL PD!  He probably was!  He was fired for drinking.  Only actor on DS to be "fired" actually.   [santa_cool]

someone here said something recently about sam evans getting sober at some point.
now i remember that during his final days on the show after that nasty bit of business with cassandra his drinking was not a factor but was there ever a point when it was stated decisively that sam was actually "sober"?

my absolute favorite d.s. drunk was carolyn when she was dating buzz during her "rebel without a clue" storyline.she was the absolute stupidest ever!

This thread got me thinking:  they really *do* consume some alcoholic beverage on just about every episode!  I've just watched an early 1969 episode when Julia gets locked in the records room at Collinwood; of course, as soon as Barnabas comes to her rescue, she simply *must* have a glass of brandy.

You have to remember that this was back in the days when it was still considered unacceptable for people to point out to out-of-control-drinkers that they had a problem.

back then they used to consider alcohol to be medicinal in certain situations.on the show whenever someone faints or goes into some sort of shock the first thing offered is a glass of brandy.

the do do alot of drinking on the show.even the very non-alcoholic characters think nothing of brandy in the afternoon.but back then drinking didn't have the same social stigma that it does today.remember martinis at lunch?today anyone drinking at lunch would be widely considered to have a serious problem with alcohol.

i seem to recall one episode where the sheriff comes to the old house to question barnabas about something and barnabas being the gentleman that he is offers the sheriff some sherry.can you imagine offering the police alcohol if they came to question you today?
