Who was on DS more; John Karlen, or Lara Parker?

According to the DS Almanac(s) the answer would be:

John Karlen 180 eps
Lara Parker 269 eps

Even though Karlen came on the show earlier, he was absent for longer periods of time.

At the only DS fest I attended, during a question-and-answer session with cast members, John explained that unlike other performers he never had a contract with DCP or ABC.  He came and left and returned as he felt fit and when other work ended and DC could use him again.  He stated:  "My relationship with Dan Curtis was based on a handshake and a ten dollar bill."

Funny, watching the series currently, with the 'extra' at end of each DVD, J. Karlen stated he had no contract. What about Lara Parker?
I really didn't think there was such a huge gap in attendance.
