Willie's Groovy '70 Do
« on: September 19, 2018, 12:37:24 AM »
I was just looking at the Robservations slideshow, and for the first time as I scanned through today's installment, the differences between Willie's 1967 hair -

- and his 1970 hair -

- really struck me. But then by 1970 Willie had been out in the "real world" and apparently (even though it was really Karlen filming his appearance in Daughters of Darkness) the outside influence of the swinging '60s and '70s had caused Willie to get a "mod" hair style.  [b003]

men's fashions changed dramatically in the late 1960s and withing just a few short years...

contrast the crew-cut Joe Haskell/Burke Devlin types of 1966 to the far-out curls and muttonchops of the Quentin/Jeb/Bruno crowd just four years later and the difference is striking.

when they tried to arrange the actors' hair during the 1840s timelines the looks were even stranger.

The explosion of men's facial hair in that same period was also striking. Muttonchops were just the tip of the iceberg and, when it came to real facial hair, about the only example DS allowed. Who knows why? But it seemed like mustaches and more were sported by every other male adult in the late '60s and '70s. (Though one thing I never understood was why such mustaches got the nickname, The Porn Stache. Sure, there were plenty of male porn stars who sported mustaches (not that back then I had anything but anecdotal photographic knowledge of that  ;)), but so did many "mainstream" actors, Burt Reynolds being perhaps the most visible example. Yet, I don't ever recall Reynold's mustache being referred to as a Porn Stache. But I'm sure there must be some really great story behind how the nickname came to be. It's even still in use to this day...)

Looks like he went from Davey Jones to Leif Garrett.

things moved pretty fast for the girls too. by late 68 the "flips" were quickly being phased out in favor of a long straight center part.

and i recall being thunderstruck when they started showing up in midis/maxis in 1970.  [ghost_shocked]

maxis in 1970.  [ghost_shocked]

I was shocked by those myself. It didn't seem as if they were catching on with the public so I was more than a bit surprised when they showed up on the show. (And a funny thing about that is that until I saw the final year of DS on Scifi, I'd been pretty sure that they'd shown up in 1970PT and not the Summer of '70 storyline - granted I was only a few months off, but I would have sworn it had been in PT.)

1970PT was the absolute highpoint for hemlines before the plunge began. positively panty-skimming.

Carolyn's midi-debut ( complete with granny boots for the full effect! ) was in the "picnic" episode of SO1970. Maggie's maxi-moments started around the same time.

however it was Roxanne's shag-and-maxis combo that was really the visual cue that the 60s were over and the 70s were fully underway.

Don't forget PT1970 where Quentin carried his wife, Maggie (nee Evans) Collins over the threshold while she was in a pseudo-mini and we all sang "I see London, I see France.  I see Maggie's..."

In the early through middle seventies, when I was in junior and senior high school, maxis were a common fashion rage among the girls along with minis.  There were a few midis which were uber-minis.  I'm surprised my high school allowed them considering I grew up in a very conservative town.  Some girls dared to come bra-less.  How daring!

Of course, everything, whether donned by male or female, was made out of flashy, colorful polyester.  (Make sure to watch the Match Game episodes from that era on GSN.)  It was actually dangerous.  One misplaced cigarette (and everyone smoked back then), and an entire school would go up in flames faster than Chamberlain High on prom night with Carrie present.
