Wasn't his assistant on ATWT played by Margaret Hamilton? If she was living in NYC at that point and willing to do soaps, whu wasn't she recruited for DS? She would have been wonderful.

Like Joan Bennett, having Margaret Hamilton in the cast would have generated a ton of free publicity, which would have made both ABC and DC extremely happy.

Maybe simple economics. No one was making the Susan Lucci salaries that came along later but ATWT and Secret Storm may have offered a better contract with more guaranteed appearances. Clarice doesn't make that many appearances as Minerva Trask and she makes only a handful of appearances as Mrs. Johnson afterwards.
