I've had the chance to watch the first five eps of the show and I'm wondering if I and some of the reviewers have watched the same show because I'm enjoying it and for the most part I'm not seeing most of the flaws that they've found with it. And one of the best things is that it's the female characters that are often driving the plot. For example, unlike the original show, Maureen is not reduced to scenes of her making dinner, washing clothes, and standing around fretting - she's an astrophysicist, and her knowledge is central to much of the goings on. And Judy is a doctor and her knowledge has been needed on several occasions. And having a female Dr. Smith who's motives are just as twisted if not more so as those of the original Dr. Smith in the outset of the original series is certainly an added plus. In one instance I can't believe how she manipulates one of her fellow castaways! And it's almost as if she does it purely for her own amusement at creating strife in the group and undo heartache in the individual manipulated.

What's also interesting is that I've noticed that when it comes to the comments to most of the articles I've read, yes, there are those who don't like the show, but those are definitely outnumbered by the people who do. And almost universally the people who do like the show make a point of saying they were also fans of the original, so it's not simply a new audience who's enjoying it.

Lost in Space Creators on the Best Character: The Robot

I'm not ashamed to admit that one scene involving the robot (which I certainly won't spoil) actually caused my eyes to well up. So, unless you're heartless, expect to possibly have a similar reaction...

MB, I'm so glad you're enjoying it!  I wish I had the time to watch it (even free for a month).  As you know, I'm a big LIS fan.  You know what a kvetch I was about the made-for-TV version of The Mist.  It proved horrible and was canceled.  I hope your appraisal of the LIS remake will make it a success.

Lost in Space’: Why the Mysterious and Magnificent Robot Should Be the Lead of Season 2
The ending of Season 1 gives Netflix the opportunity to make up for its mistake — it's time to make the robot the star.

I have to say, some of the things they apparently see as problems with the show are the very things I like about it. But to each his own, I suppose...

Though I do agree that the robot is a great character. And although he has little in common with the robot of the original show, in a way that's what makes him more interesting.

Did I read that right? The robot doesn't speak?

Well, he does and he doesn't - at least not like the robot in the original series did from the get go. So far, in the now eight eps that I've seen, all he's said is "Danger, Will Robinson" whenever Will is in impending danger. And for reasons I won't go into because it would be a major spoiler, that he even says that is an amazing accomplishment for the robot. But chances are his vocabulary will expand down the road - especially if there's a second season of the show.

This is a well done interview with Parker Posey. Her role in the remake is discussed in the broader context of her career. I was amused that she asked another actress if she thought they were doing an episode of Columbo.

Great article! Thanks for the link, Gothick.  [snow_smiley]

And that scene in which Posey asks her co-star if she felt like they were doing Columbo is really quite a good one, and it does sort of play as something one might see on that show, so I can see why Posey thought that...
