OT- Orbach's Department Stores

Good Day to The Cousins!
Every time I watch an ep of DS, I liove to see the Orbach's Name in the ending credits.
Can any of you share your memories of Orbach's?
Also, does anybody think that Orbach's was one of last good department stores of the past?

I vaguely remember the  store...I was too young to shop on my own.

There was nothing "cutting edge" about clothes at Orbach's.  It didn't have the same cache as Bloomingdale's or Lord and Taylor's, nor was it as expensive.

  I went there a few times during the time DS was on the air, with a friend and her Mom. I remember thinking that an awful lot of middle aged women were trying on clothes that were too young (and frequently too tight)  for them. 

When I think of Orhbachs I think of:

Sleeveless A-line dresses which had a simple elegance that could be very flattering ( if you could wear sleeveless).
Basic sixties styles--miniskirts, taylored suits with pearls, fashions you would see Jacqueline Kennedy wear.[/size][/font]

     I remember going to the store to buy Easter dresses.  We were poor so for my family this was upscale.  I thought the childrens dresses were pretty.

Does any member know if there was a credit listed in the credits for fashions when the show was in nonpresent time periods? If not, if someone watches one of these 'period' episodes, I'd appreciate a response. I am very curious if they went with the standard Orbachs credit anyway, or if they actually credited the 'costume' makers. I have no recollection either way.

my memory is that Ohrbach's didn't get credited when the show was in a historical time period.  The person who did the costumes, whether it was choosing from what Ohrbach's sent over or what was rented for the historical time periods, was Ramse Mostoller (later she used "Mostoller" tout court).  I think she quit early in 1970 (and there's a letter from her in the DS letter book where she said she loved all of it EXCEPT working with DC and that is why she quit).  A gent named Stanley Simmons took over after her, and then the final period was that woman who did the article in one of the KLS books but whose name is eluding me at the moment.  I think she was the only one who made costumes from scratch for the show.  I am pretty sure I have read in a reputable source that the historical costumes for 1795/6/7 and 1897 were rented.

Oh! Look at Orbach's!

That gave me a flashback.  I remember the print ads advertising "Oh!rbachs."

It was a discount department store-- in other words, fashion knock-offs that I could afford as a struggling student in the early 70s.  I shopped at the Ohrbachs in the Del Amo Mall ( to tripwire) and the one on Wilshire Blvd; the latter was legend for its shoe sales.  As soon as I started making more money at college jobs (most of my earnings went to clothes and shoes), I switched to more upscale stores.  My guess is that DS chose Ohrbachs for the same reason-- a tight budget.

i never went to an ohrbach's(we had jordan marsh where i lived)but it is sad that so many of the great old department store names are now gone.

i read in the paper recently that federated dept. stores merged with may company.so most of may co.'s stores will probably become macy's(yuck!).that includes lord & taylor and marshall fields.
that's what happened with names like jordan marsh and i.magnin.macy's!

I'd like to see a book of the old costume design sketches if they still exist. I remember seeing the design plates for 1841PT in one of the books... I think it'd be great to see what they scrapped and what they kept.
