I think there was a message similar to this some time ago so you might search the archives.  I specifically remember that there was mention of The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, The Monk by Matthew Lewis, and The Mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe.

If you have the time, you might read The Tale of Terror: A History of the Gothic Romance by Edith Birkhead.  This is basically an encyclopedia and analysis of notable Gothic works.  Among the works that Birkhead cited were Frankenstein and The Plague by Mary Shelley, The Vampyre, a short novel by John Polidori, Northanger Abbey, a parody of Gothic literature by Jane Austen, Melmoth the Wanderer and Caleb Thorne (I can't remember who the author of these last two books was.)

Good luck!

The Monk - Matthew Lewis

The Castle of Otranto - Horace Walpole

Caleb Williams - William Godwin

But there are many, many more.

Caleb Williams - William Godwin

Ooh, Caleb Williams, not Caleb Thorne.  :-[  My mistake, dvlvan.  Thanks for the correction, (and the link) Luciaphil!  :)

There's an Anthony Trollope book called Dr. Thorne (albeit not a gothic). Maybe you took the two and confused them?

Anyhow, had another thought. I forgot all about Mrs. Radcliffe.

The Mysteries of Udolpho. That's kind of a core title.

As a further related point of interest, for those not aware of the fact, William Godwin was the father of Mary (Wollstonecraft Godwin) Shelley.  Mary's mother was the famous early feminist and author Mary Wollstonecraft, who in addition to her philosophical works, wrote several novels illustrating her themes.  While not "gothic" or supernatural in plot, they were very melodramatic and usually tragic. So one could say the talent was in the blood.

I would like to add Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte to the list, but be aware that the films, especially the classic one with Olivier, only cover part of the book. Would any of the following fit your list as well?

Jane Eyre  by Charlotte Bronte

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (I think he also wrote "The Canterville Ghost", or is he post-Gothic)

Hello Everybody!
I stayed up late last night until around 3 am finishing my final paper on Gothic literature. My English Professor told me that my paper was the most original paper in the class and nobody else has written about the gothic genre. I will be turning in my paper on this coming Monday.

Thank You All For Your Help!

Love, dvlvan26 who will always be a gothic literature fan/reader

Is there a better compliment from a teacher than that your work is original?  Congratulations!

If you have never read "The Woman In Black" by Susan Hill, I think you might enjoy it.  It was made into a TV movie in England, which is available on DVD, but as per my own prejudice I always think the book is better than the movie.  ;)

I had never heard of Woman in Black unitl you mentioned it. I did a little Googling and I've requested the book. The comments on IMDB make the film sound amazing. Can't wait to read this now.

Hello Cousins!

I just turned my research paper earlier today and I mentioned Dan Curtis being one of the greatest horror filmmakers and Lara Parker being a great writer in her latest books in the paper.  [cheer] [clap]
