Songs about DS or with DS references
« on: March 26, 2005, 07:32:43 PM »
I'm putting together a list of songs about DS or with references to DS characters & places.  I'm thinking about playing them all on my radio show on some upcoming Friday the 13th.  These are the ones I can think of.  Can anyone add more to this list?

Vampire State Building - Barnabas (kitchy bubblegum rock about Barnabas)

Moonrays - Dark Shadows Theme (surf/spy/exotica band with a spooky horror edge)

Book of Love - Witchcraft (alternative pop type band - song includes snippet of
Josette'sTheme and reference to Angelique, Barnabas and Josette).

Lone Ranger - Barnabus Collins (Reggae song about Barnabas)

The Damned - End of Time (classic creepy punk band - song includes snippet
of Angelique casting a spell)

Kenya Collins - Barnabas Collins, Love Bandit (Northern soul song about Barnabas)

Magenta Jets - a song about Angelique (I think this is Lara Parker's son's band - I ordered this CD years ago but never received it - anyone have a copy they'd be interested in selling?)

That's all I can think of.  Are there any more I'm missing?  For the record, I'd love to hear the Cramps cover one of the Blue Whale themes!

Lone Ranger - Barnabus Collins (Reggae song about Barnabas)
My hubby loves reggae and that song shows up at least once in his collection, but I don't think he realizes what it's about, lol.

I thought her son was in "Lions and Ghosts."  ???

Anyway, the Majenta Jets played it at the '96 Festival in L.A. and I'm sure it's on the Fest video.  Unfortunately, I don't have it, but I can get you the info if you're interested in purchasing it from one of the Fest videographers.

I don't know if you'd be interested in playing Southern country, but a singer named Kate Campbell put out a song called "When Panthers Roamed in Arkansas."  Here's the 2nd stanza; you can find a link to the rest of the lyrics next to her "Moonpie Dreams" album here.

Every afternoon I'd watch Dark Shadows on TV
scared to death that Barnabas would take a bite of me
If I were a vampire
I'd fly back when panthers roamed in Arkansas
and buffalo made their home in Tennessee

Thanks Midnite!  I'll have to check the Kate Campbell song out.  I wasn't sure if Magenta Jets was Lara's son's band.  You are right his band was Lions and Ghosts.  Magenta Jets was a goth type band who did the Angelique song I believe. I'd love to get a copy of the video, if it's available.

Here's another one I thought of:

Oneroid Psychosis - Dark Shadows Theme (a crazy dark electronic version of the DS theme)

Wow.  I think you've assembled the best DS-themed songlist ever.  I'd love to listen to the show so please let us know.

Oops, the '96 Fest tape isn't listed on Rich Blanco's site.  [sad7]  I sent out a couple of inquiries and wiill let you know when I hear back.

Thanks Midnite!  I'm planning for the DS music on Friday May 13th which would give me enough time to get all the songs together.  I have most of them but am missing a couple, and some of them are on tape instead of CD.  I'll post a reminder in case anyone wants to check it the show out online.

Thanks, that would be fantastic!

I'm sorry to say that the '96 Festival video isn't currently for sale.   :-  Neither Richard Blanco nor Guy Haines has it.   Maybe someday, but for now you could try looking for someone that purchased a copy in the past from Dave Brown.

I managed to find yet another song.

This one is by punk band "Oval Portrait" (named for the Poe story)

The title of the song is:
Barnabus Collins Has More Skeletons in His Closet Than Vincent Price   ((Great title eh? LOL!))

It's a cool song, btw.  I only listened to it once just now, but I didn't detect any Barnabas references on first hearing it.  It is a very energetic and creepy song though.  I'll have to hear it again this week and give it a better listen.

Sorry for the back to back post.  I just found out the name of the Lone Ranger's second album, which I thought was pretty neat.  It is called "Barnabas Collins in Collins Wood" and the cover features Lone Ranger dressed as a vampire. :)  Apparently his song "Barnabas Collins" (mentioned earlier in this thread) was "the biggest single Lone Ranger ever did," and the blurb on the following website describes the success of the song.  The lyrics are pretty amusing for those who haven't heard it.  He mentions Barnabas chewing on your neck "like a Wrigleys!"  :D

Midnite, I managed to track down the Majenta Jets' cd online and just ordered it.  I believe it contains the Angelique song.  Thanks for checking on the availability of the fest footage.  I'll keep an eye out for it.

Note on the Damned too.  On the album cover of their 1979 single "Love Song", Dave Vanian is holding the Barnabas cane.  Vanian is a huge DS and horror film fan.  When I saw them play on Halloween a few years back, he dedicated a song to Barnabas Collins and later on  mentioned "the people of Collinsport, Maine."
Here's a pic of the album cover -

How about the song "In My World of Dark Shadows" by Colin Stoddard.  I bought the cassette at the first Manhattan Shadows Convention.  Unfortunately it's long since worn out.  I wish I'd had the presence of mind to make a backup.  Does anyone out there have it?  I'd love to hear it again.
