Gregory Trask is the single most loathsome, despicable entity ever to appear on the show.

I'd definitely have to agree with that one. Plus, Lacy did an EXCELLENT job of getting us to hate him! *applauds JL*

It's one of my typical hairsplitting bits of metaphysics, but where behavior is concerned, I prefer to think of depravity (in the sense of energies directed towards ignoble ends) rather than evil (which I regard as at best a phantasm).

In any event, Trask wins hands down, and Gregory trumps all the other Trasks in spades.  After all, Blair was fairly honest--he was a minister of Satan, and in his debonair way, he was fairly up-front about that.  (One of my all-time favorite scenes is the climactic confrontation between Blair and Julia in the Collinwood drawing room in which he reveals the true nature of his plans for Adam and Eve.  The good doctor exclaims "That's monstrous!" and Blair, with a quiet leer, purrs "It's SUPPOSED to be.")

Trask, on the other hand, CLAIMED to be working on behalf of the Almighty.  We all know what his REAL agenda was.  And there are so many like him abroad in our nation today...

Truer words were never spoken. But at the same time it was so much fun to see the other characters catch on to him (Episode #863 is just wonderful, with spectacular scenes between Edward & Trask and Judith & Trask) and dole out his richly deserved fate.

I've always thought the human villains on DS (e.g. Nathan Forbes, Gabriel Collins, and especially Gregory Trask) were much more monstrous than any vampire, witch, werewolf, or Satanist.  As Rainey articulated so beautifully, Gregory is pure scum.  Every time I see the character, I feel the urge to scrub myself with disinfectant.  His crimes were numerous: impersonating a  man of God, abusing and possibly molesting children in his care, arranging for the murder of his wife, driving Judith insane, and cheating rich widows of their money.  I think he deserved far worse treatment than he actually got.

i don't know about "evil" but both characters are certainly among the most annoying of thier storylines.they contribute greatly to the campiness the show is sometimes known for.

I don't know about that: Gregory Trask is a fire-and-brimstone megalomaniac who believes he speaks for God.  The part simply can't be played low-key.  It cries out (literally) for an over-the-top performance.

Nicky Blair, on the other hand, comes across as suave and urbane.....which makes for an attractive emissary of Hell.  Which Devil is going to gather more souls: the one with the horns and pitchfork, or the one with the smooth talk and the gleam in his eye?  ;)

I think both actors played those parts exactly right.

Gregory Trask murdered his beloved wife, then attempted to drive his second wife Judith insane to gain control of her money, business and become Master of Collinwood... which is the only thing he really wanted in life, this makes him the most evil person alive, Gregory received his just rewards in the end, and by a Collins.  ^-^

Oh, definitely Gregory Trask.  He'd even scandalize an '80's televangelist.

I loved the performances of both Jerry Lacy and Humbert Allen Astredo in their respective roles.

Both actors are, to my taste, thespian perfection incarnate.

Oh, now I don't know Gerard...
he'd have to dye his hair purple, get a boufant going and slather on lots of non-waterproof mascara in order to really compete with some of those bozos.

In Trask's defense (weak as it may be) at least he was honest about his motives.  I believe that Rev. Trask was sincere about wanting to find and purge evil from the world.  He did use underhanded methods to prosecute Victoria once he came to believe she was the witch, he was cruel, and he was a jerk, but I don't think he was as beastly as his descendant Gregory, who was a total hypocrite.
