Okay, so I''m the thorn in the foot.  Why do I keep watching this drudge?  It's dull.  It's a rehash of Fear the Walking Dead.  No one cares about the soap-operaticism of the main characters.  It doesn't make sense.  The plots and dialogue are predicable. Few monsters have eaten anyone.  The monsters are our world's creation that've become mutated rather than coming from another dimension.  I've figured that out.  So what has that to do with King's novella which is almost superb?  Why do I continue to watch?

I'm sorry, but still dull, dull, dull.  Nothing new to see here; move on.  So why do I keep watching?  Well, maybe episode five might finally deliver.  Hopefully.  Other than the premise of a fog with "something out there" and survivors stuck in a store (in King's novella, it was a handful in a supermarket, in this series it's hundreds in a mall), there's nothing from King's work.  The only character, the religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody, is quickly killed off.  And enough with the Peyton Place stuff.  It doesn't enhance or flesh-out the characters.  They all come off whiny.  One hopes the monsters (if they ever really show up) will eat them and deliver us.  Why not, as King usually does, show us normal everyday folk with real worries like will the store honor double-coupon days?  When the apocalypse happens, what will you be doing?  Trying to figure out how to pay your home-owner's insurance installment while budgeting in this week's grocery shopping, or being wrapped up in who in your neighborhood is having sex and why?

Want to create a gripping story?  Take ordinary people and place them in extraordinary circumstances that are horrific.  And don't drag it out.  That's what made The Walking Dead work (although now it's really dragging; time to wrap it up).

Still dull, dull, dull.  More Peyton Place stuff, an entire episode (#5) and then some man-eating leaches at the end (to go along with the man-eating cockroaches and the man-eating moths).  Honestly, the whole insipid Luke-and-Laura trials and travails stuff even when they battled some evil mad Greek scientist guy was better than this dreg.  But I still keep watching and hoping.

I haven't been watching, so I don't have any opinion. And I can see why you wouldn't be liking the things you've complained about, Gerard.  [nodassent]  But an interesting thing is that ever since the show debuted it has consistently been among the top five trending Thursday shows on tvguide.com. For that to happen, some people out there must be enjoying the show...

I agree with you, MB!  I think a huge portion of the audience did not read the novella or saw the film adaptation, so this is "original material" to them.  And how it's developing, it is.  It has nothing in common with the source (other than the afore-mentioned Mrs. Carmody who's offed within minutes).  That's what's so aggravating to me as a fan of the novella and the cinematic version.  And the heavy layers of Peyton Place stuff is predictable, a sign of bad writing.  When a "situation" is set up, I know how it will end and, shor-nuff, that's exactly what happens.  But, like I said, I keep hoping.

Well, honestly there are very few instances where I've read a book and then watched the TV/Movie version and I was really happy with it, so I can feel your pain. Although, it's often a good idea to pay attention to how those involved in a project describe what they're doing. Some really do attempt a faithful version of the book, with maybe a few changes here and there, but others will claim to be faithfully adapting a book while they really do anything but. Though others say they're taking the book as a guideline but they'll be going off in their own directions. From what you've written, I suspect the latter might be the case here.
