I'll be interesting to watch.  I loved Darabond's 2007 cinematic version (not too thrilled with the ending) and it stayed pretty faithful to King's novella.  King stated he was inspired by The Outer Limits episode "The Feasibility Study," one of the creepiest episodes of the series.  Of course, many of the performers in Darabond's version moved over to his The Walking Dead.  I'm just wondering how long they can extend the happenings in King's novella into something more than a two-hour movie.

The original ending in Stephen King's novella is different, with a glimmer of hope for the survivors. The basic premise may not be enough to sustain a long-term series.

I just watched it on-line (our local cable charges for Spike) and I wasn't impressed, but I'll give it a chance and try another one or two episodes.  One of my complaints is that the mist seems to be spreading over several days and no one knows about it or is reporting it.  That, of course, doesn't make sense.  Anyway, I think the actor who plays the principal is the same one who played the principal in Carrie 2002.

I'll watch the next several episodes on-line; like I said, my cable company now charges for Spike.  From the pilot, it seems like a retread of Fear the Walking Dead.  The apocalypse happens, a strained family is torn apart by their own actions and the apocalypse and yadda-yadda-yadda.  Virtually none of the original characters from King's novella are in it.  We had a glimpse of Mrs. Carmody, the crazed fundamentalist woman who thought humankind was paying for its sins, but she's quickly dispatched by the monsters.  She was central to the novella but in this adaptation she gets a few minutes of screen-time then gets her jaw ripped off and dragged away to be eaten.  King's works always, well, work because he takes normal people with non-soap-opera lives and places them in horrific situations.  In this version of The Mist it seems, from the pilot, all unrealistic soap-opera.  Well, let's see where it goes.

Okay, so I''m the thorn in the foot.  Why do I keep watching this drudge?  It's dull.  It's a rehash of Fear the Walking Dead.  No one cares about the soap-operaticism of the main characters.  It doesn't make sense.  The plots and dialogue are predicable. Few monsters have eaten anyone.  The monsters are our world's creation that've become mutated rather than coming from another dimension.  I've figured that out.  So what has that to do with King's novella which is almost superb?  Why do I continue to watch?

I'm sorry, but still dull, dull, dull.  Nothing new to see here; move on.  So why do I keep watching?  Well, maybe episode five might finally deliver.  Hopefully.  Other than the premise of a fog with "something out there" and survivors stuck in a store (in King's novella, it was a handful in a supermarket, in this series it's hundreds in a mall), there's nothing from King's work.  The only character, the religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody, is quickly killed off.  And enough with the Peyton Place stuff.  It doesn't enhance or flesh-out the characters.  They all come off whiny.  One hopes the monsters (if they ever really show up) will eat them and deliver us.  Why not, as King usually does, show us normal everyday folk with real worries like will the store honor double-coupon days?  When the apocalypse happens, what will you be doing?  Trying to figure out how to pay your home-owner's insurance installment while budgeting in this week's grocery shopping, or being wrapped up in who in your neighborhood is having sex and why?

Want to create a gripping story?  Take ordinary people and place them in extraordinary circumstances that are horrific.  And don't drag it out.  That's what made The Walking Dead work (although now it's really dragging; time to wrap it up).

Still dull, dull, dull.  More Peyton Place stuff, an entire episode (#5) and then some man-eating leaches at the end (to go along with the man-eating cockroaches and the man-eating moths).  Honestly, the whole insipid Luke-and-Laura trials and travails stuff even when they battled some evil mad Greek scientist guy was better than this dreg.  But I still keep watching and hoping.

I agree with you, MB!  I think a huge portion of the audience did not read the novella or saw the film adaptation, so this is "original material" to them.  And how it's developing, it is.  It has nothing in common with the source (other than the afore-mentioned Mrs. Carmody who's offed within minutes).  That's what's so aggravating to me as a fan of the novella and the cinematic version.  And the heavy layers of Peyton Place stuff is predictable, a sign of bad writing.  When a "situation" is set up, I know how it will end and, shor-nuff, that's exactly what happens.  But, like I said, I keep hoping.

Well, honestly there are very few instances where I've read a book and then watched the TV/Movie version and I was really happy with it, so I can feel your pain. Although, it's often a good idea to pay attention to how those involved in a project describe what they're doing. Some really do attempt a faithful version of the book, with maybe a few changes here and there, but others will claim to be faithfully adapting a book while they really do anything but. Though others say they're taking the book as a guideline but they'll be going off in their own directions. From what you've written, I suspect the latter might be the case here.

I've been holding out; don't ask me why.  Again, maybe hope springs eternal.  Each episode is more convoluted than the previous, the plots are all over the place, and none of the characters are likeable.  Not a one.  I wish they'd be offed by whatever is suppose to be in that mist.  All we've seen are man-eating cockroaches, moths and leeches.  And they're not that frightening.  Oh, and the Peyton Place stuff has gotten more, um, Peytonish.  There's even now a Luke-and-Laura thing going on involving two teenagers and a supposed rape.  Ho-hum.  It's pretty much a rehashing of The Walking Dead, including a crazy Episcopal priest.  Well, there's only a few episodes left.  Maybe those will make something out of this mess.  I've read reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and other critical sites and they're not so kind.  If anyone wants to watch it to form their own opinion, the whole spiel is on the Spike TV website (sans commercials; the only good thing) where I've been watching it.  When you've got nothing better to do after you've done the laundry and vacuumed the living room and GSN has hours and hours of Family Feud reruns, take a look.

Okay, the whining critic is back.  So, I just watched the latest episode.  The survivors in the mall are at each other's throats and breaking into battling tribes.  The survivors in the Episcopal church are at each other's throats and breaking into battling tribes.  The survivors in the hospital are at each other's throats and breaking into battling tribes.  You get the gist.  There was one neat scene.  At the church, a psychotic teenage boy tries to murder an old woman he thinks is a witch.  She manages to fight him off, break a window allowing the mist inside and get out, locking the door with the psycho teenager inside.  A few scenes later we see what's left of him:  a rotted, melting corpse.  That was the highlight.  Three episodes left.  You know, despite how awful this adaptation is, I'm going to stick it out.

After I watch it tomorrow, I'll give my opinion.  You'll know what it'll probably be.  I can't imagine Stephen King being happy about this.  Has anyone else watched it?  The makers promise that in the last episode they'll reveal what's going on.  It's not obviously in King's novella unless in a very obscure way.  In the source (and the cinematic adaptation), a military experiment at a base had gone wrong (hinted at by soldiers also trapped in the supermarket) and a rift opened into another dimension allowing all the horrible monsters to cross over and begin to populate Earth.  So far, other than a brief mention of something happening at a local military base, this has nothing to do with horrific monsters.  It's about a bunch of unlikeable characters who experience hallucinations.

I forgot to give my "critique" of last Thursday's episode.  Spike TV "burped" during it and I had to wait a few days before I could view the entire show.  To be perfectly honest, I really don't remember what happened.  All I know was that it involved more Peyton Placeish melodrama and was all over the place.  No monsters.  Totally unlikeable characters being annoying.  That pretty much sums it up.  TV took other King works and made them work.  The epic novels were turned into mini-series (the best being The Stand).  Even the novella The Langoliers became a short mini-series and it worked.  The 2002 version of Carrie was a three-hour movie and the best of the cinematic versions (sorry for the heresy regarding the 1976 version which is a classic, but this one was better; 2013 stunk, a simple rehashing of elements from '76 and '02 and adding nothing new other than the bullies posting their abuse of Carrie [Chloe Grace Moretz - Carolyn in DS12] in the locker room on youtube - how trendy).  This version of The Mist is so far from the mark it can't be considered something "based upon the novel" (note it doesn't say novella) by King.  Well, I'll give my critique of tonight's episode after I watch it tomorrow.

I wonder if the series would've done better if it was a re-imagining of King's novella (not a remake of the cinematic version) wherein the characters from the original work are tapped in the supermarket and, after a few decide to flee, end up in a motel on their way to Hartford, CT (from which they received a broadcast as in the novella and the initial ending of the film) and pressed on.  It could've been a whole different and better creature than Spike made with its convoluted plots about date-rape and cross-gendered teens dealing with parents.  None of the characters (only one transitioned from the novella and she was quickly offed) were sympathetic.  Not one.  When someone got dispatched, there were only cheers of gratitude.

Sometimes it's just best to portray the characters as King has done in his works.  In the various versions of Carrie, she's portrayed as a thin, fairly attractive girl.  The first two were classic; the third with Chloe Moretz was a dud.  However, in the novel she is a rather pudgy teen with clumps of acne (her nickname among the bullies was "puddin'").  Her mother was a fat woman with long gray hair tied in a bun and rimless glasses pressed into her pudgy face.  King drew Carrie from a composite of two girls he remembered from high school.  We all had a girl like that when we were in high school.  Ours was a poor, tormented creature, totally friendless, taunted with the nicknames "spider" and "eagle-claw."  She lived in the shadows, trying to hide as she walked the corridors between classes.  We all had them; we can relate and identify; that's what makes King's characters work - we know them.  Spacek, Bettis and Moretz were just too "pretty" even when they were "uglied" up.  But they, despite dramatic expertise, could not portray the "Carries" we had in our schools.  Our Carrie was humiliated at her high school graduation.  Having no friends, she had no social skills or understanding of fashion.  Our graduation was formal:  evening gowns and tuxedos.  She came in a pink dress (like the one in Carrie) that was too short to hide the white sweat socks and yellow shoes she wore.  When her name was called for her diploma, scores hooted and howled and "spider!" and "eagle-claw!" reverberated.  She moved as quickly as she could, walking with her arms swinging, her head downcast, her shoulders shrugged as someone yelled:  "She looks like a monkey!"  All that was missing was the bucket of blood.  We all saw it in high school; cinematic versions should stick with what it was like.  That's what draws our sympathy.

Gerard
