Lots of scene time for Edith, which is unusual. She's obviously unhappy being married to Gabriel; who can blame her? She's starved for attention and doesn't seem fussy about where it comes from. She would probably like to have a fling with Quentin but he is otherwise occupied. Gerard seems to agreeable enough to her advances, as long as it suits his purposes.
Enter Thayer David as Mordecai Grimes, a farmer who seems as obsessive as Trask. There is a lot of animosity between him and Quentin over farmland and cows. This bit of information comes way, way out of left field and never really becomes a major plot thread. Thayer is, of course, absolutely first rate but the character is not my favorite Thayer characterization.
Mordecai is stalked in the woods, apparently saved by the timely arrival of Randall Drew. They find that someone has left a calling card on a convenient tree. It's the same symbol that was found on Lorna Belle's corpse and on Quentin's ring. Which gets enough camera time to deserve its own credit.
Randall unwisely lets it be known that he was to meet Lamar Trask in a park. Lamar is unfashionably late but someone else does show up. Randall is so shocked to see who it is that he's extremely easy prey. He doesn't put up much of a fight. And the murderer thoughtfully leaves a memento, same symbol as before.
Miss Marple would have solved this by now.
