I guess the idea that the part of Desmond was intended for Roger Davis meant there was always that possibility.

And John Karlen made Desmond so much his own that I have an extremely hard time even attempting picturing RD in the part!!)

Absolutely. Roger's unique brand of scenery chewing would have made Desmond a caricature, rather than a character.
