OT - Jerry Orbach
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:05:56 PM »

I was sad to hear on the news today of the passing of Jerry Orbach of TV's Law and Order fame.
Mr. Orbach was also known for his role in the movie Dirty Dancing and for his role as Billy Flynn in the original Broadway production of Chicago.

He has a DS connection as well.  He was in the original Broadway company of Promises, Promises with DS's own Amanda Harris, Donna McKechnie. Jerry Orbach will be greatly missed in all areas of entertainment.

Minja, thanks for the connection.

Does anyone know anything about when that play took place?

Thanks,

Patti....who is so sad about this terrible loss.

I heard that sad and unexpected news on my car radio yesterday afternoon.  I always liked him and he was my favorite on Law and Order - and don't forget his performance as Lumiere the Candlestick in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Also, whenever I would see his name I would think of the department store in NYC where some of the DS wardrobe was purchased.  Yeah, I'm that indoctrinated to DS Think.

Promises, Promises ran 1968-1972 according to the Internet Broadway Database.  Dunno how long Orbach or McKechnie stayed with the show.

Thanks, Minja.  I didn't know that.

His DS connection is even stronger.  A friend mentioned that he was in the 70s movie "The Sentinel" with Robert Gerringer.

Also, I've mentioned once or twice that I'm a Law & Order fan ::) (I'm patiently waiting for an L&O Channel, heh), and the DS alums who appeared in episodes during the time JO was on the show include Dana Elcar, Gail Strickland, Abe Vigoda, Michael Maguire, George DiCenzo, David Groh (2), Florence Stanley, and Vince O'Brien (recurring) from the original series; Roy Thinnes (2), Barbara Blackburn, Jim Fyfe, and Joanna Going from the revival series; and Blair Brown from the pilot.  Granted, not all appeared on screen with him-- examples are Groh and O'Brien, who played judges, and Blair Brown, who was an attorney-- and I'm not picturing in my mind that Orbach had any courtroom scenes with them.  I also may have forgotten somebody, but hey, that I can recall this much is scary enough.  ;)

Don't feel bad Midnite...at least you remember interesting points and
aren't flaying about randomly associating him with defunct department stores.

Hey, I thought it was hysterical!
