People use them every day in conversation. It often sounds very odd not to use them. It's more so in writing that split infinitives are frowned upon...

(Once I became aware what split infinitives are, it started to sound wrong to use and hear them. It does also sound off to use them sometimes too.  I feel better not using them, and have been noticing when I use them last few years, and stopping myself.  Not telling anyone else what to do.)
