The forum will soon offer more than 300 extra smileys (quick - someone get the smelling salts for Gothick! (Just kidding there, G.  ;D)) so quickly finding that right smiley in the popup window might prove to be a bit daunting - particularly when there's currently no sorting method implimented in the window. However, it doesn't have to be that way because the system will allow us to sort the smileys by either their code or their descriptions. So, the question is: which method do you think would make it easiest for you to find the smiley you're looking for?

Oh please smilie one, I would prefer the smilies by subject, such as all the drinking smilies together, the dancing skelton smilies together, the devils all together, birthday cake smilies together and the smilie skelton's for sure all together.  I hope we get to keep him [santa_cheesy] past the holiday season.  He's my fav!

Sorting by subject would do nicely. The whipping/kinky smilies should definitely have their own category, preferably denoted with a velvet rope or pole of some sort... chortle.

Apparently this isn't of much concern to too many cousins, but considering that everyone who did share their preference chose to have them sorted by description, that's the way we'll go.  ;)

I've started sorting and have completed A through C. Only 23 more letters to go.  :D

(And I've added over 40 new smileys - and more will be added as I sort through the rest of the letters.)

Is there a difference between these names and the code name used to access the smiley?  I frequently use "crowdhappy" and I don't see that listed in the "Cs."

[crowdhappy]

And, what about the musicians?  I have no idea what they are called?

It's stifling to be limited to only ten smilies per post.  How can anyone do any great art work?  And there are all these new smilies to use!!!  Can't the limit be changed to 20 or something?

Is there a difference between these names and the code name used to access the smiley?

90% percent of the time the code and the description are nearly exactly the same - the differences being the codes are always one word while the description might be two or more words, or the code might be a combination of numbers and letters and the description will always use words. For instance, the description for this
Code: [Select]
[brushteeth]is "Brush Teeth"

Quote
I frequently use "crowdhappy" and I don't see that listed in the "Cs."

It's in the "Happy" section under H.  ;)

Quote
And, what about the musicians?  I have no idea what they are called?

The description for that one is "Band" and it uses the
Code: [Select]
[82e4]
If someone isn't quite sure of a smiley's description, the best thing to do is to scan through the display to try to find it.  :)

Nope. This is an issue that the admins/mods have discussed at length (both privately behind the scenes and publicly as part of discussions that have cropped up with other admins/mods on the YaBB/SMF sites), and while no one means to stifle creativity or expression, the consensus is that 10 smileys per post are more than enough to get the point across in a post.  :)

Well, something VERY odd is going on. All the smileys were sorted correctly when I finished. But shortly thereafter the smileys for W and Y disappeared from the popup window. However, then they suddenly came back - but the sorting order was all out of whack. Instead of A through W followed by Y (there aren't any smileys with descriptions starting with X or Z), the sort order is now as follows:

  • B, D, E, F, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, T, U, V, G + J (mixed together), Q + W (mixed together), R, and A + C + S (mixed together).
The correct sort order codes are in the database, but the JavaScript that displays the smileys in the popup window is quite obviously having some sort of nervous breakdown when it comes to arranging the smileys correctly. But I'm not going to try to figure out what's going on with it because SMF has already issued another upgrade to the system (version 1.0.1). Perhaps whatever weirdness caused this has been fixed. But I won't know whether or not it has until after I've installed the upgrade, which will most probably take several days to complete...

In the meantime, just refer to the sort order above. Well - unless it changes again - in which case all bets will be off...
