*I* killed him when he got old and ugly, and I made a new Tate who was young and handsome--and now, he says, gazing at the "dead" dummy and taking the head into his arms, "He's gone, too."  Tate sobs.  No one is gone, says Chris--this thing is a creation, and you know it. My creation--and you destroyed him--you destroyed him! cries Tate--why did I let

Oh my gosh, I am cracking up reading this....lololololol!!!!

Michael is snotty. He & David should get along fine, but, since David was 'to the manor born', he'll think he's the cat's pajamas in regards to some novea riche snot face. Smack him across the kisser, I say.

The typical anti-continuity when Carolyn says she has a 'cousin' (Amy) @ Collinwood just about your age.

Patti,,,,still laughing.

Not really. Carolyn refers to both her cousin (meaning David) and a little girl staying at collinwood (meaning Amy). Most people will remain ignorant of the Jennings/Collins connection.

N Barrett VO.  Why is 99 year old Tate surprised to see Quentin young?  Weird Chris reaction to detached Tate head... Don B is given strange stuff to react to, as with finding out the Hand is back on Petofi.  Body parts reactions, Don's your man.

We see Chris's portrait-- good-- but we see throiugh it from the back.  Flimsiest canvas ever...  Inb the antique shop, we have a silent stretch, where Phillip, Michael, and Carolyn are all wondering about the others, not knowing what to do or say.  Interesting.

Portrait done, doesn't work, Chris transforms.  Violet Welles.

I wonder why the portrait doesn't work? Just thinking out loud, but, do we ever find out why? (You'd think I'd remember this stuff.)

I think because Charles didn't actually complete it before the werewolf got him. Apparently Petofi's gift requires a finished product to be operational.

Creepy, creepy Michael in this ep. Bleargh.

I maintain that everything we've seen in present-day Tate shows that he definitely no longer has any powers.  His paintings are uninspired compared to 1897.  He's OLD, when he should have been able to paint himself young and immortal.  He said point blank to Chris before starting that he knew for a fact that it wouldn't work.

Tate went to the lengths of creating an animatronic dummy, a young one, to speak for him.  This means something.  It indicates someone obsessed with youth.  Why?  Because during the time he had his powers, he could have, at any time, painted himself, but didn't think of it.  That error haunts and obsesses him the rest of his life.

When we last see young Tate, his power has been restored.  However, was Petofi killed?  Would that have ended Tate's power?  Was there a brief time limit on his restored powers that Petofi didn't tell him about?  Did a surviving Petofi and Tate meet up later, with Tate angering Petofi yet again (inevitably), so that the powers are taken away again, for good?

We can't know how his powers are gone, but clearly they are.  Everything we see in 1969 indicates this.

I have to wonder if the power of Quentin's portrait came from Petofi and not Tate. I really don't remember the connection between P & T. I want to remember that Petofi gave Tate his powers. Why Petofi needed anyone for anything is beyond me. I remember thinking as a kid that he was invincible - that there was no way he could be defeated. (And it was somewhat taxing on my 11 year old constitution.)

I too remember having an overwhelming sense that Petofi was all-powerful, once he got the Hand back.  This viewing, I noted how little his powers seemed to increase with the Hand, if at all.  I also "remember" a present-day scenario in which the world was going to be destroyed, if Petofi got his Hand back (for the second time?)...

Tate's power was definitely given to Tate by Petofi.  Petofi took Tate's power away for a few weeks, and only restored them in the final days of the 1897 storyline, for the purpose of creating Garth Blackwood to kill Aristede.  So I wondered if Petofi had built a short time limit into this restoration, so that they went away shortly after this one purpose was accomplished.   Petofi really had a lot of contempt for Tate at this point, who had been pestering and begging Petofi, with Petofi saying he'd never have his powers again.

It seemed as if they wanted to bring Petofi back, in the present, someday, but if he's dead, as it seems, that might have ended Tate's power.  Or Tate's power could have been permanent as long as not removed by Petofi, but things seem otherwise.

I envy you, dom, for not being able to remember these details, so some suspense is still possible... but you seem to want to know, so...  The power of Q's portrait remains after Tate dies, so either the portrait's power is permanent, or tied to Petofi who must still be alive (even in 1995).

Petofi who must still be alive (even in 1995)
That actually jibes with what one of the writers said about the subsequent fates of the DS characters. Just can't find the link right now.
I have to wonder if the power of Quentin's portrait came from Petofi and not Tate.

I've always thought that. Tate painted the portrait, but it was Petofi that imbued it with it's power. Petofi so much as says so in 1897. And considering there is no Petofi on the scene in 1969 to imbue Chris' portrait with any sort of power, of course painting it was doomed to failure. Though sadly for Chris, he has no knowledge of Petofi's part in Quentin's cure, so he has a desperate hope that forcing Tate to paint him will cure him even though it can't possibly work...
