Collinwood House
« on: January 23, 2004, 11:21:35 PM »
Does anyone know what the place that provided the exterior shots of the new Collinwood house is now?  I remember reading it was a girl's school at the time, but was wondering what its current state is.
Thanks!  :)

Our beloved Collinwood is the Carey House, aka Seaview Terrace, located in Newport, Rhode Island.  It is currently utilized by Salve Regina College and where it is, or has been, used as a dormitory as well as for music and art classes and for study halls.  You can go visit it, at least the grounds.

I got a chance to visit there this summer. My web site has some pictures and my comments:

Enjoyed looking at those photos of Seaview Terrace, LdyAnne. I didn't realize that the view on the show is really the back. The real front doesn't look as attractive. 8)

What a terrific way to display photos of the mansion, LdyAnne!  It makes the layout of the house very clear for anyone that hasn't been there.

And I enjoyed your Halloween photos too, btw.  All of your club's decorations were fantastic (as always!), but that werewolf in the tree is just TOO precious.

Evan Hanely looks too yummy to eat!  You'd ruin his face.

Now that I see it all together how does one enter the house through the tower?  Kinda hard to do looks like.  Most of the shots we are used to seeing also have lots of trees or shrubs about so it's a bit hard to see there isn't really a door there.  Seems better to go through the front door.

I think the Lynhurst mansion (Collinwood in House and Night of Dark Shadows) entrance looks a bit more imposing.

There's no way to enter the house through the tower. However, there is a door to the left side of the tower:

Looks like either the servant's entrance or the fire escape.  Hardly, a door any decent self-respecting rich person would walk through. ;)

LOL!  I was a bit surprised myself about that cheap looking staircase.

Actually, the door is an exit from the house's foyer to the terrace. If any servants were allowed to use it, they were probably waiting on the people on the terrace.  ;)

The servants' entrances were probably on the other side of the house (in areas that were never seen on DS). One door leads to the old kitchen (now the laundry room) and the other to an area where the present cleaning staff keeps their supplies.

LOL!  I was a bit surprised myself about that cheap looking staircase.

As for the stairs, the fire escapes were added in the '50s after the building was first converted to a school. There are actually several, though the others are a bit less conspicuous.  :D

OH!  lol.  I thought it looked like something on the back of a grocery store ;)

As for those who have visited, you're very lucky to have seen it.  I would give anything to go there someday.

Great pictures Stuart. i went to "collinwood" seaview back in 94.  took alot of pictures back then, i will try to post them onto one of the yahoo sites and then link them back onto here. iam only about 1 1/2 hours drive away from seaview and i was planning on going there again within the next two months. i thought i was talking to a landscaper when i was there, but he turned out to be the owner !, a really nice guy.  -robert
