Just what IS Nathan?

Presumably he's in the military.  He wears a uniform.  I believe he's introduced as Lieutenant.  At times, I think (don't really remember), there are references to his military duties.  But, he seems to work for the Collins family.  Today when he came, Barnabas asked if there was a problem at the shipyard.  Surely the Army or Navy, or whatever he was part of, didn't loan their officers to local business.

Perhaps the Navy has commissioned the Collins Family to supply some ships and Nathan is in charge of overseeing the activity. This would make sense to have one of their own, an officer, on top of things.

Nah they just wanted to put him in a tight uniform!! and that uniform is tight!(not that I notice  these things!)

I couldn't agree with you more, Jennifer; Nathan (Crothers) filled out that uniform very nicely indeed!

Nathan is an officer in the navy.  I am woefully ignorant on that period's military history, but I suppose it's conceivable as others have pointed out, that Joshua's shipbuilding business had a naval contract of some sort and that Nathan was responsible for being a go-between or some such thing.

Nathan was a Lieutenant in the US Navy, (a typical sailor the way he chases the ladies, gotta love his aggenda guys). I would also think that this is further explained since he was originally from Baltimore and probably attended or had connections with The Naval Academy in Annapolis, although this is not actually mentioned in the show and is speculation on my part.

The Collins family owned the shipyard. I think it's a good speculation that the navy commissioned the Collins family to build ships. Lieutenant Forbes could have been assigned to supervise the building of the ships, according to naval specifications. It was never mentioned where it was, but the naval base must have been close by the shipyard. I like the title of this topic, "Just What Is Nathan?" He's a rat in a navy uniform!
