From the LA Times review FX's 'The Strain' has creepy, old-fashioned fun with vampires--

"Shouting advice and invective at the characters of 'The Strain' ... conjured memories of shows gone by. 'Dark Shadows,' 'Night Stalker,' the miniseries 'Salem's Lot' were tales born in a more innocent time, before the knowing smirk and twisted romance of modern horror tried to convince us that vampires are hot, witches just feminists with control issues, and that werewolves and zombies are not monsters but metaphors for the human condition.

'The Strain' is having none of that.

thoughts on episode one?

I wasn't super impressed. it certainly wasn't as "scary" as all get out as it's been reported. and there was some extraneous subplot with the main character's ex-wife.

I also found the main actor's (who's almost completely bald) wig extremely distracting.

I haven't seen a wig that bad since Cassandra Collins skipped town. [ghost_rolleyes]

I've enjoyed the first two episodes, but the 2nd episode last weekend had about 30 minutes of filler material it seemed... I think this would have been a better mini-series rather than a longer season. Everything must be dragged out to elongate the story of course. I agree with you Michael C, the whole child custody battle, and not spending enough time with your kid sub-plot is completely boring, and the show comes to a screeching halt with this material.

You would think that the producers would really want to knock the socks off the viewers for the 2nd installment, but it seemed to fall a little flat to me... But the "good" stuff was pretty good actually.

I like the idea of going back to an ugly, non-romanticized type vampire (nothing against Barnabas of course), and I do like Del Toro. We'll see if it gets any better, as I haven't watched the third installment yet.

Thanks for all the updates MB!

I've been enjoying this show so far... It's finally getting better after episodes 2 and 3 almost made me lose interest completely! The vamps are now starting to be a city-wide threat it seems.  [ghost_shocked]
