Nice twitches in Nick's face, as Victoria refuses the painting's restoration, and won't even let him babysit with it, or vice versa, while pining for Cassandra...   Why doesn't Nick already know the whole story about Vicki and 1795?   Nick attempts an exorcism in reverse....

The minute Vicki leaves Nicholas after refusing his request even merely to borrow the painting, we can see the displeasure in his face. As she heads upstairs, the unsuspecting Vicki hears the rumble of thunder.

Next, Nicholas queries Roger and immediately becomes interested when Roger mentions Vicki's trip to 1795--and the details of Trask's exorcism of her. Roger's answers are rather vague, but that won't stop Nick. Having gotten all he can out of Roger, Nicholas sends him off to bed. He sits by the fire (perhaps a reminder of home helps him to think) to ruminate on what he’s learned: Trask exorcised Angelique in the same place where he exorcised Vicki Winters. Vicki Winters knows where the tree is, and she will lead me there. I will perform the ceremony, and the ashes of Angelique will return to human form. This is the key I needed to find you, Angelique. Victoria Winters is the key! Upstairs, Vicki slumbers on, but not for long.

Nicholas puts Vicki into a trance and forces her to relive the exorcism, which proves to be almost as traumatic as the actual event. Finally he sends her back to the house. After Vicki leaves, as Nicholas faces the tree and raises his hands in a gesture of command, someone runs across a corner of the scene. Nicholas says the requisite words, and commands Angelique, Return! Return! Return! His efforts are rewarded as lightning flashes and once again we hear the unearthly screams of the damned.

Oh, yes--Jeff finally realizes that he IS Peter Bradford, after all.

Vickie walks in on Nicholas casting a spell over her painting and she takes it from his clutches. He later casts a spell on her and makes me think why not cast a spell to get the painting.  This spell sends her in search of the tree were Cassandra was burned and she wanders about in her flowing nightdress.

I thought that about his just making her give him the painting, too.  That's the problem with a near-omnipotent villain.......

Nicholas doesn't resort to force because after all, doing evil is a matter of free will.

And he's not nearly so omnipotent as you might think--wait and see!  [ghost_wink]

I felt like I was watching a porn movie during the Clark/Haskell scene. Not sure I can swallow Clark's relief at being peter Bradford. But I suppose having some idea is better than no idea.

DarkLady, every time Nicholas uses his hands elaborately to cast a spell (or whatever) I think of you. I liked the scenes between Moltke & HHA. I feel like I have never seen N. Blair before. I am much more interested in him as a character this time around and look forward to appreciating the character and HHA's performance. Love Vicki's attitude toward Blair & his wanting the painting. I always dig a strong Vicki. Plus, it makes sense in the scheme of things.

I also enjoyed the scene with Roger and Blair. I liked Edmonds' dialogue - it was typical Roger Collins. Blair gets all he needs out of Roger's telling of Vicki's plight in the past. Blair tells us how he will bring Ange back. I thought the tree was burned to the ground in 1795 convincing Trask that Vicki was the witch. Blair has a much calmer, confident and steadfast way of using warlockcraft. I like it (today). The soundpeople got it right - Blair's voice echoed when Vicki was hearing it but when we see him his voice is reverbless. Liked the music too - a dreamlike sequence from the DS LP cut Night Of The Pentagram. It was somewhat idiotic that once there Vicki had to reconfirm the tree when the ropes used to bind Ange were still there.

It just occurred to me that the exorcism should have left a good girl Angelique, having driven out the demons. So, are we to assume that Ange had no goodness in her at all and that once the demons were driven out there was no Angelique left? Talk about the ultimate badgirl. She must have been born evil to have disappeared during an exorcism.

Aw, gee, dom!  [ghost_wink] Thanks! They were lucky to get HAA, and Nicholas would be the role of a lifetime for any actor.

I wonder if there is a certain type of actor represented by Astredo... a Spanish-descended English-speaking sort of actor with a strong, intimidating, menacing, worldly presence.  I say this because of Roger Delgado's portrayal of the Master in early 70s Doctor Who.  These two actors could have handled each other's roles perfectly.

I love Humbert Allen Astredo, and the 1968 Nicholas is my all time favorite Astredo performance.

dom, I always thought that Cassandra was returned to Hell as a result of Trask's incantations (ridiculous though the idea seems on paper) because she had no actual mortal existence in 1968.  She was a displaced spirit who had a "body" that existed as a result of Witchcraft.  How or why the antics of a ghostly Elmer Gantry type could have any effect whatsoever in casting out such a powerful spirit whose magic, as she frequently told us, "came from the Devil himself," is never made clear.  My own glint of an idea is that because Trask came from the same era when Angelique (in the ORIGINAL storyline, not the subsequent revisions) had her mortal existence, that fact gave him the power to return her spirit to the darkness from which it had come.

I'll really have to re-watch to spot the pornographic antics between Roger Davis and Joel Crothers you mention...

So pleased you are enjoying Humbert and Nicholas!  He's a strong part of why 1968 is my forever personal favorite storyline.

G.

Magnus, I should have guessed you'd also be a fan of Delgado!   [ghost_grin] He was the best Whovian adversary ever.
