A real Barnabas
« on: May 06, 2013, 06:53:47 AM »
The New York times the other day had a review of a concert by the American Symphony Orchestra which featured works by little known Hungarian composers.  There was a violin concerto played by a Hungarian violinist, named Barnabás Kelemen (an accent on the last a).  Even though it wasn't the case in DS, one generally associates vampires with that part of the world, so it was particularly intriguing that Barnabas is from Hungary.  I looked him up and he seems to be having an impressive career.

So, maybe Barnabas isn't a name the Anglo-Saxon Collinses really would have chosen.

It'a definitely the sort of name the Collinses would have chosen.  On the New England side of my family, I'm descended from a Barnabas, and I've got seven other Barnabases that I know of scattered through my family tree - stuff like "1st cousin 7 times removed".

I watched a couple of videos of Barnabas (drat, can't seem to copy the accent in) Kelemen playing Mozart.  Very pretty, except he kept opening his mouth.

Actually, it was going to require a bit more ingenuity than that, because of a peculiarity of my computer, but thanks, Midnite.

Lydia, how amazing that you're a DS fan and actually have all of those Barnabases in your family!!  I don't recall you ever mentioning that before.

Josette, the numbers are increased by the fact that little Barnabas Bryant died in 1715 at the age of five, so his parents recycled the name for their next male child.  I wonder how many Sarahs Joshua and Naomi went through before they got one who made it past infancy.
