DS in 16x9
« on: January 27, 2012, 02:33:14 AM »
I'm curious to hear from others on our board if they "zoom" DS to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio on their HD, 16x9 TVs?  I find that I see about 98% all of the important action and close-ups when I do this, and, because of up-converting, the show looks great for a 45 year old videotaped soap.  Anybody else care to share?

Sounds like mega bytes I can draw from.
I get a kick out of these guys who think they're so clean, when all the time they're trying to cover up their dirt.

I just widen it (have my dvd player set to 4:3 letterbox) so it fills the entire screen (42 inch).  But i discovered while watching Reba dvds, that if i 16:9, the 4:3 aspect enlarges to a nice size.  But i don't think that D.S. is anomorphic, so i fear i will have long and narrow figures in the picture.  I will get back to you when I watch again!

is this what you are talking about?  the cinematic aspects are too large for the screen and crop off parts of the picture.

I have to agree with Darren. But then given the things I've said in the past, I suppose that's not a surprise. I mean, I've been known to rail against even the idea of fastforwarding through even one second of an ep, much less actually doing it.  [snow_wink]  Not a second of DS should ever go unwatched (yes, even the characters you may not like) because it all contributes to the whole - and not a pixel of the show's image should be sacrificed.  [snow_smiley]

Aw, come on, Darren and MB.  I've seen DS in its original aspect ratio, i.e. the 1966-1971 videotape ratio of 1:33:1 since watching the show in its original run...and in sydication in the early 80s, and on MPI's videotapes from 1989...and finally on the DVDs.  Please, allow me to indulge in the modern technology that allows me to watch the show in 1:78:1 ratio on my HD TV. LOL

Doesn't blowing it up and stretching it out to that degree give you a headache?  (I'm serious, not intending to be sarcastic.)

No, it enhances my watching experience.   At least for me.  some people don't like it.
