The only thing that might have kept Roger from getting his ass kicked on a regular basis would have been the workers' respect and/or fear of Elizabeth.

(I'd go with fear of Liz!  )

That's a toss up.  The residents of Collinsport and the cannery workers may very well have been frightened of Elizabeth and her power but I think that she was generally well respected in the community. Roger, on the other hand, was barely tolerated.
