In case the ISP or whatever it's called looks different
than my usual it's because my electricity is STILL out and I'm posting from my sister's computer!
Last Tuesday the Ice Storm Of The Century hit my hometown, Kansas City, and as of 2pm Wednesday I have been without electricity, which includes furnace, TV and arrggghh, computer! Things are looking bleak as far as restoring power soon since the fixtures (meter, wires etc. ) were ripped from the side of the house and a Master Electrician needs to install new fixtures before they can feed current to our line. This coming weekend will be the soonest they might restore our power. Wednesday of last week until Sunday we made due for heat with a kerosene heater. When I absolutely had to go back to work this weekend my hubby bought a generator Sunday so we could have heat, fridge, lights and YAY TV! Unfortunately we have to turn the generator off when we leave the house so taping DS today was not an option. But I saw Buffy reruns on FX this am! I gotta say though, we are more fortunate than most. Many families are still at shelters. Some had trees go through their roofs into their houses. The damage is so widespread throughout town I heard that the city applied for Federal Assitance. Crews from Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Western Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas have come here to help. Trees started falling Tuesday night and were still falling on Saturday due to weight from the ice and high winds. There was no mail on Thursday to keep the mail carriers safe from falling trees and power lines. The death toll was very low, Thank God. Most fatalities were from people bringing generators and gas grills into their homes for heat and dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. Citizens have been great helping those without power. I feel luckier than most since there is no real damage to our house. We lost 4 trees in the back yard, but our front trees, sycamores, seemed to handle the ice with great elasticity. They bent but only lost a few small branches. It's been cold and real tested the creativity of both my husband and myself as far as keeping warm and having light to see by. At night our front room looked like the Old House with all the candles! The dogs seem to think this is a real adventure, except the first two nights when the sounds of exploding transformers, crashing trees and falling ice scared them a bit. The neighborhood looked like a war zone Thursday and friday mornings and still is a mess despite people neatly piling limbs on the curbs. Schools are still without power in some communties. It's been quite a ride and I can't wait to get back to life as usual. I'm doing laundry at my sister's and can't wait to wash my hair in NORMAL light and blow dry my hair! Well gonna check the laundry and get more internet fixes! Will check in later when I have MY computer up and running!
Always, Minja
Still going into dark rooms and flipping the light switch as IF I had power! Arrrggghhh!
