PROS AND CONS OF 1897

This is one of my favorite storylines. However,  it is very long. I like many of the new characters- Quentin, Petofi, Magda, Aristede, Lady Kitty, and Garth Blackwood to name a few and a familiar face like Angelique showing us a different side.  Please share your comments.

Love 1897 David Selby is great and has such charisma
and charm. I also liked Beth,Judith, Carl Magda,Tim shaw,Jamison,Nora
Petofi is great as the evil one this time and Aristede great as his henchman.
hated Gregory Trask(the worst of the Trasks (IMHO)
Evan,AMANDA HARRIS, also hated Charles D. Tate for no other reason than he created her,Charity Trask until she turned into Pansy Faye
now i didn't like Kitty that much!Hated LAURA but found Dirk amusing esp as a vamp.
felt sorry for Rachel!
I did like when angelique turned and became allies with Julia!

Im looking forward to this storyline coming up, [thumb]especially after this last one.  I've always loved when they go back into the past and next to 1795, this one is my favorite!  I especially love the costumes of that era and at least being able to see some new outfits for a change.
I also love seeing the intoduction of some new faces as well, such as Quentin,(I know Annie will be happy!) and also seeing Beth, Magda, (gotta love her) Count Petofi, Crazy Jenny,[spin] and of course Angelique again!
Oh, and who can forget PANSY FAYE??!! What a character![beer]

Like Jennifer, I just can't stand Laura[egypt]  or Trask but I guess you gotta take the good with the bad!

The Charity Trask/Pansy Faye character is my favorite of the ones portrayed by Nancy Barrett.
Actually, I liked the confrontation scene between Laura and Angelique. It would of been nice to see more of that action between the two supernatural characters.

I have to say that the Gregory Trask, Judith Collins part of the storyline is one of my favorites.  I was glad that Jerry Lacy got a much more complex character with many dimensions to play in this period. I was a little tired of the fire & brimstone Rev. Trask role.

I never understood the Quentin & Angelique angle.  Was she so desperate to become a family member and gain some respectability that she would marry a man she didn't love?  After all, Quentin didn't have power or money since Judith had it all.

The whole 1895 storyline overall is terrific with Beth, Jenny, Petofi, et al.

I have mixed feelings about 1897.  Part of it is excellent, taut storylines, interesting complex characters, some really good performances.  Part of it, you get the feeling that the writers had given up even trying to outline and were pretty much writing it day by day; it shows and it sucks.

The sibling rivalry/who did Edith leave the $$$ to?, Magda and Sandor, Trask and Judith, Quentin, Jenny, Beth, even a bit of Laura--all these are characters and elements that work so very well.  

I think Joan Bennett possibly did some of her finest work as Judith and she plays beautifully against Jerry Lacy's Trask and David Selby.  For anyone who thinks that the Reverend Trask is the same as Gregory Trask, well, they need to watch and compare the two again, because Lacy shines as Trask.  

In the latter half of the storyline when I'm wishing to hell they would just end it, there are still great moments.  KLS as Kitty, Lady Hampshire (she would only be Lady Kitty if she was the daughter of a duke or an earl--she married into her title) does some of her best work.  I really wish they would not have morphed her into yet another SYT because she was interesting to watch.  Then we have the Petofi character,  who while he's just kind of disgusting to me, gives us one great performance from Thayer David.

And of course, there's Quentin.

What I don't like?  Well, as I said, there's a point when they jumped the shark and you can tell.  TPTB had no clue WTF they were doing.  Characters lose motivations, plots make no sense.  They had written themselves into one big hole and had no idea how to get out.  Garth (sorry VAM), I don't get.  Why is he there?  Why should I care that he is?  The Quentin/Angelique thing made no sense to me.  It didn't work in terms of her character, which up until that point had been relatively consistent.

I like the Charity/Pansy angle a lot, but I think they went too far with it and didn't know how to come back.  Amanda?  WTF?  This was during the "let's match Quentin with every female character under forty and see if our ratings jump" period.  Rachel comes from the early 1897 period, but she's positively annoying to me.  The character was written atrociously; there is no sense/or thought behind any of her actions and it's all godawful.   Roger Davis also has entirely too much to do during this plot.

Thank you.  I'm glad you're enjoying it  Unfortunately, I'm sort of at a writer's block point with it.  Since I'm in my last semester of graduate school, it's been on the backburner for me, but hopefully when the 1897 arc airs, I'll be inspired and have some new chapters up.

And VAM--I ain't worried if he's after me or not I've survived one legendarily tough library school professor; Garth-boy doesn't scare me.

Jerry Lacy is in his self rightous element as Trask, as is Clarice as Minerva.

Grayson as Magda totally rocks!

The clash of the uber evil women Laura and Angelique is a gem too.

And we get to sing along with Pansy, "I wanna dance for you"!

And one can't forget the one hit wonder Julianka!  And some great performances from King Johnny!!!

Can't leave out Terry Crawford's Beth! She really lights up the storyline from her kissing chemistry with Quentin to her devoted care of Crazy Jenny, she is wonderful!

Now, isn't this when writer Violet Welles makes her debut!!!  She does an AWESOME job.  For those seeing this storyline for the first time, you're in for a real treat!

At the 2001 Halloweenathon at Tarrytown, Terry Crawford and Marie Wallace reprised their roles as Beth and Crazy Jenny and were totally awesome!  Watching them was as if I was watching the storyline for the first time again! They were so in character and dead on perfect! With them doing it live and just a few feet from me, I felt I was part of the action, which totally magnified the enjoyment!  Made me even more happy I attended the Halloweenathon last year! Wish I could astral project myself there this year!

Great for you, Luciaphil!  I've been there, done that, and I have never regretted the years spent going to UGA.  I didn't get a public library degree, but chose to get a teaching certificate, and then a Master's in Educational Media and Librarianship and a Six year in Instructional Technology.  Then I applied what I had learned for the next twenty years in elementary school. Even though I am retired, I still go back and substitute for media specialists on long time maternity leave.  I love the school library!!!!  Good for you!

Yes! You're right VAM!  How could I have forgotten that one?  It was great to see these two acting it out! The only time I actually liked seeing Laura was when she had scenes with Angelique.  May the best "witch" win!! :-)
