*** 2009 DARK SHADOWS FESTIVAL – REPORT

Over the Aug. 14-16 weekend, over 1200 fans from across the U.S., Canada, and Europe came to the Newark Airport Renaissance Hotel in Elizabeth, NJ for the DS Resurrected convention.

SG Online Updates to the ShadowGram YahooGroup and published complete issues of the ShadowGram Official DS Newsletters premiere-announced and updated guests, programming, and special features for the convention. Exclusive, behind-the-scenes photos and more details will be featured in the next published SG newsletter, SG #117.

Our guests were DS actors Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins), John Karlen (Willie Loomis), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), Lara Parker (Angelique), Jerry Lacy (Reverend Trask) and Marie Wallace (Eve). They participated onstage in audience Q&A sessions and shared anecdotes/reminscences while hosting video clip screenings.

The Sun. evening banquet was fully sold out with 550+ fans, each receiving a commemorative Barnabas photo personally autographed by Jonathan. There were door prizes and a video tribute to DS’ lasting popularity. Many items from Jonathan’s own career and personal collection – scrapbooks, original contracts, stage performance momentos, publicity materials and more – were offered in live and silent auction. Jonathan autographed these items for each winning bidder. Rare authentic DS items also were auctioned. The Fest benefited the Mary Health nursing home in California and the Society of Singers, an organization that helps singers in crisis.

Lara, John, Kathryn, Marie, and Jerry generously signed autographs, posed for photos, and chatted with attendees throughout the weekend. Actress Donna Wandrey (Roxanne Drew) sent her regrets that she was unable attend.

Jonathan honored 2 of the original “stage door fans,” Elena Nacanther and Valerie. They were among the fans who gathered at the ABC studio in NYC as the actors entered and left during the days of filming (1967-71). They spoke of their experiences, the fans’ comraderie, and helping to sort the massive amounts of fan mail Jonathan received during DS’ heyday. In acknowledging these 2 ladies, Jonathan also saluted all fans, then and now.

In addition, Jonathan performed several dramatic and humorous readings, capturing the audience with his interpretations of characters, settings, and mood using only his voice, gestures, and the written words themselves.

Recent SG print issues and Online Updates explained Jonathan’s “The Game.” This spring, he invited fans to visit his official website – www.jonathanfrid.com – to vote for their favorite DS scenes. Jonathan hosted these as they screened in random order. He then identified  their #10-#1 rankings. He says: “’The Game –Your Favourite Dark Shadows scenes were played for you and all of your fellow DS friends.” With permission, SG presents the result here..

SG thanks everyone who joined us in Newark. Special thanks go to all the volunteers and our Volunteer Coordinator Nina Johnson, for their wonderful help during the weekend. My thanks also to all of us on the Fest staff..We too are volunteers, working and assisting in many ways before, during, and after the Fest, on our own time and at our own expense.

Many fans participated in the Costume/Presentation Gala, the traditional for-fun event saluting fan creativity (not a contest or talent show). Dressed in their own unique costumes as various DS/horror/historical characters, entries included 15-month-old Isabel Fagan and a variety of striking individual and group musical performances and recitations. Thanks to all who stepped onstage to share with us! The Collinsport Players presented a separate skit merging DS with "Bewitched,” with a guest appearance by Lara Parker as Angelique. An open discussion covering a variety of DS-related subjects was led by Marcy Robin. Offering explanations and answering audience questions, Marcy detailed and clarified DS news, the status of the Johnny Depp-Tim Burton movie, cast/crew members’ careers, DS facts and projects, and more.
