"qui estes-vous,polly maggoo?" at the met
« on: July 11, 2009, 03:17:02 PM »
in an ongoing series of films in conjunction with the exhibition "the model as muse" the costume institute at the metropolitan museum of art will be screening "qui estes-vous,polly maggoo?" on friday july 17th at 5:30 pm.

it features of course our beloved doctor hoffman a.k.a grayson hall.i've never seen it and can't wait.

there will be a pre-screening discussion with harold koda(the institute's director),kohlee yohannan and dorothy mcgowen(the film's star).

last night they screened "funny face" with a discussion by legendary model carmen dell'orifice.it's a nice show if you like that sort of thing.

Wow.  I'd love to hear anything you can report about what Dorothy MacGowan says.  If there is a q & a and you feel moved to do so, I would love to have you ask MacGowan what her memories were of working with Grayson.

Just so you know, Grayson is in the very beginning of the movie, and then there's about 45 minutes until her next scene.  A lot of the movie is a rambling pop-culture kind of filmic collage, sort of like the Beatles "Hard Day's Night" or "Darling" with Julie Christie or other films of the mid Sixties that had a certain Beat/Pop edge to them.

I'm more and more interested in this one.  It could be great, and even if it's bad it'll be interesting.

super sixties.quintessentially sixties.

works fabulously as a fashion montage.the plot not so much.i couldn't exactly tell you what it was about.almost surreal.

but grayson was sublime.she appears in two major scenes.one as a chanel-clad editrix at a fashion show and the other...in a turban, and harem pants, and sequined eye makeup, and enough jewelry to choke a horse...at her office.

but well worth a look just for the locations and art direction and fabulous "yellow submarine" credit sequence and of course la hall.

There's a rather dark, improperly framed (squished, actually) upload of the first six minutes or so of this film available now on Youtube:

You get to see Grayson's entrance--my favorite entrance of hers in all of her films.  You can't see it due to the poor quality but when she sits down she is holding a packet of Marlboros in her lap.

Frustratingly, there is a clip from the Japanese DVD which is in flawless quality but none of Grayson's scenes seem to have made it.
