Why was DS saved?
« on: April 10, 2009, 05:56:56 AM »
I have been spending a lot of time on WIKIPEDIA.   I am a knowledge freak and love to read about things.  I was looking up The Edge of Night (I always thought this would have been a fun soap to watch!) :) the other day and it was reported that a lot of the episodes were WIPED or RECORDED over.  There was somewhat like 7k episodes that show had produced.  Fortunately some were saved and available for syndication. Over the years I hadn't heard why DS was saved. Does anyone know?

OT: Which leads me to grip why there is a SOAPNET if your not gonna re air old soaps.  I think they would do much better.  They could steal air the day for night, and add some old soaps to there repertoire!

Thanks Cousins!

Perhaps it was because Dan Curtis thought so highly of himself he saved them? Or if it didn't own them outright, maybe bought them? Lucky for us, if this is the case, he was a bit egocentric.

Sorry for taking up space...I knew nothing about this. I don't remember reading that review back in 2008. TRUST ME though I know (now) it was ABC and it's in head forever!  If you want to delete this thread that is fine since it's probably taking up valuable space!  Thanks again! [easter_kiss]

Ok, back to the original question.  Does anyone know why ABC saved the tapes?  [ghost_smiley]

That is a good one, because like I said they did a lot of WIPING and taping over in those days...as I pointed out about The Edge of Night! I do recall on GH's 40 anniversary they showed a clip of Audrey from the first episode, so maybe they saved that one because it was the first.  However, I have heard all all of GH's have been saved and I know the 70's LUKE N LAURA episodes are still around because the wedding and several episodes leading up to it were aired on SOAPNET!

General Hospital only exists in BW kinescope for ...

As to DS, syndication was the main reason for saving ...

Does the GH kinescope just go up to a certain point because the Luke and Laura episodes were in vivid color! :) Kudos to Abc for having faith in DS syndication!

I didn't quote the entire post that's linked, but I'm positive you'll find Charles' answer to your question there.
