What was the object in Gerard Stiles hand when he would stare into the fire and attempt to cast a spell?

It was some sort of talisman, I'm pretty sure. It bears a striking resemblance to the Sun Wheel, the Celtic cross and the symbol for Earth.

Thanks... I only knew of its meaning Earth in astronomy.   Apparently some more of that Christian anti-pagan propaganda is involved.
