OT -- Episode of Strange Paradise from 1969
« on: January 28, 2008, 10:48:48 PM »
Greetings, fans,

For those who've been curious to see an episode for the Canadian-produced "answer" to Dark Shadows, a complete show (originally produced and aired in the US in December of 1969) is now available on YouTube.  Here's the link for part one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbHcrMyZyI8

Despite all the negative comments on this, I personally think this is a great episode of a fabulous series!  I'm afraid most of the people who criticize this have not a concept what 1960s daytime television entailed in terms of production, logistics, etc.

cheers, Gothick

LOL! Gothick! Thanks so much for the link! I'd only ever heard about this series, never seen it. What a riot! I never thought there might be another gothic soap out there, if possible, campier than our beloved DS. I loved the clips. I was kind of surprised! They actually showed BLOOD! The heroine? Holly, looked like a typical Hammer ingenue. Great stuff.

I contacted someone about getting bootleg copies on DVD as it's not available commercially. I'll let anyone interested know if I hear back. If this is not kosher, mods please delete this section of the post.

Strange Paradise is a whole lot of fun to watch.  I much prefer DS, but Strange Paradise is a great "chaser."

I saw the first ep. of SP on first airing.  I don't think I stuck with it.... wait, I think they changed direction at some point, right? ... and I may not have liked the change...

And arashi, I am crestfallen that you're in the "camp" camp as regards DS.... though I can't really deny it for the 1968 storyline.    I get fed up with "camp" pretty fast.   It's like ODing on sugar or something.

Cheer up Magnus! I don't enjoy DS because of or for the camp. I'm in it for the ghost, vampire, witch, hell beast, what have you story lines. I love the spooky stuff.

Strange Paradise on the other hand, I would watch PURELY for the camp!

A Canadian bargain basement Dark Shadows knockoff? Hell yes.

It almost has the feel of a 60's/70's low-budget European gothic shot through the lens of serialized broadcast television. I wonder if it's the French influence.

I need all 195 episodes ASAP.

One of my all time favorite moments on Strange Paradise that has a weird relationship to the culture of these boards is this week when a spirit winds up trapped in the body of a black rabbit.

Cosette Lee is magnificent bellowing to her terrified hubby Quito:  "Quito!  You must find that rabbit!  It is EEE-vil!  And when you find it--you know what you must do!  CRUSH it!  Kill, Quito!  KILL!"

This snippet of dialogue would make a fabulous voicemail outgoing message, IMNSHO.

retzev---thanks.   If I'd known I'd have paid attention during those 3 years of manditory Spanish class.   I know only the numbers.

Oh yes.  That must be used for something.    I'd make it my signature, except that I don't know the series, and I really think I ought to, before throwing quotes around.

With French, I could a vague idea of what they're saying, if they slowed it down to 1/3 speed.   Italian, no.
