As for how the secret room ever remained secret, well, that's due to the perennially favorite soap phenomenon of selective memory. ALL soap characters conveniently forget or at least push to the backs of their minds things that no real person would ever forget.    And seemingly the more important it should have been for them to remember seems to make it the more likely they'll forget. 

If we include persons who were told about the secret room but never saw proof of it, then Burke, Joe and Carolyn would make the list.
