Frank Garner, Coffee Salesman

Long before Geico, there were cavemen in coffee ads.  ;) Check out this vintage Folger's instant coffee commercial featuring Conard Fowkes (Frank Garner) as Harvey.

Loved it . It was interesting the way that they related it to sex is interesting. They used to do it they way  a very long time ago.  The blowing out the candle. But kids might not think that I don't know if I would have then.

How funny!!  I wouldn't have known that's who he was on my own, but being aware of it first, it was obvious.

Thanks for the link!

(I recognize the actress playing his wife as someone who frequently guested on shows in the '60s - but for the life of me I can't place her name...)

I'm thinking it's E. J. Peaker, who was in Hello Dolly and did a lot of TV in the 70s too.

Midnite,
I believe you're right. I don't have computer speakers to hear her voice, but that face and those eyes... I'm pretty sure that's E.J.! Very good! E.J. Peaker! And I think she was on some ABC sitcom around the time DS was originally popular. She definitely popped up on "Love American Style" now and again.

I get a kick out of these guys who think they're so clean, when all the time they're trying to cover up their dirt.

I fear some might be missing a point in that ad: Conard's character wants you to make his coffee - he isn't ever going to make any coffee for you.  ;)  (If he wanted good coffee and he was at all willing to make it, he wouldn't be complaining about her coffee, he'd just make his own.) But if you're OK with that...

I think Harvey deserves a nice steaming hot cup of coffee -- poured slowly over the part of his anatomy that he thinks gives him license to act like such a jackass.

There, MB, is that closer to the response you were expecting?  ;D

Doesn't matter. I make the lousiest coffee in the country. If he wants to crab about my lousy coffee, let him. Woo hoo!

Thank you MsCriseyde...I had never been on UTube before (wasn't sure).

(I was hoping towards the end of the commercial, it would say something like, good coffee, laces with arsenic....)  ;D

Ah, but those were the "old" days, way before women's lib. Real men didn't make coffee -- LOL! As for us women, well, just look at how we were depicted -- sitting around the kitchen table, gabbing! Yeah, as if a homemaker really had that kind of time, especially if she had kids!

One does have to wonder, if some are willing to forgive Conard's Harvey simply because he's good looking and acting the way "real men" were supposed to, why doesn't PT Quentin get off as easily? Trust me - if a man is as belittling as Harvey over something as innocuous as coffee, irrational screaming and barking orders to "go to your room" really aren't far behind. And PT Quentin even had a whole closet full of psychologically traumatizing issues to deal with which caused most if not all of his bad behavior, which may not make that behavior completely forgivable, but at least it made it totally understandable. However, Harvey was simply acting the way "real men" were supposed to - which seems to me to be far less of a good excuse.  :-
