J Frid & Episode # 0229
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:55:17 AM »
I just finished re-watching episode #0229, in which Barnabas is talking to Ben Stokes and is in mourning for the death of Josette. Talk about a GREAT scene! It's one of the times Frid was just right on the mark. The scene is very Shakespearean-he rages, he mourns, he speaks from the heart...just a fantastic job! I was mesmerized, and it reminded me yet again why DS is so enduring. If you haven't seen it for awhile, check it out--it's worth the time!

I know that scene well. Just wait what happens next ... One thing that is truly remarkable about 1795 is how Frid was able to express these powerful emotions and a gothic-type sensibility without appearing silly or overly theatrical, and it holds true today. I've often stated on this board that TV will probably never see the likes of it again. DS/1795 was a minor TV romantic fable classic and Frid rightly deserves a large chunk of that credit. He outdid himself and I don't care how many lines he flubbed throughout the series, Frid could soar.

My tapes end right after BC is bitten.  But recently i got tape #39, four tapes later, and noticed how (to an uninformed person like me) Shakespearian and intense and darkly romantic it all gets.    I'm missing a peak in the writing I think.    If even Millicent gets good intelligent scenes, after her disillusionment, then things must really take off in this period.

That's what I thought.  I mean the writing was intelligent, not Millicent necessarily.   From what little I saw, she seemed to be growing up while apparently getting suicidal.   Nice mood to the bits with her and Joshua/Naomi, then with Ben in the crypt.    Sort of atmospheric and almost a bit abstract.
