Current Talk '06 I / Re: Sci-Fi Channel Documentary
« on: February 10, 2006, 02:18:04 AM »
The one Mfmdpt is referring to is a different doc., though one I haven't seen.

They made two shows- one focusing on the fans ala: Trekkies for DS fans, and the other was a 'behind the scenes on the phenomenon' show.

OK - now I'm getting confused. The show I was referring to was the Sciography program that was shown during the 2002 banquet. Wasn't the documentary that contained your restoration segment and my Seaview segment the Sciography program? I thought the program about the DS fans was called Sci-Luv and that was the one that was shown on Friday at the 2002 Fest? I haven't seen either. I've only gotten reports from friends who saw them. And that's been more than enough.  ::)

The second time, it really felt like they were trying to get as many 'edgy' and controversial comments as possible. In fact, several times, I felt they were trying to steer me into a kind of performance which I now realize was meant to put Dan Curtis in a bad light and make me come off like an obsessed loser. I have a feeling they were going to use that latter kind of material in the other 'Trekkies-'-esque doc.

I agree. My experience was that executive producer Andy Schatzberg, who conducted the questioning off camera from an actual script that he'd written, certainly tried his best to steer me into a performance and that he was searching for edgy or even ludicrous comments. Or at least comments that would have made me look ludicrous. But I didn't let him get away with it.

At the time I think there was a making of classic series idea being worked on, and they dropped it after an episode or two.   A couple of new producers were brought in to supervise the program, do new interviews and steer it towards something more nasty and tabloid-oriented.

There was. The SciFi Channel aired a show about the original Battlestar Galactica, but a follow-up about Babylon 5 got shelved.  As I recall it, Schatzberg wasn't involved in the Battlestar Galactica show, though I could swear he'd said he had been in the one about Babylon 5. But he definitely said that the DS Sciography program was intended as a pilot for a new series on SciFi. Obviously that series never manifested, which is defintely for the best.

And if the stories Schatzberg told me about how they had ambushed Anne Rice with the 1970PT tape and how they intended to reference the von Bulow incident are any indications, I'd say "nasty and tabloid-oriented" was definitely a part of their mission statement for the show.  [sad3]

It was a nasty piece of junk...

Exactly my feeling.

and I wish all that footage from my session was trashed, though since the master tapes were retained by the third party production company, I'm sure they still exist.

OMG - do you mean footage of my rant might really still exist? If only that could show up somewhere someday. Not because of my part in it, but because his responses to me that would be heard off camera would leave little doubt as to what Schatzberg was mostly about.  ::)

I think it's safe to say that that thing ain't seein' the light of day!

As someone who took part it, I hope they burned every copy, every outtake, and anything and everything having to do with it.  >:(  However, that being said, the outtake footage from the questions I refused to answer and what I told them I thought about those questions might be pretty funny to see.  [laughing11]  But something tells me they definitely destroyed that stuff.  ;)

Just from seeing how meticulously thought out his wonderful DS promos are ([thumb]), something tells me DStoDA already has a perfect plan in mind to decide which actors he'll place in each category. But just by way of an example, back in the late 90s when AOL's now defunct DARK SHADOWS ONLINE held its DS version of The Oscars (The Brandies [wink2]), we used the same type of decision making procedure as the real Oscars. We held a preliminary voting round, and then the top three vote getters in each of our categories went on to the final vote (with the final results announced by our lovely online hostess, Diana Millay).

Current Talk '24 I / Re:WB ORDERS FILMING OF NEW DS PILOT
« on: May 07, 2004, 02:04:17 AM »
Are you trying to imply that you're not decent, Darren? That might work on some people, but I already know that you are. So, too late, your fate is sealed.  :D

I'm not trying to spread more rumors but a friend who has been monitoring some of the discussions on one of the WB talk forums mentioned to me that a person who posts there and who appears to have some sort of plausible connections to the WB said that the WB just viewed the pilot yesterday. They went on to say that unless it was godawful, which they sincerely doubt, there's probably no way that an announcement would have been made today that the show was rejected.

Unfortuantely, my friend didn't provide the URL for the forum or the specific post or else I would post it. But maybe someone else who knows more about the WB's site can find it.

i actually found a short version of this song with her

Thanks for posting the link to the video. I'm a member of that site and I didn't even think to do it.  [6184]  It's too bad they didn't use some of the parts that show her better, but the point was to show off Depeche Mode, not Lysette.  ;)

Maybe I can put togther something for the Members' Archive after it reopens.

My, Lysette Anthony certainly did have a lot of ... talent, didn't she?  The new Angelique is going to have quite the bustier to, erm, fill.

:D

Does that disc contain "Never Let Me Down"?  I doubt you would know this, but that song was considered quite the anthem in gay discos, back in the day.  My friends were convinced the song's lyrics referred to the singer's best friend who doubled as his playmate between the sheets.  There were some lines in that song we never could quite decipher, but they sounded VERY naughty.

Because this is a DS and not a DM forum I'll try to keep this as brief as possible. :)

"Never Let Me Down Again" is one of my favorite songs, the lyrics are included with the CD ("Music for The Masses"), and I can't say I've found them to be "naughty" in any particular way - gay, straight, or otherwise. Most of the songs on that CD deal with some sort of surrender. That single is about a guy's enjoyment of spending time with his best friend because they always have a great time together (the "let down" isn't a disappointment - the song is a plea to his friend to never let their feeling of "flying high" end or to put his "feet back down on the ground". I might see how a bunch of horny gay 20-somethings might be willing to read into that, but the video is just about a simple car ride. On the other hand, another one of the singles from the CD, "Behind The Wheel," uses the metaphor of a car ride in a blatantly sexual way because it's about a guy's willingness to let his girlfriend take, uh, control of the "wheel."  [wink2]

Now if you want really "naughty," you should check out DM's video for "Personal Jesus" (from the "Violator" CD and a precursor to their "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" CD, which contains "I Feel You"), which has the four DM members with four prostitutes in a bothel in a old west town, singing lines like "Take second best/Put me to the test/ Things on your chest/You need to confess/I will deliver/You know I'm a forgiver/Reach out and touch faith". But some of DM's best songs deal with religion or sex, and "Personal Jesus" just happens to be one of the many to combine both, and that combination inevitably turns out to be their greatest stuff.

End of DM ramblings. -- Well, except to say that I've wrestled with using the line from "Strangelove" (also from "Music For The Masses") that I chose for my sig or a similar version that comes later in the song: "I give in to sin because I like to practice what I preach," which more than a few people who know me think is much more appropriate!  [lghy]

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / Depeche Mode Meets Angelique
« on: March 12, 2004, 09:02:51 AM »
Yes, it's been a while since I've posted. But I'm never really far away.  ;)

What prompted my return to the land of the posting rather than the land of the lurking was that I bought a DVD tonight. I guess it's obvious from my sig that I'm a Depeche Mode fan (shame on you if you don't know who they are!) and I finally got around to buying their "Videos 86>98+" DVD. And what did I find on it? Well apparently I managed to miss one of their 1993 videos because it features none other than the '91 series' Angelique, Lysette Anthony. (And shame on SG for never having mentioned her appearance! >:()

Say what you will about her French accent (that's right, I'm talking about you, Gothick [wink2]), but the raw sexuality that she displayed as Angelique was obviously no fluke because it's on display in all its full glory in Depeche Mode's video for "I Feel You". Between the song's driving beat, the group's lead singer's pelvic thrusts and general gyrations (Mick Jagger has nothing on him) and Anthony, this is one hot video. And I figured some of you might get a kick (yeah, that's the word [b003]) out of seeing a few screen captures from it. Enjoy! ;D

Are you saying Midnight that no matter how much the fans complain and write letters about changes to the DS Fest, it won't matter a hill of beans?

Most likely a conflict arose with the original dates and Labor Day Weekend was the best compromise they could work out. I'd say it's probably unlikely the date could or would be changed again. Of course that doesn't stop anyone from expressing their opinion that they'd prefer not to have a Fest held that weekend again. [wink2] But as someone else has said, do it politely. Anyone who works themselves up into a fit of anger won't really accomplish much or do anyone any good, especially themselves. ;)

A day trip by bus from Brooklyn to Newport and back?  Not for the faint of heart, or kidneys, methinks.

Uh, no. It's a four to five hour trip (depending on traffic) in both directions.

I wonder why the dates have been changed -- and to a holiday weekend.

Actually, there is precedent for holding the Fest that weekend. The 1987 NY Fest was held August 28, 29 & 30 and the 1989 NY Fest (the first one I attended) was held September 2 & 3 (with a party at the site of the former DS studio on the September 1 and a bus trip to Newport on Labor Day itself, September 4). However I can understand why many people might have problems with Labor Day Weekend. ;) And those Fests were held at the World Trade Center Marriott (sigh), not in Brooklyn.

So, Lizzie's been gone for 4 weeks  ::)  Wow.....this is something.  No food, no water....if she wasn't dead to start with, I think she'd be there by now!!

The point of the spell was for Liz to suffer by appearing to be dead but to remain alive. Little realities like food or water wouldn't enter into it because the spell probably took care of that. ;)

Just imagine what it might have been like had Liz spent eternity like that! ::shudder::

Not wrong....the curse Magda recited in the cemetary specifically stated that she cursed "You, Quentin Collins, and ALL your male descendants".

Nancy, who knows 1897 chapter and verse, but is not all that sure she got a quote in the post right

Close enough (I think she said "kin"). :) However, I chose Julia's explanation over Magda's actual curse for two reasons:
The first was that when this topic came up on the original VN board, someone (I think it might have been Cassie Rademacher) provided a link to a Web site all about the Romano clan. Somewhere on the site (which I can't seem to locate on my own -- damn VN for losing all those great posts!) it was explained how the Romano tribe considered (considers?) the eldest son to be THE male descendant and any other sons were (are?) insignificant also rans (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist). So, the information on that site cast considerable doubt as to whether Magda's curse would have affected any but the oldest son in succeeding generations.
And the second was that the curses on DS seem like they can't always be interpreted literally. Take Angelique's curse on Barnabas, for example. She stated that anyone who loves Banabas will die. However, Julia, who clearly loves Barnabas in every time period/band they travelled to, never became a victim of the curse. And then there's Joshua. While it's true that Joshua said he may not have showed his love to Barnabas, his actions during the end of the 1795/96 storyline clearly showed that Joshua did indeed love his son. So, by virtue of that fact, he should have become the curse's victim, too - yet he didn't.

the reason will be in the 1897 episodes but i always thought it was because Chris was the older son!others have told me i was wrong a DS mystery

Well, whoever told you that you were wrong in thinking it's because Chris is the oldest son were the ones who are wrong, jennifer. ;) If they were online and they gave you a hard time, the next time you come across them, you should give them a cyber-slap. ;D

Julia clears up why Tom wasn't a werewolf. During the Leviathans storyline, when she explains to Chris that he's related to Quentin, she also explains that the werewolf curse started with Quentin and was intended to go to the eldest son in each succeeding generation.
(And though he could have been the older twin, it's also possible that this explanation could be used as evidence that Chris was only Tom's older brother and not actually his twin. [wink2])

Still waiting to hear him described as Tom Jennings "twin" though ... ;D

You'll be waiting forever, Vlad, because it's never once said or even hinted that Tom and Chris were twins.

The idea that Tom and Chris were twins is an often heatedly contested notion. For instance, some fans have insisted that in the scenes where Chris first introduced himself to Joe and Julia it was mentioned that Chris was Tom's twin. But it seems that our minds can often play tricks on us because as we saw on Thursday when episode #627 ran on Sci-Fi, at no point does anyone refer to Chris and Tom as being twins - only brothers. Actually, there's no point during the series in which anyone ever uses the words "twin" or "twins" to describe Tom and Chris. That idea probably stems from the fact that Don Briscoe played both roles.
