Current Talk '03 I / Re:Brian Sturdivant
« on: May 11, 2003, 09:55:52 PM »
Contains spoiler...

I thought it was odd that there was so much build up to Claude North and they killed him off so fast!  Usually when a character has a long build up they are usually meant for the long term.

Too bad in real time, they didn't use Brian Sturdivant as Gerard Stiles ghost in the summer of 1970.   This is nothing against James Storm, who was good on his own.

Art Wallace's bible had the stories chronologically as follows:

Note:  There is no Matthew Morgan, Mrs. Johnson, or Sheriff Patterson in this bible.  Joe Haskell's mother is Liz's part time house cleaner.

1. Rogers Car Accident- played out on the show as it did here.

2. Burkes Search for the Truth on Roger- After sometime on searching for clues to the manslaughter mystery, Vicky learns that Roger did run down the man 10 years earlier and had Sam help frame Burke for the crime. Roger, learning Vicky knows the truth tries to shove her off Widows Hill, but David rushes up and throws Roger over the cliff to his death, saving Vicky.

3. The Blackmailing of Elizabeth- Walt Cummings, Paul Stoddards friend arrives in town and blakmails Liz about her killing Paul and their burying him in the basement, eventually convincing her to marry him.  Bill Malloy tries to help Liz in fighting Walt. Liz confesses at her wedding and Walt reveals Paul is alive. The Constable orders Walt to leave town after Liz refuses to press charges.  Liz then goes into a tirade, throwing things and smashing objects all over the place for spending 18 years in the house for nothing.

4. Laura Robin Collins Murder- after arriving in town, she is found dead and Vicky is the prime suspect and put on trial for Laura's murder.  Frank Garner represents her and she is eventually exonerated.  There is sort of a love triangle with Vicky/Frank/Burke.

5. The Return of Paul Stoddard- to escape the forces that pursue him.

There are few other hints at what was to come- Liz was to have a romance with Bill Malloy, Carolyn and Joe were to have a romance, David was to eventually overcome his bad ways as people learn how he was treated by his parents over the years.

There is also a mention of a fire in the west wing of Collinwood in 1895, shortly afterward Samuel Collins left suddenly for Paris and was never heard from again.

Current Talk '03 I / Paul Stoddard in Art Wallace's Original Bible
« on: May 02, 2003, 04:40:12 PM »
The last section of Art Wallace's DS bible (titled "Shadows on the Wall") had Paul Stoddard originally returning to Collinwood sometime after the Laura Collins storyline ended (she was to have originally been murdered with Vicky on trial as ner murderer).  Note: Roger was already killed off at this point.

Paul was to return to Collinwood to escape "the forces that pursue him."  There was no more explanation given.  Interesting that the writers did use this idea, though not what Art Wallace originally intended for him.

Current Talk '03 I / Dan Curtis' Alternative to Leviathan
« on: April 19, 2003, 04:53:25 PM »
Dan Curtis once said in an interview that he originally wanted to do a story about a mummy but decided against it.  He said all a mummy does is drag his leg and was not interesting.  The Leviathan story was the mummy's replacement.

Jonathan Frid said that he didn't want to play Barnabas Collins anymore, so they created Bramwell/1841 PT to accomodate him.

DC really depended on him to carry the ratings for the show.  If he knew DS was to be cancelled in April 1971, perhaps he could have let JF leave DS and after 1840 ends, return the show to 1971 and tie up looses ends for the next three months.

The writers had a golden opportunity for some real soap opera with the return of Paul Stoddard.  If they had allowed for that to be separate from the Leviathan plot, it may have been better off.

Current Talk '03 I / Leviathan Concordance
« on: April 11, 2003, 02:23:59 PM »
I know I have brought this up before, but now that we are into Leviathan, does anyone have any idea when the Levithan Concordance will be available?  it was supposed to come out in January.

Other shows that never recovered from a bad storyline:

Falcon Crest:  The Nazi plot (1984-1985)
Dynasty: The Moldavian massacre (1984-1985)
Dallas: Bobby's death being a dream (1985-1986)
Knots Landing: Trying to harvest energy from the sea. (1990-1991).

On another board, someone has the theory (though the writers never bring it up) that the Leviathans are using an image of Josette to take over Kitty and lure her and Barnabas to 1796 to start their domination plot.

Maybe Angelique, using her powers, resolved the bodies issue in 1840 as she did in 1897, off camera.

Remember that Edoth and Gabriel did have children away at school.  One of them still would have been the descendent of Liz and Roger.

It would have been interesting though, had the three returned to 1971 to be greeted by  "Arthur Collins" and his sister "Elysie Collins Stoddard"!

There was not just the doppelganger Angelique created....

Remember that there is also the 1969 body that disappeared, it had to have gone somewhere...most likely it was in a "limbo" state as Barnabas' 1969
soul self was inhabiting his 1897 body, suppressing his 1897 soul self.  Most likely, Angelique had to use some magic to reunite the bodies with their proper soul selves and had the 1897 Barnabas rechained in his coffin (all taking place off camera).  I think the 1969 Barnabas' body may have been weakened and Julia was giving him the much needed medication to bring it back to normal.

There were a lot of people that they didn't show in the In Memoriam section.  I remember they even showed Mary Jane Croft (from the Lucy Show) in this section of the Oscars a few years ago.

Current Talk '03 I / If There Was No Sam Hall on DS
« on: March 05, 2003, 04:50:04 PM »
Julia Hoffman was originally meant to be a short term character to eventually be killed by Barnabas.

If Sam Hall, Graysons husband, was never hired on DS as a writer, would Julia still have been so prominently featured as she was on the show?

What are your opinions?

Actually, when Roger married Cassandra, she told him Laura was not legally dead.  This is another pattern with the Collins men and Laura Collins.
