Current Talk '03 II / Re:Never without you, Julia!
« on: August 22, 2003, 04:10:43 AM »
I believe as time went on, beginning with the Adam storyline and growing there after, Barnbas became quite fond of Julia.  He realized what a good friend she was and all she had done to help him, even when he did not deserve that help.  I think it was a fondness that sort of slipped up on him.  At first she was just a doctor, which he claimed early on is all she could ever be to him.  Then she became a need alley.  Then as she did more for him, never exposing his secret, she became a trusted friend.  As she did more for him and took chances for him, like going back to 1897 to help him and coming to P T. to save his life, he began to realize and appreciate  that she was more than just a friend...she was his best friend.  I don't think he loved her in the romantic sense of the word, but he loved her as a very treasured person and special friend.  Their relationship was unusual and rare.  Despite the deeper feelings that Julia had for him which I don't think he shared for her,  they managed to not let that come between them and instead developed a bond stronger than even some people have in a romantic relationship.  They depended on one another on so many levels.  It was unlike any other relationship in any other soap I remember seeing.

There really is no explaination given about how Quenitn so suddenly became an important part of Collinwood.  How he was able to move into a section of the house closed off for almost 100 years or why Elizabeth would allow he or anyone else to live in that room.  However, during this segment, Louis Edmonds is absent from the whole 1970 time period, and the character of Quentin is used almost as Roger who have been used.  There is sudden closeness with Elizabeth and he is like her new right hand man.

One thing about Quentin's room in 1970 that I noticed the ohter day is that it is being lit by candles.  However in 1897 it was lit with gas lamps.  I found it interesting the gas lamps have now been changed to candles.

Haven't watched in sooo long, and 1995 is extremely good.

First...why is Q so afraid of G.S.?
Why is he telling Barn, "He's going to kill us all!", uh, hello, Quentin, you & Barn are already of the seriously dead variety.

Without giving away the plotline to others who may not have seen this seciton of the show before, Quentin's insanity is more based on his own guilt than his encounter with Gerald.

Willie is shipped off to Windcliff in the early part of set 4 of the DVD releases. That set covers the the last 7 weeks of 1967 and the first week of the 1795 storyline.

As others have said, it is a choice of personal preference for the storyline, but Vol 6 is a great set to watch to see why Barnabas is such a tortured soul and why his obsession with Josette is so strong.  In this volume you see him lose his sister Sarah, the death of Josette, her resurrection, his aunt Abligail discovering him and her finally getting her just reward, the death of Rev Trask and his father's discovery of Barnabas.  This set cover most of, but not all of, the later half of the 1795 storyline and by far is the most action packed set of the bunch.  There is a death or two on each DVD and you see Barnabas finally coming to grips with being a vampire and as he puts it to Abigail, giving in to the devil.

Current Talk '03 II / Re:DS DVD questions
« on: July 10, 2003, 06:04:23 AM »
Currently there are 6 volumes of 4 DVD's per volume available.  They run for Barnabas's arrival through the later portion of the 1795 flashback.  That is all that is available on DVD right now.  Every other month (with August being the next month) a new volume, containing 40 episodes will be released by MPI.  MPI is the only company authorized to produce the DS DVD'S, to answer another of your questions.

The regular price from MPI and most retail stores is 59.99.  Online and I'm sure in some other regular stores, they are available for less.  The suggested retail price is what MPI sells them for.   An online store like Amazon has them initially for $44.99 and even with shipping I get them for $50, which is still cheper than the regular price.  Other online places, do have them for a bit less and some stores may have it the same way.  I have never checked in stores for them.

The episodes are broken down, by episode number and date of telecast.  There are 10 per disc and you do have to be familiar with what episode is numbered what to easily find one, like you are talking about.  Right now, those watching PT storyline could follow along on VHS, but not DVD.  Those won't be out for sometime to come.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:DVD Set 5 flaw on disc 2?

I tend to get my pre-order from Amazon on the date of street release.  They will always claim it won't be shipped until the release date and will arrive 2 days later (I used 2 day shipping) but I usually get it sent out the day before street date and get it the next day.

Except for set 2 where I had a problem getting it, despite pre-ordering it, I have gotten it without a problem, but at that point I went from standard shipping to the 2 day shipping.

The glitch in question does not represent missing material.  That point should be made clear to the MPI representative.

The glitch in question is in the opening scene of the 10th episode on Disc # 2, which corresponds to the 5th episode of Volume 32 of the videos. It happens at some point before the opening credits role  Now I have that video and have checked it just now.  No glitch of any kind shows up in that scene on the video tape version.  It is completely clear of  defects, in both picture and sound.

Now another person has questioned if the glitch is not on the video copies then did it develope between the times of the Video releases and the DVD releases?  This seems like an interesting and valid question under the circumstances.   If it doesn't show up on the video releases and it does not,  but does on the DVD release, then what is the explanation?  Were the Video releases edited?  My understanding was that they were not.  If  not,  then what is the reason this glitch now appears on the DVD release of that episode but did not show up on the original video tape release of the same episode?  That is the question I would like answered and I think others would as well.

Now I am grateful to MPI for releasing DS in both forms, but in this situation, something just doesn't seem to be making sense here.  If the defect was on the master, it should show up on both the video and DVD's.  Other defects in other episodes do show up on both and I have no doubt they are on the master copy, but in this case the evidence doesn't seem to support this being the case.

I have not gotten to the disc you are talking about.  However, throughout most of the color episodes on VHS, there are times when the picture will cut to black for a moment and sometimes come back to a different point.  It is also possible this was a camera goof and if so it remained in since they did not edit.

I have seen some of the black points in earlier episodes come across on DVD as just a momentary bit of interference, that on VHS go completely black.

As for the spelling of Lyes, while I know that is not the way we spell it today, it could have been the old English spelling or it could have been done to reflect that alot of gravestone and records have misspelling on them and in them in that period.  People were not as literate as they are today in that era.

I assumed that David's room was below the tower room.  The windows in his room are similar in design and placement to his room being in the tower portion of the house.  The shape of the room also would lead you to believe that was in the tower portion of the house.  However, when they referred to the Tower, they usually referred to the Tower Room, meaning the top room in the tower and what was below it was never mentioned.

From the 1795 segment, we learn that what is David's room was to be Jeremiah's room and that it was the first door on the right at the top of the stairs.  If you say the stairs are in the center of the house, then yes that would put David's room below the Tower Room.

Frankly, because of major inconsistencies in the way the house is setup in the series and the real house, just looking at the exterior, I gave up ages ago trying to make the two make sense.  It is just not possible.  Given the location of the front door in relation to what they show as the drawing room windows (the one's with the lights one) it would be a fair walk down that wing and that is not the case.   So years ago, I took the same frame of mind I have about Gilligan's Island having all they have for a 3 hour cruise and decided to just take it on face value and not worry about it making sense in reality.

Bette, it sounds like the person who was working at Amazon, who couldn't get set #2 to me, has gone to work for CD Universe.  That was the same excuse that I got, even though other people had gotten shipments from Amazon at that time.  Since that time one time, I have gotten my sets by the day of the release, which I never used to have happen at all.  It was always a few days after the release date.

As for a corrected version, I wonder how long, if ever, that will happen.  There were known gltiches with the VHS versions, one volume in particular and to my knowledge that was never corrected, or if it was, it never made it mass distribution.

I believe you are right Raholt.  It does look very much similar to the parallel time room at Collinwood.  Im sure they re-use these sets over and over again anyway.

Deb

Yes, several of the sets were redressed and reused or did double duty.  The set for David's bedroom was also the tower room set.  The study set was Roger's bedroom set, but it both case the rooms were redressed to look some different.  Also portion of one set might show up as part of another, but this is really the first time I have seen a set used over again, as a different place, being so close to its original look. With the exception of the style of window used in the set for Angelique's house, the doors, the fireplace, the placement of the corriodors were all the same as the PT room.  My theory is that since this set was used so little in this storyline that they decided to get as much mileage out of it as they could so they added a new window and used it as the PT room in the East Wing of Collinwood.

I happnened to turn on DS this morning and watch as Julia discovered Angelique in 1969.  What I saw that I had never noticed in all the times I have seen the series is that the set used for Angelique's house is a slightly altered version of what will be the Parallel Time room in Collinwood not long from now.

I guess because I dislike this part of the series so much, I had never paid attention to this before.  When I saw it this morning, at first I thought they had skipped to Parallel Time and then I realized where they were.

Just goes to show that you can watch an old show over and over again and still find something new it it.

It is too bad that you could not have just kept the 3 good discs and had them replace the bad one.  That way you would be less likely to have any further problems with them.  Fewer discs in the mail to get damaged.

I think it is shameful that you have to pay to send them back.  The one thing I liked about Columbia House, when I got tapes from them was if I had a problem, they sent me a return mail label and I didn't have to pay a thing for an error that was not my doing.  As it stands now, you are having to pay in total $28.00 more than I paid for mine through Amazon.
