Very nice little scene with Desmond and Leticia, who gets her man--the right one--at last. They are so sweet together.

Parallel Gabriel is, if anything, even more revolting that "our" Gabriel. But that's the fun of it!

Joanna has certainly made a lot of complicated plans in a very short time. But she doesn't seem to be too concerned that her beloved younger sister is missing.

The foyer clock chimes 11:00, and in the very next scene, at the jail, the clock there chimes 11:00 too! For once the clocks in the Collins Universe are actually synchronized!

I was a bit skeptical at first, but I really like it! It's atmospheric and seems very well thought out and executed. The acting isn't bad either.

My goodness, Gabriel does seem to enjoy even the prospect of strangling a new victim, doesn't he? But I have to admit I never considered the political/financial ramifications of PT 1840!  [snow_smiley]

I once read somewhere that Joan Bennett said that "our" scatterbrained 1840 Flora Collins was her favorite character, but I also am glad to see that PT Flora is more like our familiar matriarch.

Pennock has even more fun in this episode when he's discussing monogrammed cufflinks with the hapless Daphne.

Next to Ben, Timothy Elliot Stokes is my favorite Thayer David character. Too bad they didn't make more use of him in this story line than to explain parallel time. I love his eagerness as he waits for some parallel-time business to happen! His and Julia's intellectual curiosity sets them apart from all the other characters, along with their (especially Julia's) willingness to follow that curiosity even if the trail leads them off the edge of the map. Nowadays, curiosity has become a dirty word (not to mention intellect).

I had to laugh, though, when our Julia so stringently warns Daphne NOT to hang out in the PT room when it's empty--earlier, Julia, Daphne and Stokes were standing around in it quite at their ease while Daphne was telling the other two about what she saw.

I'm pretty sure too that parallel Aunt Julia is wearing one of the countess's long and cumbersome gowns as well as one of her long and cumbersome wigs. What, they couldn't have found a different 1840s gown for her? Good grief. But I still love her frozen severity and seeming omniscience.

Daphne goes to Edith's room, sees Gabriel's empty wheelchair, and roams the house still calling for Edith.  That seemed a little odd to me.

Even odder is the fact that she seems to have no idea of proper governess behavior. She should be calling for "Mrs. Collins," not "Edith." But then again, she committed the unpardonable breach of falling in love with her employer, who has just been convicted of witchcraft and been condemned to death. No wonder she's a bit addled.

Isn't that the very same bit of statuary that Gerard tried to kill Julia with in 1995?

Interestingly, the piano music Daphne hears from the PT room is Quentin's Theme. Sheesh.

When Edith arrives downstairs for her tryst with Gerard--what, right there in the drawing room?--she is greeted by supernatural disturbances: loud noises, lights that go on and off, etc. Has Daniel started his program of revenge by terrifying his daughter-in-law? Pennock certainly has fun chewing the scenery while killing her. Has he changed the course of history? What would have happened in 1897 without her?

Morgan does have a big head, but maybe because the writers decided to give him artistic talent. In Catherine's subsequent conversation with Parallel Daphne, PDaphne mentions Catherine's mysterious great romance. HE's been gone for five years, Catherine argues, but PDaphne insists there are rumors that he is coming back....

After finding Gabriel's empty wheelchair in Edith's room, Daphne races downstairs and finds Gabriel waiting for her in the drawing room--on his feet??? *shiver*

Of course Carrie doesn't know for sure that Quentin didn't kill Mordecai, but as Jeremy has become more irrational (yes, nicely done!), she seems to have become (somewhat) more rational and less easily led. I think we can also infer that she would never believe that a member of the family that was so good to her family (and especially to Grandfather Ben) would kill anyone. (I know that's convoluted!)

I really enjoyed Dawson's flamboyant summation for the prosecution. Humbert Allen Astredo really seemed to be enjoying himself--I've always loved his expressive use of his hands. Barnabas probably should have done all the things you suggest, Lydia, but I think his rather economical, restrained summation for the defense was intended to be a contrast with Dawson's.

Thanks, Prof! Maybe Mordecai was ahead of his time in recycling....

Right, it was Winter's Secret--perhaps an homage to Vicki?

Zahir, I like your idea very much! Keep us posted!

What an action-packed episode! And some good lines too:

Mordecai to Jeremy: And don't go tom-catting around the village, or I'll hear about it!

Not only is Quentin’s weskit unbuttoned, but his shirt is starting to come untucked, so great is his anxiety when Gerard arrives at last. Quentin to Gerard: Well, well, well, what an unexpected pleasure!

Finally the scales have fallen from Quentin's eyes about Gerard, but it only makes things worse.

Very sweet scenes with Jeremy and Carrie. Carrie has dressed to the nines for her sylvan rendezvous--under her cloak we can see she's wearing her grown-up blue dress, and she has bows and things in her hair.

Doesn't Mordecai look just a little ridiculous in his very tall hat? And what about his taste in home decor? What's with that coat tree made of what look like cow horns? Has Mordecai found an innovative use for the cattle that Quentin supposedly killed?

I seem to remember another one called "A Death in Winter"--or at least "A [Something] in Winter."

And, I forgot to add, I love this bit of dialogue, featuring a wonderful moment from Virginia Vestoff:

Gerard: Do you want Quentin dead?

Samantha: YES! ... No .... I don't know.....

Or the rest of Judah's life, whichever happens second. If he could take over one person's body, he almost certainly can do it again. Do we know for sure that he planned to kill everyone at Collinwood? Or did his plans to be the perpetual Master of Collinwood become derailed somehow?

By "wondrous new lands" I suppose Gerard meant the realm of sorcery, and that he would induct Daphne into his harem/coven.

Oh, dear, another famous Collinwood slap upside the head for a hysterical woman. It was a common script-writing device of those times, not just on DS. But I can't understand why Samantha should prefer a skinny guy (who is actually a 200-year-old warlock) to the epitome of manly beauty.

More 1970s-style steam, this time with Quentin and Joanna (*sigh*) But a nice cliff-hanger ending--this must have been a Friday episode!
