We'll have to face it, says Flora, if it didn't shock him enough, he'll be more trouble than ever--if he really is in love with Melanie, we'll never get rid of him!

Flora is right, of course, but it's still unintentionally funny!

I also like the trimmings on Melanie's gowns. It seems she has two basic ones--blue and flame colored--and each one has two different sets of trimming, so Wardrobe was able to get twice as much mileage from each gown.

Poor Flora has no idea what her little baby boy is preparing for her....  [ghost_shocked]

Yes, the sweetness of the Kendrick-Melanie love story is the perfect antidote for all of the Wuthering Heights storm and stress of the Bramwell-Catherine story.

I know someone who actually lives in Concord, Massachusetts and who assures me that the correct pronounction is closest to Con-kerd. This is how Kendrick pronounces it. He's just come back from three days there--and I'm sure neither Julia nor especially Melanie has been within fifty miles of the place. So I think we can safely assume that Kendrick probably learned the proper pronunciation from the natives.

I also think that Kendrick figures Julia has already done more than enough to Melanie without turning her into a murderess.

Yes, I love that scene at the end where Julia suddenly gets all polite on Kendrick and it doesn't work anyway--because she smiles at him, and Julia Collins never smiles at anybody.

Although Julia has her faults, I thought it was very brave of her to wait with the unconscious James/Morgan while Carrie (in her cute little nightgown and nightcap) goes to get help. Brutus could have rematerialized at any moment. But if J/M locked Carrie in her own room, why didn't she get dressed while she was in there?

Maybe James was hoping to exorcise Brutus somehow--possibly Brutus has some kind of hold on him even beyond the grave, and James wants to be free.

My favorite line in the Julia-Catherine scene: Here are the smelling salts--_IF_ you still need them.

Wonderful work by Kate Jackson in Daphne's scenes with Bramwell. How brave Daphne is, and how utterly honest!

I think Catherine would stay at Collinwood. She must be devoured with guilt. Not only is she carrying the child of her husband's hated rival but her husband is possessed after taking her place in the Locked Room.

I think Bramwell would stay at Collinwood if Catherine does, even if Catherine weren't pregnant. He's just that obsessed.

If Bramwell fessed up to Daphne, I think she would be utterly crushed. She's already told Bramwell that she wants to give him a son. Bramwell might have slept with her for form's sake last night--it was their wedding night, after all, as well as the night that Morgan spent in the Locked Room. But I'm sure it will never happen again.

It's odd that Julia or Wille never asked him how he was turned, it was never really hinted at prior to 1795

Oh, I'm sure they asked--but whether or how Barn answered is another story altogether! I'm sure he kept as much of it as possible from them for as long as possible.

I'm pretty sure that some time after the 1795 story, as Barnabas grew to trust and rely on Julia more, he told her little bits of the story, but never the complete version. At some point, there's a scene with the two of them having a confidential conversation in the mausoleum. (Well, doesn't EVERYBODY have their confidential conversations in a mausoleum??) I don't remember any of the dialogue, but as the scene opens, we can infer from what Julia says that Barnabas has finally told her the whole story of Josette and Angelique and how A. made him a vampire. I wish I could remember what else was happening at the time. Maybe it was when Barn was trying to decide whether to go through with Dr. Lang's experiment. Or maybe it was when Cassandra appeared on the scene and he recognized her. Of course Julia would want to know why he reacted so strongly. I suppose it's safe to say that by that time Willie was also aware of most of the story, if not all the details.

Yes, for all his aloofness, he does seem to be a trusting soul, doesn't he?

Poor Melanie--just when she seems on the verge of finding out something about herself, along comes Julia! But just the fact that M. is actually doing the research shows that she's getting some backbone.

In PT, the upstairs parlor (I love that name!) seems to be a sort of "boys' common room" where the brothers hang out and discuss-- well, whatever they have to discuss. Mostly it seems to involve drinking. I also love that little pop-up liquor cabinet, which we've seen before, I think in 1970 PT.

Maybe Morgan figured that he ought to do some exploring while he was still alive and sane--and maybe get some kind of inside information that might help him break the curse. (Or maybe he was just hoping to find a chamber pot!) So much of the room's terror is its very arbitrariness. It kills some Collinses but merely drives other mad.

The scenes with Melanie and Kendrick are so sweet. Kendrick is so charming when he makes sure Melanie knows he plans on coming back, then they kiss good-night, just to keep in practice, I guess. He may have no idea what's going on, but I'm sure Julia has no idea that he's asking Melanie about her background either--something that I'm sure will prove revolutionary.

Poor Catherine is so ecstatic that Morgan is still alive that she doesn't even notice that he doesn't return her embrace--but Julia and Quentin do. And what an amazing declaration at the end!

I don't have any idea of how Barnabas's portrait ended up at Collinwood, but it's such a hilarious example of Julia's thrift that she gives the newlyweds a present that won't cost the family a dime!

That was a very nice kiss that Bramwell and Catherine shared on the veranda--too bad it's also adulterous. And later on, Catherine flings herself and her unborn child by another man into her husband's arms.

Poor Daphne! I wonder what her wedding night--the same night that Morgan goes into the Locked Room--will be like. Perfunctory on Bramwell's part, I'm sure. But I'm sure she'll be consumed with worry, still thinking that Catherine is in the Locked Room, so maybe she won't notice (much) that Bramwell's attentions aren't as ardent as she would like.

Morgan may be obsessively jealous but he's not all bad--I get the feeling that he really loves Catherine and is sacrificing himself for her sake. Now he has yet another string to his bow--in addition to painting (never mentioned again) and gravedigging, he's now an amateur locksmith.

My goof, Lydia! I thought you were imagining a scenario in which the boy was KNOWN to be Bramwell's son. But of course if Catherine did succeed in covering that up, then your scenario works out perfectly.

And yes, it would have been fun to see some mid-1850s PT storm and stress!

If it's a boy (always if it's a boy) and outlives Morgan, Bramwell's descendants will be Masters of Collinwood.

True--BUT if and only if neither Gabriel nor Quentin produces an heir. Being directly descended from Justin, their heirs would take precedence over Bramwell's son. And of course the feud between the two families would continue into the next generation--Bramwell would make sure of that.

Good point about Quentin and Daphne, too--I hadn't thought of that myself.

And eight crazy Collinses! Wotta concept! What plot possibilities!

And baby makes three! I love Bramwell's reaction to his impending fatherhood. Once he gets over being surprised, he does a complete 180! Any anger he felt toward Catherine is obliterated by her announcement--at least until she insists on being in the lottery.

And I love Quentin in that dishy blue jacket! And of course poor Lieutenant James must have known which side his bread is buttered on, let alone who provides both bread and butter: "The word of a Collins" indeed!

Strangely enough, although Quentin seemed VERY interested in Daphne, he didn't react at all when she up and married Bramwell. What's wrong with this picture???

James Forsythe, Brutus Collins, Amanda Collins--what's going on here? More clues are forthcoming, I'm sure.

The hawk-eyed Julia is starting to be suspicious of Catherine, especially that fainting episode. Funny, though, Julia seems never to have imagined that anybody would stand up to her. She's got poor Melanie so thoroughly cowed that Catherine's independent spirit comes as a complete surprise.

Thanks, Gerard!  [ghost_grin]

I think those "Tombstone"-style coats were called dusters. They seem to have been designed for heavy outdoor activitiy such as hunting and riding. I've seen similar ones in movies set in other time periods, especially the most recent TV iteration of Sense and Sensibility and the 1995 movie of Persuasion. So it would be entirely plausible for Barn to wear one when he goes riding around the Great Estate.

Gosh, well, thanks! *blush* I have to confess that I didn't know the song at all, but I'm certainly flattered to be so distinguished by my cousins on this board. *preens just a teeny bit*

Ah, silly me, assuming that what holds in RT is also true in PT!  [ghost_wink] [ghost_smiley]
