When Carolyn was a little girl, maybe she used to toddle over to visit Bill, who was probably like an uncle to her. They must have been reasonably close for him to call her "Princess" and for her to be so distraught over his death. Maybe Mrs. J., who basically had no child of her own and no one to love or who loved her, would comb her hair on those visits.

I read somewhere that Clarice Blackburn actually had red hair, so in the light of future events, maybe it's just as well that they had her wear the wig.

Mrs. Johnson didn't like the diner's apple pie, either. But I don't blame her for that--I make my own apple pie and I have to say I've never tasted better.   [angel1]

About that mayonnaise, MB: [stfl] [stfl] [stfl]

Roger may have been doing the best he could for breakfast by taking Vicki to the diner. I suspect that at Collinwood, it's everyone for themselves as far as breakfast is concerned. I imagine Elizabeth is the earliest riser, so she probably makes the first pot of coffee of the day. Vicki probably makes breakfast for herself and David. Carolyn probably sleeps till noon. Roger's normal breakfast probably consists of his first martini once the sun is over the yardarm, so to speak, and about 11:00 a.m.

Interesting stuff about lenses, about which I know less than nothing. But nice to speculate.

This has to be the most location footage of any episode.

Roger takes Vicki on the Grand Tour of the Cannery--the Collinses have switched from whales to sardines!  [hall2_smiley]

At some point when Roger and Vicki are sitting in the diner, Roger's hat suddenly materializes on the table.

Carolyn tries to talk her mother into hiring Mrs. Johnson as a housekeeper. Elizabeth replies, I prefer to keep my own house. She is wearing a beautiful black velvet robe and her favorite pearls--just what I always wear to do my cleaning.  [hall2_grin]

Profound apologies, MT--I never meant to steal your thunder! But even reading my old summaries, I got all excited about the Old House. I still remember how magical it was when I saw it the first time, [spoiler]even though I had already seen the Barnabas episodes.[/spoiler]

The effect of Josette (apparently played by an unknown extra!) stepping out of the portrait is beautifully done. So is the shot where she's moving to and fro in front of the Old House. Is she dancing? Or is she trying to escape?

Burke certainly is not at his best today, even though he tells Carolyn she does good iin the world by just walking around and letting everyone look at her.

Nice work by Nancy Barrett, indeed!

And that "yearning" theme that I always associate with Barnabas.

From the little I remember of daytime soaps of that era, you were lucky if they played a chord or two on an electric organ, just before the commercial breaks.

David tells Vicki that his parents threw furniture at one another when they were fighting. Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

More spoiled-brat behavior from Carolyn when Joe can't take her to lunch.

I like the scene of Roger strolling along the dock. Then we see him (1) go into his office, which is surprisingly un-ostentatious, considering his sister is the Mistress of Collinwood; (2) put on a pair of glasses, which I think we never see again; and (3) actually do some work.

Then again, he's pretty awful at the end of this episode when he asks David, Who would you rather be rid of? Me or Miss Winters?

He was always one of my favorite actors on the show, and moved between Joe and Nathan with surprising ease. His portrayal of Joe allows us to see that [spoiler]there's a lot more to him than Carolyn--to her later regret--ever suspects.[/spoiler]

To his credit, Burke is surprised when Carolyn tells him that Vicki didn't immediately go back to Collinwood and retail his insistent accusation that Roger killed Bill. He does have the grace to concede that he might have been wrong about Vicki.

I do admit to feeling a guilty pleasure when Maggie lied so boldly to the sheriff. She certainly knows her father's faults, but she'll defend him to her last breath.

This ep. confirms Magnus's idea that Burke has lost all respect for Vicki. He hopes that she won't suffer the fate of Ananias--being struck dead for lying. Not too vengeful, are we, Burke?

Mrs. Johnson is like a breath of fresh air with her plain speaking! Go, Sarah!

Vicki's story of writing herself letters is one of those classic moments. I suppose it was a hint at the original theory of Vicki's birth.

Burke is upset that Vicki's story doesn't fit his idea of what happened, but I think he still admires her for being so honest.

Nice moment when Burke tells Roger, I want your hide.
