Current Talk '15 II / Re: Discuss - Ep #0976

I think that Bruno's place is somewhere on the edge of town--appropriate for his nefarious doings.

It's good to see somebody besides Barn and Julia actually taking action. I guess JF and GH were off filming HoDS. Like everyone else here, I suspect LE had a blast playing PT Roger for a change.

Go RT Roger! At last he directs his pompous rage at an appropriate object. I think this is the only time he knocks somebody out. Then he hustles Carolyn out of the house.

Chris changes, and the werewolf bursts through the now double-size window. Bruno revives to find himself home alone--or almost alone, because Sky and Sabrina are still locked in their respective closets. He tells the long-gone Carolyn, Your reprieve is only temporary.

Elizabeth and Roger have a nice but brief scene reflecting on various things. This reminded me of the very early days of the show when they had more interactions.

Carolyn walks through the woods to the carriage to see Jeb but runs into Bruno instead. Carolyn’s terrible night isn’t over yet. She is walking through a clearing in the woods when Bruno practically jumps out at her. I’m going to tell Jeb about what happened, Carolyn says indignantly. You aren’t going to see him, Bruno replies. She is shocked but probably not surprised when Bruno says, Nicholas and I are going to get even with Jeb through you. Without you, Jeb will have no reason to live. I don’t understand, Carolyn says. And you never will--because I am going to kill you! Carolyn is too stunned to run away. I don’t like doing this, Bruno lies, his eyes glittering with horrifying anticipation as he reaches out his hands toward her neck. Carolyn tries to get away, but suddenly the werewolf growls and springs seemingly out of nowhere. It casually pulls Carolyn out of Bruno’s grip, almost throwing her aside. Then it gets down to business with Bruno as Carolyn runs off screaming. Since Bruno in his arrogance has no silver on him, the werewolf swats him almost carelessly, throwing him against a tree, then grabs him again and throws him onto his back. Bruno screams, No, no, don’t come near me! But the werewolf repays Bruno with interest for his past cruelties, launching itself on top of him and raking him with its claws [and making its positively last appearance on the show, with Bruno as its last victim].

Carolyn runs back to Collinwood screaming to her mother and uncle about the werewolf. Roger rushes out, apparently unarmed, to do-- well, something.

The werewolf is long gone when Roger finds Bruno lying in the clearing. Blood is streaming from his mouth and from gashes on his face, and his torn shirt reveals (nothing to shout home about and) even worse gashes in vital spots. Roger kneels beside him and promises to get a doctor. It’s too late, Bruno gasps out, and continues brokenly, That animal... it’s not really an animal.... It’s really... really... But he dies before he can finish (though MS forgets to stop breathing!).

Despite what he's just seen, when Roger gets home he goes straight upstairs to the East Wing and opens the doors. He is astonished to find the room “brilliantly” furnished and brightly lit, just as Barnabas described it. Like Barnabas, he tries to enter, but is stopped by the invisible barrier. Bruno--wearing different but equally vulgar clothes--is looking at the portrait of Angelique as he lights a cigarette. Good Lord! Roger gasps, It is impossible. I just saw him die! He calls to Bruno. Bruno does not react to him but tells the portrait, You’re just as beautiful as ever. I remember you sitting for this portrait while listening to the music I composed for you. Parallel Elizabeth enters. What are you doing here? she asks coldly. I belong here, Bruno replies. You’re the only one who thinks so, Elizabeth says. _She_ thought so, Bruno says, indicating the portrait. Quentin is returning soon and will never let you stay, Elizabeth announces. I know he’s remarried, Bruno replies. _She_ will never let another woman come into the house. _She_ won’t--you know that as well as I do. Everyone talks of Angelique as though she’s still alive, Elizabeth remarks with disgust--it’s frightening. Nothing was ever frightening about her, Bruno says. You all envied her because she was the most intelligent and most beautiful creature that ever graced this earth. I think you should go, Elizabeth opines. I’m in no mood to argue, Bruno says, but I’ll be seeing you around. After he leaves, Elizabeth glares at Angelique’s portrait, her eyes full of hate.

Roger is amazed, but not too amazed to start walking away as he realizes that Barnabas was right. Suddenly he is thunderstruck to hear his own voice from the room behind him: Was that Bruno, the terrible-tempered boy wonder, I saw just now? parallel Roger drawls. Parallel Elizabeth says Bruno has come back. Parallel Roger says, Back to compose more of his morbid music and bore us with his tiresome memories of her? Well, it will be worth seeing the look on Quentin's face when he finds out. As parallel Roger enjoys a good laugh at this prospect, our Roger looks on in total disbelief.....

According to DS Wiki, Nancy Barrett reads the VO for this episode.

I also love PT Roger and Carolyn, especially that everything about PT Carolyn--hair, makeup, and especially wardrobe--is so different from RT Carolyn. I can imagine that everybody jumped at the chance to play different characters.

Presumably Sky continues to hang in the closet for the next few episodes--the writers seem to have forgotten about him.

Once again, Bruno proves that he's a nasty piece of work. I guess he's still hoping to become the Leviathan Supreme Being 3.0.

Lovely scene with RT Carolyn and Roger, who is actually very tender with her. He calls her "Kitten," probably for the last time.

Probably Bruno was wrong to lock Chris and Sabrina in the same room. Being together, even in danger of their lives, only makes them stronger. Chris looks out the (single-pane) window, hoping for some way to escape.

Roger is wowed by Barn's explanation of parallel time. Then Barn is wowed when he sees PT Carolyn and Roger. The music box theme turns out to be the notorious "Ode to Angelique," penned by-- wait and see. PT Roger addresses a soliloquy to Angelique's portrait, earning only hostility from PT Carolyn. And she's married to PT Will! She's come to get Will's book back. “The witch” stopped him from getting it for me, Carolyn says. (Presumably she means Hoffman.) A historical magazine wants to print a chapter from it, and that means money. She determinedly opens drawers in the main room and in the alcove, which we now see contains Angelique’s luxurious queen-size bed, while Roger follows her around trying to get her to stop. You would defile her room for money, wouldn’t you? he fumes. You would take her book for the two or three hundred dollars you might get? Quentin doesn’t keep us the way he keeps you, Carolyn shoots back. Stung, Roger orders her to get out. Not until I find it! she retorts, looking him in the eye. I won’t have you going through her things, Roger says, shaking with fury. I remember how she felt about you. Carolyn laughs scornfully. Stop shouting, she tells him. You make such a fool or yourself--not that that is unusual. I have no intention of leaving you alone in Angelique’s room, Roger huffs. It’s all right with me, Carolyn replies, then shuts the doors in Barnabas’s face. He calls her name and pounds on the doors but gets no answer. He opens the doors, but the room is bare and dark once more. Why does it disappear when they close the door? he wonders. Why? Is there never to be an explanation? Carolyn married to Willie, Roger in love with Angelique--even if he denies it. And Quentin--Quentin, the Master of Collinwood! What strange world have I discovered? What?

Pretty feeble escape attempt by Sabrina and Chris that results in Bruno stabbing Chris. At last Bruno wises up and takes Sabrina to another room. Carolyn (wearing her periwinkle blue dress) gets a phone call from Bruno. I’ve found a person who can make the shadow disappear, he tells her. Come to my house--without Jeb, because this person doesn’t like Jeb. You have to make this person care. I’ll be right over, Carolyn assures him. Don’t tell Jeb you’re coming, Bruno warns her. I’ll tell no one, Carolyn replies and hangs up. As she hurries into her coat, Roger comes downstairs and asks where she’s going. I’ll let you know when I come back, she says and dashes out the door. Roger asks her what happened, but she has already left.

Chris is in the room, searching for a way out or something to help him escape. He already looks like a creature in a trap. Bruno leans up against the other side of the door. Don’t cry out, he warns, even if you have the pain. Scream and Sabrina will pay! Carolyn arrives. Where is this person? she demands. I’m willing to pay you whatever it takes.

While Carolyn and Bruno are talking, the transformation begins. Chris writhes on the floor of his prison, desperately trying not to cry out.

Is this person Nicholas Blair? Carolyn asks. Nicholas could do nothing, Bruno replies. The person is in that room. It’s odd that you keep the room locked, Carolyn observes. It seemed wisest, Bruno replies, since _he_ didn’t seem to want to wait. He opens the door. Carolyn rushes to Chris as Bruno quietly shuts the door after her. Carolyn tries to lift Chris up. Get out! he screams at her and pushes her away. Pleased with his success so far, Bruno smiles as he waits outside. Jeb will have little reason to live now, he gloats. He starts to laugh as we hear Chris finally scream in pain.....

Yes, he certainly did! I'm so glad they didn't kill him off. But no wonder he was so fixated on Widows Hill in the earliest episodes--I guess that was supposed to foreshadow his eventual fate.

So OS Roger was supposed to be a villain! I had no idea. He did seem kind of dodgy at first, blithely telling someone that he had spent all his money, and that's why he had to return to Collinwood.

Thanks to both Gothick and Midnite for the details!

Hi, Patti--welcome back! I can answer your OS questions at least.

OS Angelique's curse was that whoever loved Barnabas would die and that he would live with it for all eternity. Angelique was amoral to start with, and was increasingly desperate because everything else she had done to force Barnabas to love her hadn't worked. She stuck pins into a Sarah doll to make her sick enough that Barn, not knowing it was a hex, promised to marry Angelique if she cured his cherished little sister. Angelique took out the pins, Sarah was cured, Barn married Angelique, and we know what happened next. But Sarah really sealed her fate when she was dying after seeing what her big brother had become. (She went into shock and died of pneumonia.) While Barnabas held her, her last words were, "I love you, Barnabas. I always will."

Roger was the last one out the door when the family abandoned Collinwood to Quentin the angry ghost. On the doorstep, Roger shook his fist and vowed that they would be back. Of course, the next thing we know, we hear Quentin's uproarious laughter echoing throughout the empty, deserted, darkened house.

In the OS, Barnabas and Sarah--and their parents--all were born in America, because the Collinses had come over in the late 1600s and built the Old House atop Widows Hill. I think that early in the movie, we have a shot of the boy Barnabas turning to look at the girl Angelique as he and his parents embark on a ship to America (from Liverpool, maybe?). I think Barn and his parents traveled in whatever was first class in the 1700s, whereas Angelique and her mother were in steerage on the same ship. So in the movie, only Sarah--if she was in the movie at all--was born in America.

Johnny Lee Miller was movie Roger and now plays the title role in "Sherlock." If you want to see more of him in a very different role, check out the 2009 BBC miniseries of Jane Austen's "Emma," in which he played Mr. Knightley.

I don't remember who played Vicki or Carolyn in the movie (which I'm afraid I hated), but Gulliver McGrath played David.

No idea why they made movie Roger such a jerk. I guess they were just amping up OS Roger for the big screen. Don't remember the paintings in the basement, I'm afraid.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps!

That's true--JB did some plays while Elizabeth was supposedly in a coma or buried alive or whatever.

Thanks, WP! I never realized how many episodes were shot out of order! Was it always like that, or was it just to accommodate the film-shooting schedule?

And imagine drawing up a schedule like that without Excel. Some poor soul probably just used a batch of postcards carefully placed on the living-room floor.

I agree, Uncle R. But I have to say that during her captivity, Maggie did a bit better than Vicki. True, she pretty much lost her mind and identity and almost her life, but she had just enough shreds of personality and sanity left to escape, with Sarah's help.

Sabrina is being held captive by not only a psychopath and a lackey but also (though unknown to her) by the devil himself.  [6042]

Thanks, MB!

MT, apparently the maps aren't at the carriage house because it isn't in this episode. Are they in Bruno's place? All the frame grabs I could find show a painting of a sailing ship. Oh well.

Uncle Roger, I entirely agree. And the scene with Quentin and his would-be great-grandaughter-in-law is one of my favorites in the entire series, along with the scene a few episodes ago with Quentin and Chris.

Nice catch about the maps at the carriage house, MT--I don't remember that at all. I wonder if the island is Martinique. Maybe DS Wiki has a frame grab.

Yes, this was an action-packed episode for a Thursday (at least I'm guessing it was a Thursday ep.).

So Sky turns out to be okay after all--? I guess he wants to get on the non-Leviathan side in case they win.

Don Briscoe reads what may be his last (?) voiceover--?

Sky Rumson barges in on Sabrina and Bruno. The one second in which she reacts costs her dearly. Sky grabs her, and Bruno grabs the gun. He orders Sky to take Sabrina to the back room and phones Nicholas. Sabrina asks Sky why they want to hurt Chris, but Sky says he doesn't know, he's just following orders.

Nicholas arrives and takes a quick look at Sabrina before he and Bruno confer in the main room. (Sky stays with Sabrina.) Bruno explains who Sabrina is and who her fiancé is. But Chris's name means nothing to Nicholas until Bruno starts to recite, "Even if a man is pure of heart and says his prayers at night...." Nicholas is delighted to learn that Chris is the werewolf. He says, I want to redeem [his word!] myself by putting Chris’s “talents” to good use. Jeb’s marriage to Carolyn is just about the only thing keeping him alive, so if anything happened to her, he would lose the will to live. My mission has failed, but if I can destroy Jeb, I will have salvaged something. If Angelique gets to Jeb first, it will be all over for me. Just tell me what you want me to do, Bruno says eagerly.

Jeb is in the darkened drawing room at Collinwood, wearing yet another green sweater. Chris Jennings stops by. He introduces himself but gives no sign that he recognizes Jeb--and of course Jeb has never seen Chris in human form. In a brief conversation, Jeb tells Chris that Carolyn and Elizabeth are out. Chris is getting anxious about Sabrina. I hope you find her, Jeb says politely. Chris thanks him and leaves.

Meanwhile, Sabrina hasn’t lost her wits along with her liberty. Nicholas must have forgotten about you, she taunts Sky. I don’t hear him and Bruno talking anymore. Sky doesn’t believe her until he checks outside. Neither Nicholas nor Bruno is there--but Angelique (wearing an attractive pale green dress) is sitting calmly in a chair, smiling at her husband’s reversal of fortune. From tycoon to lackey, she comments. My, how the mighty have fallen!

What are you doing here? Sky asks. I came to see you, Angelique replies, then picks up where Sabrina left off. Every one of your business ventures has suddenly failed, she comments. There is nothing you can do about it--because all you are now is Nicholas Blair’s slave. I’m important to Nicholas, Sky huffs. All you’re doing right now is guarding a helpless young girl, Angelique observes. You aren’t important to Nicholas. Nicholas doesn’t care anything about you. Angelique continues needling Sky, who loses his temper. Unperturbed, Angelique says, I’ll tell you how it will all end: Nicholas is going to find some ingenious way of doing himself in. He always does. And in the end, you are going to be alone--all alone--with no one to turn to. Then, someone is going to put you out of your misery. Who knows? she says with an anticipatory smile. It may even be me. Well, I had better not keep you any longer. I know you have an important job to do in the next room. Instead of disappearing, she simply walks out the door. Sky looks frightened, apparently realizing she has told him the truth.

Jeb is still alone in the drawing room when Nicholas steps in and turns on the lights. Jeb recoils in fear, but Nicholas says he's only there for a moment. I’ve come in answer to your message through Bruno. I thought it deserved a personal reply. You mean, Jeb asks hopefully, you are going to help me? Nicholas smiles with enjoyment as he replies, No, I don’t mean that at all. I advise you to accept the fact that you’re a doomed man. I can’t believe that Angelique will destroy me! Jeb says. I hope she doesn’t, Nicholas replies--because I want to reserve that particular pleasure for myself. He says goodnight and exits the drawing room. From the foyer, he watches Jeb for a moment through the almost-closed drawing room doors, then leaves.

At the cottage, Chris is now nearly frantic for Sabrina as he talks to Quentin. Even though the moon is full, he vows not to go to Windcliff until he knows Sabrina is safe. Suddenly Sky knocks at the door and introduces himself. He tells Chris that Bruno is holding Sabrina at a house on the edge of town. Just the mention of Bruno's name is enough to alarm Chris. That’s why I came, Sky replies, to help you and Sabrina. Chris is wary. You have to trust me, Sky insists. He shows Chris Sabrina’s compact (gone are the days!) as proof. I’ve been guarding Sabrina for Bruno and a man named Nicholas Blair, Sky says. I don’t know what they’re planning, but I’m tired of seeing them hurt people. If they knew I was here, they would kill me. I know they’re after you, but I don’t know how it involves me. You could just be luring me to the house, Chris says suspiciously. I could, Sky agrees, but you’ll have to trust me. He gives Chris the key to Bruno’s house. Come to the house at midnight, he instructs Chris. I’ll take care of Bruno, and then we can rescue Sabrina. What’s your angle? Chris asks suspiciously. I just don’t want to be involved with them anymore, Sky replies. All I want to do is get out from under them. Is Sky telling the truth? Wait and see.

Jeb finally turns on the drawing room lights--and there's the shadow, bigger than ever. He calls out to Angelique in terror.

Sky returns to Bruno’s house and goes to the back room. Did they treated you all right? he asks Sabrina. They left me alone, Sabrina replies. Did you see Chris? I did, Sky answers, and we made plans. If all goes well, you’ll be free by midnight. Sabrina is grateful, but Sky replies, Don’t thank me yet, baby. There’s no guarantee that we will succeed. Actually, there is even less than no guarantee, because Bruno is posted outside the door, listening to every word.

Bruno unlocks Sabrina’s prison and tells Sky, Come out--I want to talk to you. Outside, Bruno asks, Where did you go? I went into town to see a friend from New York, Sky answers. Bruno is skeptical: I worry about you, Jeb [should have been Sky]. You see, you no longer have any outside friends. All you’ve got is Nicholas and me. It is up to us to take care of you--and believe me, that's what we are going to do.

Jeb hears Angelique's voice: You can’t hide from it, Jeb--no matter how hard you try. Angelique suddenly materializes in the corner between the fireplace and the secret panel. You kept imploring me to appear. Well, here I am, she says, opening her arms as if taking a bow. Turn on the lights. When he hesitates, she says, As long as I’m in the room, the shadow won’t appear. Please, take this thing off me! he begs her. I’m a changed man, married to Carolyn now, and I love her very much. I loved Sky Rumson very much, Angelique answers. I wasn’t responsible for that, Jeb says desperately. I hardly even knew Sky. The whole so-called conspiracy revolved around you, Angelique replies implacably, so I hold you responsible--as well as Nicholas. I intend to settle with Nicholas as soon as I’m through with you. Don’t you have any feelings at all? Jeb asks. I had them once, she answers. They all died when I found out the truth about Sky. Jeb implores her, If you won’t do anything for my sake, please think of Carolyn. Angelique says, I thought of Carolyn... a lot. I feel and identify with Carolyn. I am sorry she is going to be unhappy. I know how that feels. [Her compassion seems quite uncharacteristic.] But you haven't much longer to wait. In only a short time now, the shadow will be full grown. That will be the end of you. I will be there to witness it, Jeb, she gloats. I wouldn't want to miss it. Angelique! Jeb calls frantically, but she has vanished again. Standing in the middle of the room, he shouts defiantly, I’m going to find a way to beat it!

Chris uses Sky’s key to open Bruno’s front door. He listens at the door to the back room but hears nothing. He opens another door--and finds Sky Rumson hanging by his wrists. Help me, Sky whispers. The next moment, Bruno has Sabrina’s revolver aimed at Chris’s back. Good evening, Mr. Jennings, he says. Sabrina and I have been waiting for you.....

Thanks, Gothick. I like this behind-the-scenes stuff very much.
