It was very nice to see Joe (great job, as usual, by Joel Crothers) thinking through the whole time business.

Color me naive, but I didn't realize they were padding the shoulders of Quentin's jackets in 1840. (But I suppose that in 1840, they were actually doing this anyway.) I'll have to try to remember to look out for it!

For once Vicki is relaxed and can enjoy her dinner with Burke. She even regales him with yet another foundling-home story, but he's only glad to see her at ease.

I'm with you, Lydia--I'm sure David would have found some way to sneak out of the house. Fortunately for all concerned, his room seems to be one of the few that does NOT have a moveable panel that opens onto a secret passage.  [easter_smiley]

Too bad, MT, but at least we'll have you with us before then.

I wish I could remember whether that space on the foyer wall had been shown in much earlier episodes, but I do remember noting (around these eps.) the crossed swords and the shield, all of which will reappear again in due time.

And Joeytrom, your idea is great!

That's an interesting question. Another story line a long time from now will have a kind of answer.

The scene with Laura and Burke was great. I loved how her expression changed once Burke had left.

When Vicki leaves David's room, she locks the door behind her, even though she almost certainly knows that a mere lock won't keep Laura out.

A sign of things to come!
In the foyer at Collinwood, the wall where the portrait of Barnabas soon will appear is now empty, with only the chair beneath it. (Until this episode it held a shield with two swords crossed behind it.)
Sure looks like him!

And thanks for the link, MB!

I don't know if I'll ever think of David as a standard-issue boy. When David decides to go away with his mother, Vicki is alarmed, and David complains, Everyone is always watching me! And whenever I come into a room, all the adults stop talking!

For once Roger and Burke agree that they must cooperate to get David away from his mother. David is ecstatic when Burke proposes a trip, via seaplane, to a lakeside cottage--with muskies (a kind of large, freshwater pike--I had to look them up) in the lake. Burke tousles David's hair to wish him goodnight. Roger doesn't touch his son--doesn't know how, I suppose--but very kindly wishes him a good night.

But while David is having pleasant dreams upstairs, Vicki makes a horrible discovery!

It's too bad we never got to see what the human Laura was like.  She probably was unaware of what she really was.

Interesting that every century, some unsuspecting couple in the Murdoch family had a daughter, who they had no idea was really a Phoenix!  Perhaps they are another cursed family.

Interesting thoughts! Maybe Phoenix-ism kicks in at puberty or something. And what a great idea for a DS spinoff, this one exploring the lives of the cursed Murdoch family. *cue spooky music*

Kudos to David Henesy for a stellar performance as David Radcliff! DR calmly recalls resting happily in his mother's arms in the flames and calmly predicts that there will be another fire and death in a small house by the sea. Finally he becomes frantic when he sees his mother in the distance.

Joe's innate kindness shines through when he doesn't tell David that he and Carolyn explored the Old House as kids.

Farewell, John Lasell!

As far as I remember, if someone told David Collins about Dr. Guthrie's death, it happened off camera.

Later:
In this episode, the location of the portrait of Barnabas is seen, less than four weeks before it will appear for the first time. (Yes! YES!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!) In the foyer, Laura sits on a chair under the spot where it will be hung on the wall.
Dr. Guthrie's car crash is actually a recycling of Roger's accident way back in episode 15, but still very scary!

I wonder if the makers of DS were floored at seeing this ep onscreen, the way the music and events and pacing and effects came together, and it may have been a revelation as to what they were really capable of.  I'm thinking of the slow scenes with little or no dialogue, of Laura affecting Guthrie, Laura's eyes in the fire...

That's a fascinating thought, MT--especially considering what will be happening before too long! I've always thought that when the writing on this show was good, it was really second to none!
