OMG, Burt Convy doesn't even bear thinking about!

But who was the second alternate? I'm assuming the third was JF.

Maybe the writers did miss an opportunity for a Vicki-Burke-Frank triangle, but I can't imagine Frank being explosive.  [ghost_wink]

Jason seems to be the brains and Willie the brawn of duo. Maybe Jason talked Willie out of a potentially disastrous situation somewhere back in time, then decided they should team up.

Whatever you may say about Mitchell Ryan, I loved Burke's triumphant, wolfish grin when he finally got Sam to admit that he wasn't driving the car.

Interesting about Roger's original fate. Lucky us that it didn't pan out that way--think of all that angry pomposity we would have missed!  [ghost_grin]

Jason's confederate is first mentiond by name. According to one bit of trivia I picked up somewhere, he was originally going to be called Chris!

Roger is disgusted--and rightly so for a change--when he arrives home and Jason invites him into his own drawing room and offers him a drink.

Jason tries to threaten Elizabeth into giving him "assistance"--that is, an allowance. I refuse to be threatened! she declares, but he is unmoved. Why don't you do it for old times' sake, he suggests.

What a pity that Sam's paintings are apparently lost forever. But Sam has finally come clean with Maggie--and it took us a mere 198 episodes to get there! But
we'll have to wait even longer to learn Elizabeth's secret.
When Jason joins Roger in the basement, he stands under an overhead light. But instead of turning it on, he lights a match and nearly burns his fingers. Roger has no compunction whatever about shining his flashlight right in Jason's eyes. Go Roger!!!

Jason is such a snake, but watching him is so much fun!

Elizabeth tries to warn Carolyn not to believe everything she may see and hear. Of course, this warning goes right over Carolyn's head. But Vicki is a bit more astute and asks Elizabeth if there's any way she can help. Poor Elizabeth makes a very touching plea to Vicki, asking if she can count on Vicki's loyalty. Of course Vicki agrees.

I had always thought that as Mistress of Collinwood, Elizabeth could face down an invasion of dragons, but Jason just has a stranglehold on her. It's actually painful to see. Great acting by all!

David is off on the promised fishing trip with Burke!

Love the very end of this episode! Just as Jason walks easily right past Carolyn and into the foyer, the camera pulls back just enough to let us see a corner of an ornate picture or mirror frame.  [ghost_cheesy] Then poor Elizabeth's double-take is priceless!

Yes--she'd definitely hit up several artists just to make her trip worthwhile.

What fun to watch Jason insinuate himself into Collinwood! He's always been one of my favorite characters. He even left the coffee shop owing Maggie for the two cups of coffee, as well as the $100 he lost on a bet with her.

Wonderful article, Nancy--thanks for sharing. It's always nice when people don't forget their roots.

Poor little David is actually trembling with anxiety at the idea that his aunt Elizabeth might not be well yet.

But once Elizabeth is home, her fear and worry only get worse as she asks Vicki and then Roger whether Dr. Guthrie or anyone else went to the basement. Great scene with Elizabeth and Roger concerning the key! Poor Roger really is all at sea about the change in his sister.

Speaking of Roger and Elizabeth's parents,
we will meet their father, Jamison, a long time from now.
But I seem to remember that Roger went to boarding school, as was proper for a young boy of his time and place and social standing. So he probably didn't get much in the way of parental affection, let alone parental hugs. If anything, he most likely regarded his father as a rather distant presence. If so, it's certainly no wonder he has trouble relating to David.

Somebody probably has already posted this, but here's the NY Times obituary.

David Selby's "Letter to Jonathan" is a lovely and touching piece of writing.

Still can't believe it--and I didn't even start watching till the reissue on public TV here in the 1980s!

Thanks, Professor--too bad she didn't do more acting work.
