Loved loved loved Roger's sour, sarcastic answers to Willie's questions.

The scenes in the kitchen and the drawing room were truly frightening, however not-right James Hall was for the part. We get what I believe is Willie's first reference to himself in the third person. Nice bit by NB at the end of the drawing-room scene.

Not the last time we will see "Uncle Roger's war pistol." Try as I might, I can't imagine Roger in the military, let alone in battle. And anyway, the timing is wrong, I think. He's too young for Korea and too old for Vietnam. The draft was still in effect, but he might have wheedled Elizabeth into getting him a deferment. Anyone have any ideas?

The closing credits for this episode roll over a shot of the foyer--and at a very oblique angle, a certain portrait is visible for the first time....

I always thought it was funny that Mrs. Johnson is such a terrible cook--it serves Willie right!

When Elizabeth tries to get rid of Willie, Jason reminds her about the last, horribly explicit detail of that night eighteen years ago.

When Elizabeth and Jason rescue Vicki, she answers Elizabeth's question accurately. Elizabeth asks if Willie touched her, and honest Vicki is forced to admit he didn't. In those days, sexual harrassment hadn't been given a name yet. Rape victims hardly dared press charges because they knew they themselves would end up being on trial. There's nothing wrong with Vicki's brain, just the culture she was in.

Janet, thanks (I think) for the definition of "speedball." But I'm still not sure why Willie calls Maggie one--unless he thinks she gave him the bum's rush?

[The text of the opening voiceover has been unspoilered since it's from this same ep.]

Thanks--just being extra-careful!

Mystic, what you say makes plenty of sense. Hall is really creepy, isn't he.

I agree. In these early story lines the writers went to great pains in developing the characters and their motivations. Burke met Vicki while they were still on the train, and I think he was already interested in her when they arrived at Collinsport. I think we're meant to see her as a sort of unwitting emissary between him and the Collinses. Everything he did to the Collinses in his plan for revenge would affect Vicki as well, and that may have restrained him somewhat.

Even if Elizabeth had told Matthew that
she killed Paul deliberately,
I have a feeling Matthew would have remained loyal to her and might have felt more protective of her.

Some good catches there, MS! I liked it that Maggie and the bartender don't talk but mime, presumably so they don't have to pay the bartender for playing a speaking part.

But I'm not sure Jason has Willie under control. He could do nothing to prevent Willie from joining him at Collinwood. Willie had the upper hand there.

We learn that poor Carolyn has been desperate to learn any information about her father--her mother refuses to discuss him. Jason glibly tells her, Paul Stoddard was the kind of man that men liked--and women more so. He was charming, but always moving on. I was surprised when he married your mother, because he was a ladies’ man, not the type to settle down. He and your mother made a handsome couple--he with his charm, she with her great beauty. Paul Stoddard and I were very much alike, he declares.
(Much later, Carolyn will discover how true his words are, when Dennis Patrick returns to play Paul Stoddard.)
Jason adds, If Paul could see you now, he would be very proud of you.
(Much later, this will also turn out to be true.)
AM reads the best opening voiceover EVER:

My name is Victoria Winters. The foundations of Collinwood house a frightful secret, a secret that has lain dormant for eighteen years, a secret awakened by a stranger. But there is another stranger, one who is to awaken and unleash a force that will affect the lives of everyone.

Hang on to your socks!  [ghost_cheesy]

Jason has a hard time managing Willie, as we see here: You made me promises, Willie complains. You said everything would be great. We’d have the easy life. I could have everything I wanted--but what have I seen? Just that new suit you’re wearing. Well, what do you want--the top or the bottoms? Jason snaps.  [ghost_cheesy]

Jason tells Willie that he's had this particular scheme in mind for eighteen years--talk about a loooooong con! Willie is more of a smash-and-grab type who wants his gratification yesterday and doesn't care if he has to get his hands dirty (short of murder, though, I'd guess) to get it. But he's unwilling to actually put any thought into it--that's Jason's department. I think Jason keeps Willie around for the dirty-hands part of his plans.

Please feel better ASAP, Magnus!

Yes, the Great Saga of the Car Accident ends with Roger slinking out of the drawing room because Elizabeth has so many terrible worries of her own. It is kind of a sudden pull-up.

Either her mother's warning has finally sunk in, or Carolyn has finally realized the effect Jason is having on her mother.

The scene of Jason and Elizabeth in the basement was terrific! Now we know why she is so completely at his mercy. His cruelty is so casual. Truly she has a backbone of titanium to endure what she must and still run Collinsport Enterprises.

Yes, and even worse, because poor Sam is only a freelance artist, of course he didn't have health insurance.

Thanks for the link! I didn't see any of the original actors but will take it for granted that they're there.

I was most interested in the oval portrait behind JD's shoulder in one shot--a portrait of Naomi, perhaps?

Regarding that "Look into my eyes" clip, JF would never, ever have needed that silly, overdone hand gesture. And JD's Barnabas is sadly lacking in the fastidiousness of JF's. I'm waiting till I can watch this movie for free, and even then I might give it a miss.

Say it again, Sam!  [ghost_cheesy]

Poor Elizabeth--by the time Jason is done tormenting her (for now) and leaves her alone, she can barely hold back the tears. It's really painful to see her this way. But this night is far from over for her....

That's even more mysterious than the identity of the real Deep Throat!

Can you just imagine Barnabas with curls hanging across his forehead instead of pointy bangs?!  [ghost_blink]

What a horrible concept!
