I think Willie was too valuable to be locked up and that he really is in Bangor, possibly selling some of Naomi's jewels.

HOWEVER: After Burke and Joe leave the Old House, the louvered door to the left of the fireplace  opens, and Maggie emerges. She’s still in her nightgown, but during her walk to the Old House she must have found a hairdresser somewhere--or else Willie’s talents extend even further than we thought--because she’s now sporting a fine crop of banana curls. So maybe he isn't in Bangor after all?

WELCOME, JOSETTE'S ROOM!

When Barn plays the music box and starts his brainwashing program, his voice is almost incantatory Another fine JF moment!

I also am very partial to PT 1840. I've always liked JF's work as Bramwell, and Kate Jackson's work too.

And yes, the whole Adam story got tiresome very quickly, but there are some nice scenes with him and Carolyn. And of course I wouldn't have missed Nicholas for anything!

Yeah, I liked the whole Stairway Through Time thing, with Quentin at one point mentioning a professor at Nuremberg University or somewhere who first got the idea.

And thanks to the kind soul who fixed the spoilers in my post from yesterday. Sorry....  [ghost_embarrassed]

I always thought that since Ben was so kind to Daniel in 1795, Daniel repaid the favor by inviting Ben to live in the Great House, where he would be well taken care of. I thought it was very touching that they let him have the portrait of Barnabas, which is in the place of honor above his mantel--another nice touch, because a servant normally might not get a room with a fireplace.
The way he is dispatched is pretty awful, though, and pretty gratuitous.
Daniel isn't only senile
but also pretty thoroughly insane. It was sad that the little boy who wanted so desperately to go home to New York with his sister well again would end up decrepit and mad in a house he must have hated. I agree that when he murdered his wife it must have made his insanity even worse, but somewhere it's implied that he originally started losing his mind when Joshua told him about the thing sleeping in the coffin in the secret room.
It's true that although 1840 isn't the best of the storylines, it's still entertaining to watch Gabriel and Gerard and Quentin and Samantha too.

Very sorry to hear your sad news.

I suppose hospitals stopped using glass bottles because of breakage, but they are recyclable as well as non-reactive.

The hands on the clock in Maggie's room don't move, even though time is passing. This condition seems to affect all the clocks in the Collinwood universe.

This second Doc Woodard is my favorite. It seems that already a wild hypothesis about the bite marks is beginning to take shape at the back of his mind.

While Dr. Woodard is examining Maggie in her room at the cottage, Burke offers Sam a drink. But Sam is so worried that he actually turns it down.

Maggie receives a transfusion of blood from a GLASS bottle.

I've always loved the scene of Sam (smoking!) and Joe in the hospital, waiting to see if Maggie will live or die. Joe is a kind and gentle virtual son to Maggie's pop. Beautifully and affectingly played by both actors.

All very true, guys. I was going on my very hazy memories of Bram Stoker when I posted.

Poor Willie gets yet another beating. But he never, ever admits that he was the one who made the phone call. I think his will power is in direct proportion to his compassion. Go Willie!

And he has a tough assignment--he has to keep Jason from "asking his stupid questions." When Willie says he doesn't know how, Barnabas replies loftily, I consider the problem entirely yours.

Probably hoping to make at least a small human contact, Willie expresses his concern to Sam by saying, I heard your daughter is ill! Sam yells at him not to mention her name--but he didn't, still ashamed, I think. Sam has no way of knowing what he owes Willie.

The dog hurling itself against the door--a cool and scary touch. But if Barn can take the shape of a bat, why can't he appear as a dog? Maybe that's him throwing himself against the door out of sheer bloodlust.

The girls are fretting about the power outage, but Barnabas makes light of it. He says, Electricity [pronouncing it carefully] is something I don’t have a problem with. Then he rhapsodizes about how beautiful the Old House looks by candlelight--as it was meant to be seen, he adds.

The girls listen raptly as Barnabas tells them his story--and so do I, every time I see it. This is one of the best scenes in the whole series, I think.

The end of the story doesn't seem too happy to me, at least not for Barnabas. He does note that Josette's face is serene in death--but he adds bitterly, "As if this was the best possible ending to her life."

Carolyn promptly goes to her room so she can be scared all by herself. Vicki lingers to wonder about the cows and Maggie. She observes, I don’t think we’ll find out what happened to Maggie by any logical process. Barnabas answers gravely, You’re a very clever girl, Miss Winters. Please take care that what happened to her doesn’t happen to you. It could happen to anyone.

It's almost comical to watch Jason blustering as if he's still the boss of Willie. I don't think Barnabas knows anything about the hold Jason has over Elizabeth, because I don't think Jason ever told Willie. He might not be so indifferent if he knew, because he does depend on Elizabeth's hospitality in letting him have the Old House. If Jason were in charge, he'd want Barnabas gone.

Barnabas returns to the Old House. The interior looks a little nicer each time we see it, but Barnabas is indifferent to Willie’s hard work as he screams for Willie and brandishes the cane.

Later: Jason tells Willie he knows W. and Maggie were at the cemetery. I went there a long time ago, Willie Willie mutters. His present existence must already feel like an eternity, even though it’s probably only been a couple of weeks.

I’m sure you’ve been back since then, Jason replies. I thought it was on account of the Collins jewels. Now I’m not so sure, but I intend to find out. I had nothing to do with the girl! Willie insists. It’s almost as if he now considers himself unworthy even to say her name. I for one suspect he's already starting to fall for her....

I think it was one of those innate qualities that could emerge only after Willie experienced so much pain that as Maggie put it, he didn't anyone else to be hurt. And he has repaid with compound interest all the insults he hurled at Maggie and her father at the BW.

The writers made Vicki even more naive than usual today. She blabs to Jason all about the mysterious phone call that helped them find Maggie near the mausoleum and even about the bite marks on Maggie's neck. FINALLY Vicki realizes she's said more than too much. And now Jason more information for his agile, wicked mind to work on.

Fabulous scene with Willie and Jason. Even Jason is horrified by the marks of the beating Willie has been rewarded with for saving Maggie. Jason foolishly thinks he has the upper hand and remarks patronizingly on how Barnabas has KINDLY ALLOWED Willie to work for him. Poor Willie does his best to warn Jason, but all he can do is hint that it's almost time to light the candles.

In the final scene, according to a trivia page the shadow of Barnabas is played by Alfred Dillay, who is noticeably shorter than Jonathan Frid.

My goodness, MT, you do express that (in the spoiler) so delicately!

And I'll bet that
Jason will insist on ALL the fringe benefits that go with being married.
