Wow, what a humdinger this episode is!

As Barnabas and Julia listen in on Sam and Dave's conversation in the outer room of the mausoleum, Dave says that whatever happened to Maggie is bound up in the supernatural. Barnabas's fury is all the more violent for being noiseless.

Julia argues, The best way to silence David is to find Sarah. This convinces Barnabas, but it also reminds him that Sarah seems to be appearing to everyone--except him. Why won’t she come to me? he mourns, so upset that for the moment he doesn’t care that Julia is watching and listening as he grieves. I’m her brother, he laments. She knows I love her. He starts to leave but turns back for a moment and runs his hand gently over Sarah’s graver marker.

Dave Woodard visits Collinwood and grills David, but he is a faithful friend and doesn't betray Sarah's trust. Then Dave more or less fires Julia by telling her that Maggie is no longer her patient.

At the Old House, Barnabas has just finished the sinister pronouncement, You will sleep, Cousin David. You will sleep for a long time. He is actually putting on his cape when Julia arrives, breathless with haste. I came because I heard the dogs howling, Julia says. I know what that means. I’m tired of your interference and your bungling! Barnabas snaps. I know what you’re about to do, Julia says, insisting yet again, David knows nothing! But Barnabas is determined: Nothing on this earth can stop me, he proclaims. She grabs his arms and is either about to struggle with him or get thrown to the ground when a sudden gust of wind rushes through the house. It blows the front doors open and rattles the chandelier. Julia drily observes, Nothing on this earth can stop you--except a little girl. Knowing it can only be Sarah, Barnabas pleads with her, Sarah! Please come to me! But Sarah’s only reply to her longing brother is to extinguish all the candles.

FAREWELL, DANIEL KEYES! According to my notes, this was his last appearance as the caretaker.

Eagle Hill is the happening place tonight! First Barnabas arrives, then is extremely annoyed when he finds that Julia has followed him. She forces him to tell her about the secret room, and now she knows how his father chained him in the coffin. Julia shivers with the cold, but of course it has no effect on Barnabas. She watches very carefully as he opens the secret panel.

Just as Julia is about to tell Barnabas that there's nothing in the secret room, he finds David's broken pocket knife. Julia tries to talk him out of killing David, but he warns her that she might end up her along with-- But he stops himself before mentioning Jason McGuire, whom he killed before Julia entered the story.

He's just decided to kill David when they hear Sam and Dave approaching. Hidden in the secret room, they listen as Sam and Dave finally put it all together: Sarah's grave marker, her clothes, her quaint manner, the brand-new 150-year-old doll. This is more than a coincidence! Dave exclaims. Maybe little Sarah really is a ghost!

By the way, no one ever explains the apparent light source in the secret room or why no one ever seems in danger of suffocating.

Poor David! Barnabas doesn't pass up this golden opportunity to question David closely without anyone else nearby. David grows increasingly terrified until rescue arrives in the form of Burke. David hurls himself into Burke's arms. And Burke notes the real terror in David's last look at Barnabas.

Vicki makes peace between Barnabas and Burke, each of whom tries his polite (in front of Vicki) best to find out why the other decided to look at Eagle Hill. Vicki says that what's important is that David is safe. So now Barnabas gets credit for finding him, thus increasing Vicki's admiration even though she is engaged to his Hated Rival.

Up in his room, David is eating a rather inadequate-looking sandwich while Roger tries to get the truth out of him. David tries to turn the conversation to Barnabas, and Roger gives up. With real kindness, he tells David to go to sleep, but his warmth doesn't include a good-night hug. In all fairness, Roger did hug David when he came back to Collinwood--maybe he thinks he’s filled his quota for now.

Wilie defends David to Barnabas, but Barnabas decides that David's curiosity must be put to rest--permanently. As he looks out the window, wishing David "pleasant dreams," he seems the embodiment of evil.

On consideration, Lydia, I think you're right about Julia.

I for one will miss your witty and welcome presence in the WP. Hope to see you back soon.

We have one of the many great fight scenes between Barn and Julia as she tries to keep him at the Old House for another injection. Julia accuses him (correctly) of jumping to conclusions in assuming that David know what he is. Barnabas agrees and says with utter calm, That’s why I want to find David and question him. I don’t want to harm David, Barnabas claims, but he’s been seeing far too much of Sarah, and children are always telling each other secrets. As he opens the front door, he comments, It would be a pity if David has to be done away with. I was getting rather fond of him. But if I have to choose between sentiment and survival, he adds with perfect sang-froid, I’ll choose survival. Even Julia is shocked at this declaration and points out that maybe David has already been found.

Barnabas has begun to accept the concept of women doctors. He remarks, For a professional person and a doctor, it’s surprising how many traits you share with Willie--squeamishness, for example. She retorts, I’d hardly call it squeamish, not wanting to see a child die at the hands of a v-- She stops herself just in time. A what? Barnabas asks her quietly. Julia warns him, If any harm comes to David, you’ll be writing your own death warrant. There may be one or two other death warrants, Barnabas answers, regardless of what happens--and you can pass that on to Willie when you see him.

At Collinwood, Vicki is wearing the unfortunate Mondrian-style orange tent dress. Unknowingly, she pushes Barn's buttons when she worries that the maniac who kidnapped Maggie might have David now. He decides to join the search. Take care in the dark, Vicki warns him. Barnabas reminds her, You forget that I’m more used to the dark than most men. No harm will come to me.

We have another great scene, this one with Barn and the dotty old caretaker, who remarks on Barn's resemblance to the famous portrait. It must have been published in a newspaper or magazine--surely the humble caretaker wouldn’t be a guest at Collinwood!

The caretaker says he heard the voice of a child coming from the wall of the Collins mausoleum. He adds, But there's only one child buried here--little Sarah Collins. Yes, yes, Barnabas answers impatiently, I know. When the caretaker asks how he knows about her, Barnabas snaps, Because I am her-- I am a Collins, he finishes, I know all about the family history. Barnabas says he wants to go to the mausoleum--maybe the voice will talk to him. You mustn’t go there alone at night! the caretaker protests. Barnabas answers, The night holds no dangers for me. The caretaker is inclined to disagree, saying, The night holds unseen dangers for every living soul. Barnabas indulges in a tiny, ironic smile.

Poor David is very cross by the time Sarah finally shows up and tells him how to get out. But he goes from the frying pan straight into the fire--that is, he runs right into Barnabas's arms!

I'll say again that I don't think poor Sarah has no idea what Barnabas is. All she knows is that he's not acting like the brother she used to know--and love. She may not have seen him kill Jason McGuire, for example, but somehow she gets a vibe or some other hint whenever Barn has done something terrible. Maybe that's why she tends to arrive only after the fact. Later on, if I remember, she'll get better at interpreting these vibes and shortens the time between vibe reception and acting on it.

Barnabas and Willie's assumption that Sarah knows that Barnabas is a vampire is the driving force behind their efforts to find her and shut her down.

The same probably holds true when she's looking for someone--Maggie or now David. She probably gets some kind of vibe about them and has to orient herself in time and space to find them.

Dr. Woodard knew Julia Hoffman BEFORE Maggie was even kidnapped. She--still "Hoffman…HE" at the time--was the one he called in to analyze the sample of Maggie's blood. I think Woodard, Maggie and Joe have the idea that Sarah is somehow connected to whoever kidnapped Maggie, but I doubt if anyone would think Sarah was the perp.

Dr. Woodard tells Julia that Sarah's doll looks brand new, even though no one has made a doll like it for over a hundred and fifty years.

AND Elizabeth is still in Boston, hooray!

This is the episode in which whether accidentally or on purpose, Roger delivers the classiic blooper line, "Some of my incestors--incestors?--ancestors--are buried here."

While Joe and Roger are inside the mausoleum, Roger expounds on Naomi ("one of the Collins beauties") and Joshua ("one of the old-timers"). He tells Joe that Joshua insisted on having his family buried here, but no one knows why.

That is a very nice outdoors picture behind Roger and Joe. The effect is somewhat spoiled when Joe comments, "This is the highest point of land for miles around." The outdoor picture shows a range of hills that is much higher! But maybe they are outside the Collins universe, the way we can see distant galaxies that are beyond the Milky Way.

Also, Roger tells Joe that Eagle Hill Cemetery is "down there." Surely Joe already knows where it is--and why is it called "Eagle Hill" if it's not actually on a hill?

Poor little David is really trapped. It would be very nice if Sarah showed up.

Quentin and Carolyn both survived the disaster at Collinwood, Quentin because he wasn't there, and Carolyn-- who knows?

We already know that Quentin is to all intents and purposes
immortal,
but no explanation is ever given for Carolyn's survival. Maybe her mother sent her away or died saving her and she was able to escape--that would be very characteristic of Elizabeth. In any case, Quentin and Carolyn have had about 25 years in which to go mad.  [hall2_shocked]

Lydia, I love your conversation with the cashier!   [hall2_grin] [hall2_grin] [hall2_grin]

The movie is up on our local pay-per-view channel ($4.95 or something similar), so I guess I'll watch it sooner or later. I have to say I have very mixed feelings about it.

If I remember, Roger's absences are usually explained as business trips on behalf of Collins Enterprises and usually take him all the way to-- Boston. (Don't get me wrong--I've been there twice and liked it both times!)

I don't think I could bear to see Liz--let alone David--die at the hands of the zombies.

I also like the scene you mention in your spoiler, Gothick. And I love, love, love Julia's flame-colored gown. It's a color I could never wear, but it's gorgeous.

I also thought that Barnabas's near bite of Vicki was very well done.

Carolyn and Vicki wonder if they should phone Roger and Elizabeth, who are away in Boston. Hooray for Elizabeth! And it's also great that she started her travels right away. Roger hasn’t been seen since the costume party.

At the Old House, Barnabas has to call Willie TWICE, so he's already in trouble even before he hurtles down the stairs at what seems like amazing speed. No doubt terror gives wings to Willie's feet! Even so, Willie is getting increasingly bolder about speaking up. I don't know if Barnabas would kill David outright, but he certainly would have no scruples about scaring him really thoroughly.

Vicki FINALLY connects all the dots and realizes that Sarah was the little girl at the costume party. I think the costume party was the only time Vicki ever sees her. Maybe Sarah felt drawn to her because Vicki was wearing Josette's gown--a gown that Sarah easily could have seen Josette wearing in life.

I really liked the way JF portrayed Barnabas's calm exterior as he plays a very private, very desperate game of beat the clock while Joe and Sam insist on searching the Old House and Joe even suggests breaking the door down. It's another good instance of Barn's Great Lie--he's probably just as frantic on the inside as Willie is on the outside. He is rescued by Carolyn's arrival--but doesn't escape the suspicious looks that Joe and the sheriff give him as they leave. Still better than being burned to a crisp by the rising sun, I guess.

Sarah's just a little girl--I don't think she came back because she has a mission. I still say that Barnabas's awakening was the stimulus that caused her to return. I'd even bet that at first she had no idea why she "awoke." I see her as confused and even frightened at the change in her brother, let alone the total absence of her parents. She sees Barnabas harming Maggie, and it's actually quite a while before she (S.) decides to visit Maggie in her lonely basement cell.

And because Sarah is just a kid, her behavior isn't always logical or consistent. She has a fairly short fuse and loses her temper pretty quickly sometimes, for instance, when she thinks Maggie has forgotten her. But she seems just as quick to forgive, because she gives the doll back to Maggie and protects her again when Barn comes to her (M's) room to kill her.

I don't think Sarah throws David under the bus, either. She probably just doesn't realize that he doesn't know how to get out of the secret room. I suspect she spends most of her time looking for her parents and finds and visits her friends when she gets lonely and discouraged. And as we'll see soon,
she gives David a toy soldier to protect him.
Anyway, just my rambling thoughts.
