I always thought Angelique's room was a reworking of parts of the cottage, with the sloping ceiling added. Certainly the fireplace is from the cottage and is much too big for a servant's room.

I don't have the DVDs or videos, so I don't know whose portrait is above the fireplace. Anybody else?

Until this point, the writers have emphasized Vicki's feeling that there is a strong connection between her and Josette. Several other people have noted how much Vicki resembles her, too. But once Vicki arrives in 1795, that connection and resemblance are never mentioned again. Instead the main story line is about how Barnabas became a vampire.

Angelique is downstairs in the drawing room, where she has no business being. Vicki finds her there and offers her friendship, seeing that they're both servants and far from home, but Angelique has other priorities and leaves. Vicki then makes herself comfortable to rescue Sarah's embroidery, even though she (V.) has already been told at least once that she shouldn't be in the drawing room either.

The lovely, sweet-natured Josette arrives, dressed for traveling but at the height of fashion in fine silk and lace. Love her hat! I always liked André much better than Sam Evans.

We get the famous conversation in extremely fractured French! Josette's fondness for Angelique is certainly genuine. Vicki is horrified, because she knows this lovely young woman's terrible fate, but Josette flies into Barnabas's eager arms. Angelique watches, ablaze with anger and hate.
But no tears will ever fall from her glaring eyes.
Instead of obeying Josette and unpacking her no doubt many fine gowns, Angelique hurries up to her own humble room. Its sloping ceiling indicates that it is right up under the eaves of the roof. As she casts her first spell at Collinwood, Angelique’s true nature is fully revealed. She is a witch with unknown but obviously great supernatural power. However, she is either inexperienced or has not yet learned to harness her abilities--or to consider the consequences of her actions….

Loved your long post--you said almost everything I would have said!

Joshua makes it clear to Vicki that she can't go anywhere without Sarah. In those days, some servants would have been expected to stay indoors 24/7, except of course for church on Sunday.

I love GH as the countess. She is obviously enjoying herself immensely. Her scenes with LE are terrific. The countess wonders if she can have a cup of hot tea. Joshua hints that he won’t allow tea to be served at Collinwood--our first indication of his political views. Later he refers to the townspeople, who fought for equality less than twenty years ago. Does this mean he has one teeny redeeming characteristic?

JB looks absolutely radiantly beautiful, even in black and white. BTW, the beautiful arch that we first saw in Tony Peterson's office now adorns the master bedroom.

And yes, welcome (so to speak) to Angelique! Clearly she is expecting more of a welcome from Joshua. She gives the drawing room such an appreciative and anticipatory look that we already know she expects Barnabas to treat her as more than a servant.

After dinner, Barnabas finds the countess reading her tarot cards. He pooh-poohs them as superstition, but she insists they're really sophisticated and offers to show them to him. Barnabas looks at the cards as the countess explains them. Your card is the Magician, she tells him, because you have won Josette (whom the countess obviously loves dearly). Barnabas thanks her for the neat compliment. In answer to his questions, the countess tells him, The symbol on the Magician’s card is the sign for infinity--eternal life. Don't you want to live forever? Of course, he replies lightly. But the countess sees another card and says, No, you wouldn’t!

And then of course, there's famous scene in Barnabas's room. He looks especially nice in his poet's-sleeve shirt. JF and LP play this scene to perfection!

WELCOME, ABIGAIL COLLINS!  [snow_smiley]

JB's clothes and jewels are drop-dead gorgeous but can't disguise Naomi's deep unhappiness. I've always loved Naomi--she is one of my top favorite characters. Surely she is responsible for Barnabas's courtly grace and gentleness and for Sarah's sweetness. And now, of course, we know exactly why Barnabas is so partial to Elizabeth in our time.

Jeremiah's blue velvet coat is also a knockout. He is very nice to Vicki. And as the story unfolds, keep in mind his comment that witches don't cry over the men they love.

Vicki actually shows some enterprise in this episode. She climbs out an upstairs window (maybe she can walk across a dormer or something into the next room) to escape and then actually tells Joshua a teeny tiny fib when she says she was educated in a foundling home--in Boston.

And yes, this episode does clip along. Even more excitement to come!  [snow_smiley]

Me too! And I totally agree with your spoiler.

I also like how the Old House--that is, the original Collinwood--is full of daylight and brightness, with quite different furniture in a lighter, more elegant style than Barnabas has had Willie install. I'm sure Naomi is responsible.

Glad to hear you changed your mind, dom!

I love love love the clothes in 1795! Some of JB's outfits are just gorgeous.

I also love seeing Barnabas as he was. He has all the world before him. He is the heir to a prosperous business and a great fortune. He is looking forward to a life time and no doubt a family of his own with the woman he loves. He has a youthful, light-hearted, gregarious spirit. His open, handsome face is unmarred by grief or anger or horror--or shame. He takes Vicki upstairs to the little room that will be hers, then says that his mother will be coming home soon. She'll know what to do, he tells Vicki, then, typically male, he retreats.

Somehow the multicolor granny-square afghan has also traveled back through time and is folded at the foot of Vicki’s bed.

My least favorite part of the 1795 story--which otherwise is amazing--is Vicki. Oh well.

I love seeing Barn and Sarah together--very sweet!

But then he wouldn't have been the Nicholas we know and, um, love! And it's only fitting that his main fault should be the first deadly sin.  [santa_smiley]

Don't worry, I think everyone takes that combo for granted, the same way we all know that chocolate is the base of the food pyramid.

She does indeed, and if she could just hear herself, Carolyn would be horrified at her willingness to drag her mother's name through the mud just to make Barn happy.

Maybe, MT--but then we would have missed the hideous yellow of Elizabeth's caftan.

The (I think) final shot of Vicki standing near the amazingly new-looking Old House is pretty spiffy. The colors look very bright and fresh, at least in the Robservations thread.

dom, that's funny about right-to-left and left-to-right! I suppose it's the same camera angle too.  [santa_grin]

One last, telling detail: The suddenly commanding Roger questions Phyllis. She replies, My name is Phyllis Wick. I was engaged by the solicitor in Boston, and I am ready to report to Mrs. Naomi Collins. I’m to be the nursemaid to a nine-year-old girl named Sarah. The others are astounded to hear her mention “Mrs. Collins.” No such person exists in 1968. Barnabas stands behind her, speechless and immobilized with shock. He is the only person present who has any idea of what has actually happened--and he can't tell anyone.

The séance! THE séance!!!

I had forgotten that it happened immediately after Barnabas saw Sarah.

Magic time! Vicki becomes Sarah's medium (nice job by AM, too). Barnabas’s alarm increases as Sarah slips back to 1795. I wonder when my new nursemaid will arrive, she says. I hope she'll look like the picture I drew. She asks, Barnabas, will you still love me after you marry Josette? [Everyone--especially Barnabas--starts at this seeming contradiction to the family history. ] Why are you appearing to David? someone asks. She replies, I came to tell him the story of how it all began. But poor Sarah is afraid of the dark, it seems.

The big switcheroo finally happens as the present-day Collinses are confronted by the very confused Phyllis Wick--and the even more confused Vicki finds herself standing not far from the Old House, which she can see through the trees. It looks strangely different to her, and she suddenly realizes that it is-- new. Frightened and bewildered, she calls out, Where am I?

The beautiful arch also shows up again fairly soon
in Joshua and Naomi's bedroom at the Old House in 1795.
