That's hilarious, MT! What I really meant was that Barn was such a (may I say it) sterling character before he became a vampire. I'll be laughing all afternoon!

It seems that Angelique is well and truly stuck with the ghost of Jeremiah. Once again, she has failed to reckon with the consequences of her impulsive, unthinking actions.

Another wonderful scene with Barnabas and Ben. Barn asks Ben to bring Vicki to the Old House for safety. Ben asks, How will Angelique will feel about havin’ Miss Winters in the house? Barnabas assures him, She will be just as protective as I am. Ben is genuinely touched when Barnabas designates him the best man. But poor Ben can't tell Barnabas what he knows.

Angelique is up in her room (maybe Barnabas’s, certainly not Josette’s), admiring her satin wedding gown, which she must have made herself in Martinique and confidently brought with her to Collinwood. Radiantly she pirouettes in front of the mirror, but abruptly stops, horrified: Her reflection is haggard, her hair unkempt, and her gown spattered with blood. But when she looks down at herself, everything is normal.

In answer to someone's query in a previous ep., we learn that Vicki has been afraid to eat, much less breathe, while she was hiding in the stable. Driven by hunger and exhaustion, she spill the beans to Barnabas. He asks Ben if Vicki might be the witch. NO! Ben says emphatically but can't explain.

Angelique is frantically packing when Barnabas comes to see why she's late for her own wedding. It's probably no more than the truth when she insists that Jeremiah must have put the voodoo doll of Sarah and the pins in her suitcase. Angelique promises to come downstairs after fixing her veil (which is attached with hideous plastic flowers). Barnabas doesn't even admire her gown or anything, though I suppose that's meant to be an indication of his state of mind--leaving aside that it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony.

Jeremiah still isn't done with Angelique. We see him carrying her, in classic monster style, to the cemetery. There he deposits her in his own open grave despite her screams, protests, and orders. You will now learn what it is like to live without peace in the land of the dead, he intones. He begins pouring earth onto her (well, actually it thumps onto the camera), ignoring her screams.

Great observations as always, MT! That's a nice image of where Trask sleeps, although Abigail no doubt has made sure he gets his creature comforts.

I guess Joshua's idea of parenting is to expect absolute, total, unquestioning obedience from his children. Any punishments he hands are for their own good, and eventually (he thinks) they will see how right and just he was. Really, it's probably not his fault. Most likely that's how he was brought up himself.

And yes, it's funny that Angelique's girly moment involves a stolen wedding dress. Nothing about her is straightforward. Even her love (insofar as she can love) for Barnabas is permeated with ruthless selfishness.

Ten thousand 1795 dollars in gold would be worth almost $182,000 in today's money. It still doesn't seem like enough value to put on pre-vamp Barnabas.

Thanks for your kind words, dom!  [snow_blush]

I'm sure Joshua arranged for Naomi to own the Old House as some kind of tax dodge. It is unusual, considering that our story happens during those dark days before states started enacting laws that allowed married women to own property. In 1795, any property that Naomi owned as a single woman--including every stitch of her clothing AND her own person--would have become Joshua's property to do with what he would.

I would assume that Trask has also moved to the New House along with everyone else.

MT, please feel better ASAP!

We start out with another fine LE-JF row. Barnabas realizes that his father doesn't believe anyone could love him (B.) for himself. But that isn't the world that Joshua inhabits. No doubt his own marriage to Naomi was an arranged one.

Josette's room at the New House will eventually become Vicki's. Elizabeth tells Vicki that it was her own room--before she was married (and we know how that turned out). There does seem to be something unfortunate about it.

The scene with Angelique, Barnabas and Josette is just heart-rending. KLS looks absolutely radiant in her sorrow and is the epitome of grace. The continuation after Angelique has left is even sadder. Kudos to KLS and JF. I remember shedding a tear or two myself the first time I saw Josette's eyes fill with tears even before Barnabas leaves the room. Then she sits down on the bed--the bed she would have shared with Barnabas--and weeps, heartbroken.

Naomi's good deed is so typical of her! She has always been practically my favorite character. And of course I love it that she stands up to Joshua.

Barnabas leaves Angelique alone at the Old House while he fetches the minister. Alone in the drawing room, Angelique is at last free to exult in being the mistress of a fine house, with everything she could ever want--till Jeremiah suddenly materializes in a corner of the drawing room. He refuses to obey her command to depart, and advances menacingly, Ping Pong ball and all….

Yes! I also noticed that Jeremiah's intended room becomes David's in 1968. Maybe that's why so many weird things happen when David is there!

This ep. contains one of my favorite exchanges in the show: Angelique hypothesizes that the trashing of Jeremiah's room was caused by his ghost, André agrees grimly that his sister won't want to stay there now. Abigail surveys the wreckage and says angrily, Joshua should have listened to me! He should have had the Reverend Trask perform an exorcism on the New House before we moved in. This is the work of the devil! she declares, adding, The Collinses were never subject to supernatural disturbances--till the du Pres family came. Thoroughly insulted, André declares, From you, madam, I expect nothing but the narrow opinions of a lonely, fanatical old woman. Abigail’s shock tells us that no one has ever addressed her this way before. Before he stomps out, André adds, It is at once a pity and a blessing that you were not born in France. Good day, madam!

I can't watch the episodes at this point, MT, but I will take your word for it on the matter of JC's equipment. It does seem like truly weird. But I remember liking the scene where Nathan talks to Barnabas about the wisdom of his marriage to Angelique. For once he combines diplomatic tact with very clear meaning when he asks, Must you marry because the lady’s honor is concerned? Amused in spite of himself, Barnabas assures him it isn't, but gets angry when Nathan says he was hoping Barn would marry Josette after a suitable interval of mourning. In the end Barn apologies, and Nathan wishes him happiness, though he looks as if he doubts it will happen. Poor Barn sinks down into a chair, looking exhausted and discouraged.

Does Barnabas's very nice room at the New House eventually end up being Carolyn's? They look very similar.

Angelique is delighted (of course) that with a little help from Jeremiah, she has talked Barnabas into marrying her tonight. Thank you for being so good to me! she exclaims, looking radiant as she lays her head on his shoulder. But she is so self-absorbed that she doesn't notice how reluctant Barnabas is to embrace her….

Forgot yet another great LE-JB moment: In the foyer of the New House, where Joshua is berating her for organizing the move so poorly. You gave me only eighteen hours’ notice, she reminds him. The staunchly republican Joshua asks, What will André think? Where are you going to put that-- that-- I never know what to call her! (If this was a blown line, Louis Edmonds makes a remarkable recovery!) I was going to give her Je-- Naomi stops herself just in time and says instead, The countess will have the room at the top of the stairs. Just then the countess herself bustles in with Angelique in tow. She enthuses to Naomi, I must compliment you on the wonderful organization of the move--and you, Monsieur Collins, on your luck in having such a wife. Joshua has the grace to bow his thanks--and really, he doesn't have a choice, does he.  [snow_cheesy]

That first scene is pretty funny, MT!

In the last scene, we can see that JB is actually holding a script but still does her best to act as if she is off book.

Joshua asks irritably, Where are you going to put that-- that-- I never know what to call her! (If this was a blown line, Louis Edmonds makes a remarkable recovery!)

Angelique enjoys her moment of triumph over Josette. I'm sure poor Josette was hoping that somehow, somehow, she and Barnabas could get back together. But not now. We never again see that "lucky" flower that Angelique pinned on her wedding dress.

MT, I guess you're right. The whole final scene was poorly done and could have been better, but it does show us that Angelique will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Raising the dead is far more daring than sticking pins in a doll.

And yes, the purple and black rosettes (I think they were called) are for mourning.

Welcome, misspelled tombstone of Jerimiah Collins! We learn that he was born in 1763.

It falls to poor Naomi to tell Joshua that Barnabas is getting married--to Angelique. He calls it a devil's bargin, little suspecting how right he is. We get a wonderful scene between father and son (LE and JF always did these so well), where poor Barnabas is forced to defend his upcoming marriage.

Joshua is convinced that Collinwood is cursed and orders Naomi to start the move to the New House. Very astutely she wonders if they'll leave their troubles behind when they move.

Josette visits Jeremiah's grave. Somehow her widow's weeds only enhance her delicate beauty. Barnabas arrives, and a tender, bittersweet scene follows. Combining his father's volatility and his mother's sweetness, Barnabas blames himself for what happened. He starts to tell Josette about his marriage, but Josette cuts him off, thinking (if only!) she knows what he is about to say. Just when he's about to insist, Angelique arrives. My lady's carriage is waiting, she says in her role as lady’s maid. There is room for M’sieur Barnabas, too. Barnabas turns her down. When Josette goes on ahead, Angelique says, M’sieur Barnabas can come along with us. I thought I might be interrupting something. Barnabas answers No, nothing at all. Angelique fixes him with a look and warns, I hope not. She goes, leaving Barnabas standing at Jeremiah's grave--no doubt pondering this preview of his married life, so different from his joyous prospects only days--and a lifetime--ago.

Next, Joshua and Naomi speak with Angelique. Joshua wants Angelique to remain standing as a servant should, but Naomi insists that he allow her to sit. Joshua is furious when Angelique refuses to be bought out. She stands her ground even when Joshua threatens to disinherit Barnabas. Naomi is sympathetic and warns Joshua that if he earns the couple’s enmity now he will be sorry later. Joshua wants them to wait till after the mourning period for Jeremiah. You only want to buy time, Angelique replies. We understand each other perfectly, Joshua comments with grim pleasure. But Naomi tells her, Please wait! If you do, I promise to be your friend for your entire married life. Angelique is nearly overcome by Naomi’s kindness. She must give in, but secretly vows that Joshua will do nothing to prevent the marriage even though it must be postponed. She leaves to pack Josette's clothes for the move to the New House.

An otherwise wonderful episode full of dramatic scenes comes to a bleh conclusion as Angelique resurrects Jeremiah to torment Josette. Oh well.

I don't think Angelique EVER would have let Barnabas get out of his agreement. She was so sure that he would marry her in the end that she played her ace and offered to free him--a masterstroke of reverse psychology. If that hadn't worked, I'm sure she would have thought of something else to try. Also, she is so utterly incapable of seeing things from anyone else's point of view that she just can't imagine that he wouldn't marry her.

I also think that Angelique wants Barnabas to be the one to tell Josette about the marriage because it would be yet another twist of the knife with which she has stabbed Josette's heart.

I also think it's hilarious that Jeremiah's head is so completely wrapped up.

For all that she insists that she loves Jeremiah, Josette never wears a wedding ring.

Angelique shows fiendish mastery in her manipulation of Barnabas into agreeing to marry her. Knowing that he is a man of honor, she calls his bluff and releases him from his promise. Of course he has no way out. Looking utterly miserable, Barnabas tells her, If you will take me as I am, and knowing that I love Josette, I will marry you. Too absorbed in her own happiness to notice that Barnabas doesn’t share it, she flings her arms around him. Anticipating his father’s probable reaction, he adds, You must also let me tell the family myself. Overjoyed, Angelique promises to be a dutiful wife and to let him break the news to his family himself in his own way. She says, My obedience to your wishes will be an indication of our married life. Our married life, Barnabas echoes moodily, but Angelique doesn't notice.

Naomi's tender concern for her son's happiness is wonderful to see. Nice mother-son scene.
