A jury? I don't remember that. I thought it was just the three judges, but I haven't seen this ep. in years and have only my notes.

Judge Hanley refuses to reopen the trial and says Vicki must hang. He is not the last Hanley to appear in the show!

Peter and Joshua now must bring the bad news to Vicki, who is devastated. Joshua apologizes and leaves after saying a regretful goodbye to Vicki. We can only imagine his outrage that he can’t have Vicki freed merely by his word as a COLLINS!

The lovers escape, but Vicki has been shot….

After Nathan slaps Millicent and holds her, I wonder if at last he feels some pity for her. Just wondering….

But poor Bathia--destroyed in the end by Angelique. Barnabas and his father are defeated.

Joshua finds Millicent alone in the tower room. She has lost whatever shreds of sanity remained to her. She takes him to task for coming to "her" room. Finally he spots the bite marks on her neck and guesses what has happened. Full of pity and sorrow, he draws her close. Barnabas, he sobs, then, Millicent, my poor Millicent. I'll make it all up to you. Barnabas couldn't help himself. She tells him, You must tell the man claiming to be Barnabas to stop using your house. There was a man here, a man who looked like Barnabas--but he was very different. I’m doing what I can about it, Joshua tells her. Millicent giggles again. I don’t remember what you do, she says. Joshua gazes at her with sorrow.

On the docks, a nameless (and silent) streetwalker is putting the moves on Barnabas. He is not exactly reluctant despite his earlier resolve, but she will survive the night, because Barnabas hears Bathia's call in his mind. Follow the light, she tells him. He sees the candle flame hovering in the air before him and begins to follow it.

When Barnabas arrives at the tower room, Bathia is waiting for him with a cross. She holds it up in front of him, and he cringes away with a cry of pain. She places it on the coffin to deny him a place of safety. As he tries desperately to get away from her, she circles him, forming a protective magical field. But Angelique has already possessed Barnabas's body and speaks through him, refusing to be dislodged. Bathia places her hand on Barnabas's heart. He falls to the floor, still. Then, without warning, he springs up and seizes her by the throat.

I think this is the first time we see Angelique's portrait. I have no idea when she had it done--or why she would be portrayed in her plain servant's gown and cap instead of in a gown that would display her very brief status as mistress of the Old House. Or maybe it was never painted by human hand but instead produced in hell.  [easter_shocked]

At the Old House, Natalie misses the portrait of Josette, which Barnabas hung over the mantel. (Some undistinguished male Collins has been hanging there ever since Barnabas got Josette’s room ready when he planned to call her back from beyond the grave. But her portrait will be above the mantel again when David Collins plays in the Old House.) And speaking of portraits, as the two prepare to leave, Natalie looks back at the portrait over the mantel. Seeing Angelique's portrait staring down at them, they realize she must know what they're planning--and that they must hurry.

Joshua tells Natalie that Barnabas isn't dead--but he never tells her his son's true state, only that he's under a curse.

When Millicent discovers Barnabas in the Tower Room, he tries to be fair by asking her not to tell anyone that she's seen him. We can see the regret in his eyes when he realizes the only way to silence her is to bite her.

I also like Anita Bolster. She is one of the very few actually elderly actors on the show. Her imdb entry says she was born in 1895, so she was in her mid-seventies when she was on the show. She died at 85, but not before appearing in Scarlet Street with Edward G. Robinson and our very own Joan Bennett.

Do you mean in the mausoleum? I think they're supposed to be big stone sarcophagi. Joshua would want to be as ostentatious as possible.

Millicent's wedding gown, in oyster-colored satin, and veil are really lovely.

The gown that Naomi wears for the wedding is the same one that Elizabeth will wear to Barnabas's costume party a long time from now. Now that the episodes are in color, we can see that it is a beautiful pale pink satin gown with cream underskirt and lace-trimmed sleeves.

While Millicent and Nathan and the family drink Champagne after the wedding, upstairs, sunlight streams into the Tower Room. The coffin rests on a plinth, its occupant deep in his undead slumber.

Nathan has spent most of his wedding day getting drunk when Naomi finds him in the drawing room. Aren't you interested in the Tower Room? he asks tauntingly. She threatens him with dire consequences if he does anything to harm Millicent. But instead of deterring him, she has made a bad enemy.

After Nathan storms out of the house on hearing what Millicent has done with her money, Daniel finds her in her room crying, but she sends him away without explaining why. He meets Nathan in the drawing room and asks, Did you make my sister cry? Nathan denies it. Daniel then confides, I’m worried about Millicent. Please don’t be angry about the money--she's managing it for me till I come of age. Utterly unaware of Nathan's relief at this news, Daniel continues worriedly, If something happens to Millicent, if she weren't in her right mind, I'll be all alone. He wonders idly who would take care of the money in that case: Joshua, or maybe even Nathan. Nathan assures him that he has no interest in the money but immediately puts Plan B into effect.

Millicent asks Nathan where he's been all day. I went into town to get your wedding gift, he claims, and I couldn't find it in my quarters. (We never learn what it was, but we can assume it is imaginary in any case.)

And so the gaslighting of poor Millicent begins….

Back in ep. 431, just after Barn's disastrous attempt to resurrect Josette.

Welcome Tower Room! (I think?)

Another pretty good line from this ep.: "What I've been trying to tell you all along is that I am already dead!"

Barn tells Joshua that Angelique threatened to destroy his entire family if he told anyone that she was the witch. Well, really, that happened anyway, didn't it?

I think Joshua wants to confine Barnabas because he thinks that that way he can somehow keep him from killing anyone else. He is horrified at the extent of Barnabas's ruthlessness. Plus as MT notes, Joshua is in the habit of thinking he can control everything around him. And now that all his hopes for the future have been destroyed, he's even more desperate to control his reluctantly homicidal son.

The ice-blue satin gown that Millicent is wearing is the same one that Carolyn will wear to Barnabas's costume party a long time from now.

Very nice scene with Daniel and Millicent. All the poor little guy wants is to go home to New York and get away from this gloomy house. Though Millicent is more than a few sandwiches short of a picnic, she and her brother are very close, and she does her best to comfort him.

Later, Millicent tells the stunned Naomi that she has signed over her entire fortune to Daniel. Naomi can't dissuade her because Millicent says Nathan will be able to support her, and anyway, her fortune doesn't matter to him. All a-twitter at the thought of her bridegroom’s nobility, Millicent goes upstairs to prepare for her wedding day.

According to what Joshua tells Naomi about having to find Ben, poor Ben singlehandedly moves Barnabas's coffin to the Tower Room. Why Barnabas didn't just bat his way there is a mystery to me--maybe he wanted to spare his father yet another shock. Joshua arrives and locks Barnabas in--a useless gesture as he well knows.

Much later, Naomi is wearing a beautiful black robe as she gazes out the drawing room windows at the Tower Room.

I stand corrected, guys--thanks! It's always shock to hear the word because they use it so sparingly--a nice touch.

You've said pretty much everything I would have said. This is one of the best and one of my favorite episodes in the entire series--gut wrenching, heartbreaking, superbly written, beautifully realized and featuring nearly flawless performances from everyone involved. I remember that my hair was standing on end the first time I saw it.

It's hard to know who is in the most dreadful circumstances: Naomi, desperately trying to reach her husband, who is desperately trying to keep her in the dark; Joshua, torn between pity and horror for his son; Barnabas, who knows what he must reveal and dreads it.

Joshua's proud demeanor before Nathan, even in defeat, is heartbreaking.

Despite their previous disagreements, father and son tacitly agree that at all costs to themselves, they must keep the secret from Naomi. In some ways, the tragedy of the curse brings them closer.

Yes, I'm 99 percent sure this is the first mention of the word vampire.

dom, you note that Joshua wouldn't tell Barnabas who revealed that B. was at the Old House. Maybe Joshua thought Barnabas would take some kind of revenge, although he doesn't yet know the extent of Barnabas's savagery. Unfortunately he's only given Nathan another weapon to use against him.

JB is dazzlingly beautiful in this episode and will be still more beautiful in one to come….

I'd call it baby blue, dom. And yes, NB looks stunning in it. And JB looks equally beautiful in that pale green-themed gown! Joshua's new (?) jacket is very smart too, and Nathan is hatefully smug.

All parties concerned know full well that even though Joshua is the head of the family, Millicent is of age and can marry whomever she chooses without Joshua's consent, so in this case the consent is a mere formality. And of course there were no married women's property acts in any U.S. states for another 30 years at least. So if anything happened to Millicent, Nathan would get it all.

In the study, Joshua takes a pistol from a box and tucks it inside his coat just before Naomi comes in to find out what he and Nathan talked about. Later, he tells her, and quickly leaves the room and the house. Thinking that her husband has rejected her yet again, Naomi sadly turns to a decanter and slowly pours herself a glass.

Ben does his best to warn Joshua not to linger at the Old House, now that the sun is setting. Joshua threatens him with life in prison for his seeming insubordination. Eventually Ben reluctantly departs, for once apparently equally concerned for Joshua and his son.

Joshua descends the very stairs that his sister and Trask did before him, and is equally surprised to find a coffin in the cellar. With great dread he approaches it. The lid slowly begins to open. As a hand wearing a black onyx ring emerges to push the lid up, Joshua is transfixed with horror. Barnabas, he chokes out….

My hair stands on end just thinking about this!  [easter_smiley]

That is funny, especially since oysters were considered an aphrodisiac.  [easter_cheesy]
